View Full Version : 1 Really Worth Getting

Hey all! I'm new to this forum, so I apologize in advance if I'm going over something that has been brought up already.
In viewing some of the other postings on this and other Beatle boards, I've noticed that a lot of Beatle fans seem reluctant to pick up the new album because it is simply a repackaging of songs that you already own. Let me tell you this is a major mistake. I had thought the same thing until yesterday when I heard my friend's copy of the CD. I too am now an owner of "1" after listening to the difference that the remastering made. While it is true that they may have sounded better if some of the songs had been remixed like on Songtrack, the songs have never sounded better than they do on this album due to the remastering. I've found myself listening to the songs in a whole new way now, picking out subtle intonations of the instruments that I had never heard before. Its strange after years of having every note memorized to be hearing new things in some of the songs, but it is also a fantastic feeling. If you're only going to listen to the songs a couple of times or have really poor stereo equipment, then I'd say yeah stick with your old CDs. However if you're a serious audiophile (at least when it comes to the Beatles) you really need to own 1.

I assume quite a number of people would like the CD, yet with the same songs as they probably already have are reluctant to place any unnecessary strain on their cash flow. So, if you're able to utilise one of your family members in a time of such crisis - do it! (Worked for me http://www.beatlelinks.net/ubb/smilies/images/icons/wink.gif)
Interesting about what you said with picking up new sounds in some of the songs Stu... I haven't had a chance to listen to it properly yet so I'll have to get around to doing so.
P.S. And welcome to Beatlelinks, hope you enjoy it!

Did you notice any difference in any of the songs (with their sounds) I wondered?

For those of you who don't really care about getting the Beatles 1 CD, I've got something that's really worth getting! It's the Beatles 1 double album. This thing is so cool! It has posters of all of the Beatles inside, as well as this huge poster of all of the 45's from every country. It's not anything that you can actually go out and buy, though. This friend I have has a record shop, and he specially ordered it for me.....it's an import from somewhere. If anyone is interested in getting one, I'll find out where you can order it!
Wow, that sounds neat - please let us all know as soon as you find out more!

Okay.....I've found out a little more about this double album thingy. You CAN buy it, but only in specialty record stores and places like that. Even if your specialty store doesn't have any available, you can probably aske them to order one for you. It's made in England by a company called Dutch East. They're selling them for around $50. I know it's not really cheap, but I think it's a collectible.

Wow, that is cool, Jami.
I have the CD Beatles 1 and i listen to it all the time! it is my favorie because it has a "variety" of songs, rather than from all one era of the beatles.

I agree. Plus, there are some differences between some songs: for example, the remixes used in the "Yellow Submarine Songtrack" were not used here, and "All You Need Is Love", "Eleanor Rigby" and "Yellow Submarine" stayed with their original mixes, and a lot of annoying noises were corrected in some tracks, like "I Want To Hold Your Hand", "Day Tripper", and most notably, "I Feel Fine", which I think, it's the one that gets the best improvement. Never heard about the double album here in Chile. We're so far away! http://www.beatlelinks.net/ubb/smilies/images/icons/frown.gif

I was in a store for something else and finally got it today. Listened to it twice already. Yes, it is a good collection of different eras on one disc, and it's interesting hearing the same songs and instruments sound a little different.

The stereo seperation is more defined in most of the new cuts.

If you really want to find out if it sounds better, use the Red and Blue Albums as a base for comparison, just a hint.

Good point. I've gone back and compared the CD's and "1" really does sound much better than either of those albums. It's as if something was lifted off of the tracks that was muffling the sound. They sound much clearer now. I've noticed things like Ringo's kick drum sounds much more distinct on Paperback Writer and there is the creaking from the guitar (I think its from the guitar) after the first chord of A Hard Day's Night. You can definitely hear it if you listen for it on "1962-66", but it really jumps out on "1". Also alot of Gerge's lead parts on "I Want To Hold Your Hand" seem much clearer and easier to pick out now. I could go, but you get the picture. They're still the same songs, but they just sound brighter and better than ever before.

I agree with all the things you said. But did you have to say it twice? http://www.beatlelinks.net/ubb/smilies/images/icons/wink.gif
Anyway, "Ticket To Ride" and "I Feel Fine" also sound great, comparing them to the "1962-1966" CDs. They lose some background noise and leave a clear sound of the leading guitar part (and the vocals).
Has anybody noted something strange with "Can't Buy Me Love" on this CD? Is the only one that doesn't sound too well, and I have made the test in all the stereos I have here in my house. It kind of goes louder and softer (a little bit softer now, a little bit louder now http://www.beatlelinks.net/ubb/smilies/images/icons/wink.gif.)
That's my only complaint about "1".

I've noticed that in Can't Buy Me Love the electric rhythm guitar comes in and out. I never noticed that on the original, which is not as clean.

The vinyl edition was printed in extremely limited numbers and all have sold out. They were pressed in the UK and can only now be bought 2nd hand. Some people may say that theirs is still in the shrink wrap, but this is impossible since none were distributed in this way. It's only 3rd parties that did this. I got a copy.

Oh, wow! I didn't know that the vinyl version of "1" was made in limited numbers! I bought it myself when I visited England last year, thinking it would be a cool thing to have. Do I get points for having a copy that wasn't pressed correctly? Record #2 has an extra piece of paper in the middle part. And Harbrige is right about the shrink-wrap, my copy was not shrink-wrapped when I bought it.

You mean the spindle hole wasn't cut through the labels properly?

No, the spindle hole is cut just fine. What I was trying to say is that in addition to the usual piece of paper glued in the center, there is another piece of paper on top of that! It's not glued very securely, though, as I could peel it off very easily if I wanted to. On closer inspection, it appears that the first piece of paper was not quite centered, so the second piece was put on. The only problem with that was that it is obvious that it is a botched job. By the way, the side in question is Side 4.
