I absolutely love folk music. Tonight on PBS was a compilation of wonderful folk coverage and protest songs from the early 20th century to protest songs about current events.

One thing that really caught my attention was "Get Your Rights, Jack" to the tune of the 1961 smash made famous by Ray Charles, "Hit the Road, Jack." Does anybody know the words to "Get Your Rights, Jack?" Great piece, that one.

I watched the 'Protest Songs' program on PBS last night. They had a segment about John (Give Peace a Chance ) and George (Concert For Bangladesh). I watched the program until they ruined it by doing a segment on (C)rap 'music'.

I don't think that "ruined" the program at all. A lot of rap is DEFINITELY protest music and I thought it fit in well with the theme.

Some interesting stuff about Wood Guthrie on Dylan's No Direction Home DVD. This Machine Kills Facists was written on Woody's guitar. That blew my mind!

I agree. Just because it's not your cup of tea doesn't automatically make it crap. There's some great messages that are well deserving of recognition in rap. It's not my favorite music, but I can respect certain aspects of it, just like rock.

Like A Rolling Stone is like a rap song to me the way Dylan sings it.

I loved it and the history of protest songs. In 1968, Robert Kennedy sang "If I Had a Hammer," (sung by Trini Lopez in 1963 and also by Pete Seeger, Peter, Paul & Mary, the Weavers & Various folk artists) for the campaign. Music has the power to transport you; evoke memories and paint vivid images of the times.

I liked the speaker and thought he did an excellent job. Although I never liked rap, it is still protest music and it did fit in with what the show was about.

I never liked 1985's "We Are The World" and I never liked the way it made me feel. While I like the rationale for the song, I don't like the actual song itself. On the other hand, I LOVE 1985's "Sun City." I just LOVE that! Talk about an excellent protest song!

Most types of music can have elements of protest in them, so that can make any sort of music protest music, I suppose.
