Harb, I have a Yesterday and Today Album from the 60's with trunks on the cover. Is there a way that I can tell if it's a pasteover without trying to rip the cover off?

Of course there is. Just follow this quick and simple step-by-step instructional guide...
<LI>Covers with the "Gold Record Award" seal are not Butchers.
<LI>On the back, lower-right-hand corner is a number. This will usually be a number, 2,3,4,5 or 6 denoting the Capitol Pressing Plant where that album was pressed.
<LI>Lp's must have a "slick" type cover. At that time, the Lp jackets were made in three pieces...
1.Cardboard Jacket
2.Back Slick which raps around to the front of the cover
3.The front slick.
<LI>Sometimes the "Trunk" slick was pasted on sloppily and ended up offset. Then you can see part of the original cover underneath fairly easy.
<LI>If you look close, you can see
the bleed-through of Ringos V-neck shirt.

<LI>Most importantly. You ***MUST*** be able to see the bleed-through of Ringo's black V-Neck shirt or it is NOT a butcher. It is possible that the cover could be so dirty or worn that you may not be able to make that determination.
If you want a clearer image of the V neck then you can see a scan of my 2nd state at http://www.angelfire.com/realm/paraportal/butcher2nd.html . The first pic is the record, the second is the cover enhanced to show Ringo better, and the third is unrelated and I don't own it. (sadly).

About the numbers on the back, I've heard there are butchers with the numbers 12 and 13 on the back, but if there's any number down there you're in with a chance.

Okay, Harb, you got me...I have an original "Y&T" WITHOUT the "gold record award" seal, with the proper slick cover, and with the number "3" on the back. I can't tell if it's an unpeeled Butcher Cover...I've tried, and tried, and tried...would the bleed-through be obvious or should I maybe take it to someone to appraise and determine for me? I was given a stack of records by a friend a number of years ago, and his original "Y&T was among the group...along with an original "Let It Be" box set with book, but that's something else again...
Any advice you can give would be appreciated -- if this turns out to be an unpeeled Butcher Cover, it could send my kid to college!!!
HELP!

The bleedthrough of Ringo's V-neck smock is very easy to spot. If you have a look at my 2nd state at http://www.angelfire.com/realm/paraportal/butcher2nd.html you will clearly see it just underneath the title, to the right of the trunk. If you can't see that it's most probably not a 2nd state.
What condition is it in? Because it's only really the mint condition copes that sell big. My copy cost me $299 but it could sell for about $350-$400. Mint copies without shrinkwrap sell for about $600-800, poor copies sell for about $150, and ones still sealed sell for about $1,500.

Sigh...nope, it's not. Didn't think it was...can't see the bleed-through at all, and I can tell there's only one cover slick. Oh well...thanks for the info, Harb!!

The first state(no second cover pasted over) would be much more valueable.

Which cover is worth more? The pasted over and sealed butcher cover, or the original buter cover with no pasted over cover and sealed? Assuming both are in mint condition?

Yes, and I've yet to see a First State copy with my own eyes. I've seen plenty of pictures of them, but I haven't seen one firsthand. I know when I do, it's going to have a hefty price tag on it.
