One-hit wonders THE OVERLANDERS obtained an illegal copy of THE BEATLES' RUBBER SOUL album, so they could record a cover version of MICHELLE before it was officially released.

The reworking, which climbed to number one in the UK in January 1966, was released just a week before Rubber Soul - and the Fab Four were left fuming at The Overlanders' underhand tactics.

Manager and songwriter TONY HATCH, who also co-wrote the theme tune for popular Australian soap opera NEIGHBOURS, was denied permission to use the song until after The Beatles released their album.

He says, "I won't say how I managed to get hold of a copy but it was illegal.

"Of course, the sheet music wasn't available so we had to take everything off the album."

Why are we just now hearing about it?
Sour grapes? Wanting his name in the paper?

All well and good, except that Rubber Soul was released on December 3, 1965 - 8 weeks before the Overlanders' cover reached the number 1 spot in the UK chart, on January 27th, 1966.

The timing says it all. The Beatles got there first.
