as i'm sitting here having my little john lennonathon, i was listening specifcally to the first 4 beatles albums. there's lots of songs that don't get much air time or discussion of those and so I was wondering, which songs do you guys think are the most underrated?
i'm s sucker for quite a few. it's interesting to see how john was being introspective even that early. i won't name those songs right now as i don't want to end the discussion prematurly, but i'm a sucker for "i don't want to spoil the party." i remember reading somewhere that that was how he was feeling at the time. i've always taken it as a metaphor that i can relate to.
so--now it's your turn. it doens't have to be from those four albums, of course.

i beg to differ on that one. it's known as ringo's finest moment. recently in "uncut" magazine artists named it their #8 fav. of all time. but i suppose it is underrated in the sense that it gets little radio play.

According to Steve Turner's book A Hard Day's Write, John wrote this during the US 1964 tour, as a deeply personal song and it's likely that it was inspired by his growing horror at having to be a happy, whacky Beatle in the company of record company executives, politicians and city dignitaries. From pictures taken on that trip invaribly showed John either forcing a smile or looking as though his mind was elsewhere.

wow, i've never read that. i'll have to look at some footage to confirm that cuz i've never noticed john being fake about his emotions. well, yes, at times. "help" being a great example but on film it's hard to tell cuz as he's said before, the beatle image would just carry them.
i think it's an even more interesting song now. since this discussion isn't moving too quickly, i'll name one more: "there's a place." i think john was just seeing beatlemania begin and his well-needed privacy quickly fading away. i know what that feels like to an extent. very moving lyrics if given different treatment.

You Really Got A Hold On Me, though not written by the Beatles, they sing the rhythem and blues out of it. I hear the original on the radio more than their superb and most excellent rendition.

Hey Bulldog is my fav. underated song. You never hear it on radio and yet it has so much energy and was done in such a good spirit (I believe the beatles all said they enjoyed themselves for that recording session). Pauls bass playing is at its very best on this song. I'm a bass player and to this day it's the only beatles tune that I can't get down note for note. The revelry at the end is so sweet with Paul barking and John telling him "he's got it".

Definitely one of my favs too. I remember hearing it for the first time early on in the film I Know What You Did Last Summer and fell in love with it (not sure who covered it in the film). Of course, that was before I got into the Beatles - didn't even know it was a song of theirs at the time!

I would say "I'll Follow The Sun" and "This Boy" are underrated. In "This Boy", I can't help but smile when John's solo part comes on. The oldies radio station that I listen to has "Beatles Wednesdays" and they don't play "You've Got To Hide Your Love Away" too much, which is also a favorite of mine.

i could not agree more about "it's all too much." both the lyrics and the music itself are perfect.
"only a northern song" is underrated as a psychadelic masterpiece, but the lyrics leave something to be desired (he should have stuck with the orginal lyrics).
i'm not sure if anyone has said this yet, but even if that's true, it bears repeating: "baby you're a rich man" is one of the most underrated beatle songs. it doesn't even sound like them. sure, the lyrics aren't all that clever, but it's a very unique sound.
somewhat along those same lines, i cannot get over how totally awesome "everyman has a woman who loves him" by john is. didn't yoko write it tho...i know she did a version of it. he's singing in a totally different way and the riff simply rocks. phenominal recording.

another one is "good morning good morning"...altho all of sgt. pepper has been, dare i say...overrated, the songs as songs themselves are rarely discussed.
i think of this song as a faster "day in the life." it's got the same theme and is inspired by the same idea (daily routines and how they change). in general, i think its safe to say that as seperate songs to be admired in and of themselves, sgt. pepper tracks are underrated. they'd probably be overrated if they were on any other album.

There's tons of excellent under-rated Beatle songs, like "Think For Yourself", "The Night Before", "I've got a feeling" - I've never seen any of these on favorites lists. The most under-rated song, imo, is "Don't Bother Me". This was dismissed by everyone, including George and I just love it. It's so funky and cool and his voice is so sexy in it. Wonderful.

The lyrics are simple, but it's such an upbeat, toe-taping song. It makes me smile, but I never hear it on the radio.
I like all the ones mentioned above (except R#9). I don't think any of the stations play enough of the Beatles, except for a handful of songs. There are maybe 10-20 songs they play, and they ignore the others

John offered I'll Cry Instead for the stairwell scene but Lester either didn't like it or felt it didn't fit. He decided to use Can't Buy Me Love in its place which is why the song is used twice in the film. I got this information from the Playboy interview with John and Yoko. Here John said he liked the song which is no small acolade given how many of his other songs he dismissed as "rubbish" or "garbage". I don't know if Lester included the song a year later in the video release as a tribute to him or not.

"Mother Nature's Son" is another favorite of mine. The lyrics are pretty and I sing along to it all the time.

"I Want You (She's So Heavy)" and "Long, Long, Long" are way way way too underrated.
Both are simply beautiful.

Yer Blues and I Want You (She's So Heavy) are both super and vastly underrated. John's rhythm guitar solo and lyrics on Yer Blues are awesome as is Ringo's drumming and George's solo. I Want You is my fav. Beatles song. The way it builds up and those haunting hard guitar chords towards the ending are amazing. That song has no lyrics, but it rocks. The drumming is awesome, both guitars rock, and Paul's bass is the most amazing thing I have ever heard. I love these two songs because they show the despair in Lennon's voice and they demonstrate that although the Beatles hated each other they could still make great music.
Also Helter Skelter, which shows that the Beatles could also beat people at metal incredible.

I agree. I always thought that George's Indian Songs(Love You To, Within You,Without You, and The Inner Light) were so underrated. I especially agree with "Don't Bother Me",though. I never understood why even George thought it was trash. He did a wonderful job with that song considering he wrote it by himself and while he was sick in bed. IMO it is so much better than the first Lennon/McCartney hit "Love Me Do". But then George did an interview in Guitar World Magazine in which he called his vocals on the accoustic version of "While My Guitar Gently Weeps" "toilet singing". I guess George wasn't the best judge of his own talent. It's a shame that George didn't have that much confidence in alot of his Beatle songs. He was better than anyone-including himself- thought.

Easy. The most underrated Beatles songs is "If I Fell." It's one of the most beautiful songs John Lennon ever wrote, and I love John and Paul's intricate harmonies. I like this song SO much more than the more acknowledged "And I Love Her."

It appears these songs are underrated because they don't get the airplay that like, Help does or whatever? Well, I think with fans like us, these songs will never be "underrated". I wish there was a radio station that played only the Beatles and their solo songs, too. Would that get tiresome? Ah..NEVER (not with me http://www.beatlelinks.net/ubb/smilies/images/icons/grin.gif)! Too much material to get sick of any of them. Back to reality, there are too many of their songs that don't get the attention, respect or airplay they deserve. Bummer! http://www.beatlelinks.net/ubb/smilies/thumbsdown.gif

Most Beatles songs from The White Album, Let It Be and Abbey Road are underrated, because more focus is put on the issues that lead to the breakup, rather than the excellent musical quality that prevailed.
I've just fallen for "Mother Nature's Son". (That doesn't sound right at all, does it?)
