My Mum's got Billy J's album at home
and I was listening to it the other day
and saw that some songs were written by
Lennon/McCartney and they seem to be
my favourite songs on the album.

Bad To Me
From A Window
I'll Keep You Satisfied

I later found out that John wrote these
songs and gave them to Billy J.

Did John ever make a recording himself
of these songs, or is Billy J the only
one to put the songs out?

Beatle Chick, Lennon-McCartney gave Billy a number of songs to record, here's a brief run-down for you...

Do You Want To Know A Secret? - This was the debut record for Billy J. Kramer & The Dakotas, of course the Beatles recorded this one also which George Harrison sung on the Please Please Me album.

I'll Be On My Way - The B-side of the record above was this one, which Paul had written specially for Billy. The Beatles never put it on record, but did tape a version of the song which was broadcast on the BBC radio show Side By Side on 24 June 1963 (this one's on the Ultimate Experience set I have).

Bad To Me - Kramer's 2nd single, John made a demo disc of this song in March 1963 for George Martin to work from. I have this one on my Ultimate Experience set also.

I Call Your Name - Flip-side of Bad To Me, also written by John who happened to really like this song. When the Beatles came under pressure to produce a number of songs for a new album they dug out this one and recorded it themselves on 1 March 1964. As it turned out, it wasn't required for an album, but they included it on their EP Long Tall Sally, which was released in June 1964. They also performed the number on the radio show Saturday Club on 4 April 1964 (this one too is on the Ultimate Experience set).

Their version of this song was also included on their compilations Rock 'n' Roll Music and Rarities, and in America on The Beatles Second Album. It was used as well on the Beatles Box and The Beatles Collection sets.

I'll Keep You Satisfied - Billy's 3rd Lennon-McCartney single. Again, Paul wrote this one. The Beatles never recorded it but it's likely they made a demo tape of the number, for Kramer & Martin to listen to prior to recording.

From A Window - Kramer's fourth and final Lennon-McCartney single, Paul wrote this one (not John) and the two of them cut an acetate of it for Kramer and George Martin to listen to.

One And One Is Two - This Lennon-McCartney number was also recorded by Billy J. Kramer, although it has never been released. It was mainly written by Paul, and John & Paul worked together on it in their suite at the George V Hotel in Paris after a show at the Olympia Theatre in Jan 1964. They sent a tape off to Dick James the next day for Billy to record, which he did, but John wasn't happy with the number and is said to have advised Billy: "Release that and your career is over." So it was never released, although a version by the Strangers with Mike Shannon was issued in 1964 and flopped. (Both the demo done by John & Paul and the Strangers' version is on the Ultimate Experience set.)

Hope that helps. http://www.beatlelinks.net/ubb/smilies/images/icons/smile.gif

I also have the Billy J versions for these songs, and the Mike Shannon one for "I'll Keep You Satisfied". They're all very good, although my favorite "given away" is still "Badge" written by George and Eric Clapton and released by Cream in 1969. http://www.beatlelinks.net/ubb/smilies/images/icons/grin.gif

That comment of John about "One And One Is Two" made me think that he was, maybe, his worst critic. Recalling his interviews and his own words in the 70's, he hated nearly everything he had written... Songs that are masterpieces for us (like "And Your Bird Can Sing" or "Dig A Pony") are "pieces of garbage" for him... And he doesn't like the way "Lucy In The Sky With Diamonds" sound, nor "Hey Bulldog"... That, I think, shows a lot of his personality.

You mean the comment on "One And One Is Two"? But anyway, yeah, John certainly had a tendancy to change his mind and opinion on songs as each day changed. I guess the period in the 70s when he was depressed a lot he didn't really like anything and passed most of it off as "garbage" but I'm sure deep down he was proud of his work and that of the Beatles.
