View Full Version : Is it worth anything?

Beatle Chick

I was cleaning out some boxes and came across a copy of the daily mirror (Newspaper) from 1980 (announcing john's death) the intire issue is dedicated to him. I would say it's in good condition apart from the paper turning yellow with age.... Are Newspapers with headlines about the beatles worth anything?

I often see them in the Beatles shop selling for a few quid, havn't got a clue whether that's a collector point of view or just trying to get money off the tourists.

I'd say it's worth something. I see you hail from Liverpool Beatle Chick. Why not take it to The Beatles Shop on Mathews Street and see if Stephen can give you an idea? If he's still there. I purchased a pile of Beatle Monthlys from him when I visited in '99. He's a great guy and well respected in the Beatles community.

I would be surprised if it is worth much financially only because, if you think of it, that particular issue and newspaper were fairly widely distributed and let's face it, we're not talking about a document dated hundreds and hundreds of years ago. This is probably still a fairly accessible item, albeit maybe a little more difficult to get than let's say it was the day after it was issued. Now, go and prove me wrong dearie. Truth is, I am not and never been much of a collector so my two cents on this matter is hardly worth a fraction of one penny.

These type of papers regularly turn up on eBay. You might £15-20 for a Lennon or Presley death edition of a UK tabloid. As with many items of this type if there are bidders who particularly want it around at the auction time you might get more. These are certainly not rare, I kept them myself, as did many other people at the time.

I've seen copies sell for about £20-£25. Like carson said, millions of Beatlefans bought it to read about what had happened. Copies would have some desirability to collectors from overseas who didn't have access to a copy back then, or to younger collectors who weren't alive when it was issued.

I have all the newspapers that were in the shops when John died and when George died, was sure what to do with them but I think I will hang on to them.

I've got all the papers from when George died to. I also have about 8 copies of the Anthology promo magazine thing that was given away in the Telegraph I think it was about a week before the book was put on sale. I also got the second part that most people missed. When the time comes (and they become worth something) I plan to part with a couple of copies.

pencil is just as good as pen. Have you got a photo? If so post it here or send it to me and I'll see if I can authenticate it for you :-)
