View Full Version : Should Paul do a John tribute album?

It would be interesting to hear Paul sing Imagine, Across The Universe, I Am The Walrus, etc., but is it necessary? Is it sacriledge? Would it be redundant, or would it be totally cool?

i think that it would be humongously sacrilegious beyond a doubt. Besides which John and Paul had very distinct singing and songwriting styles. Plus i don't think that Mac has anything to prove to the world. To be sure he's already done that. http://www.beatlelinks.net/ubb/smilies/rainbow1.gif

iFrog,
Well put. Paul is under NO obligation to do such a thing. If it came from HIM and HE wanted to do it, that would be one thing.
By tribute, I don't necessarily think that means singing Lennon tunes. I originally interpreted that to mean doing songs that related to John in some fashion. Again, it has to be Paul's ultimate decision.

I wouldn't mind hearing Paul sing some of John's songs. I think it would be http://www.beatlelinks.net/ubb/smilies/cool3.gif. And while we're on this subject, why not get George and Ringo to contribute some also. There have been many tribute albums come out in the last 20-1/2 years, (Has it really been this long?) but Paul, George and Ringo have not done one.

Well put, couldn't agree more. If the Threetles were to reunite for another project, this one would be a great idea. http://www.beatlelinks.net/ubb/smilies/thumbsup.gif

No, I don't think he should. I have seen Paul in concert three times and he did do some John songs (on the last two concerts that I attended) and they were very good. But, a whole album? Not a good idea. Just my opinion.
Change that around and think about it. It's kinda funny...What if the tables were turned and John were here and he decided to do a Paul tribute (not likely, but I'm just playing around). Think how amusing it would be to see John doing "Ob La Di, Ob La Da", which he hated. Just a funny visual.

I agree that it would be a great idea for a couple of songs, no more than three or four, and done by the four of them (like Ringo singing "I Call Your Name" or George taking John's part on "A Day In The Life" or something like that...). But a whole album wouldn't seem so adequate, that's my opinion. http://www.beatlelinks.net/ubb/smilies/images/icons/grin.gif

There are better Paul songs than that that John would chose to do. I Saw Her Standing there, Why Don't We do It In The Road...

John did a version of "I Saw Her Standing There" when he made a guest appearance on stage with Elton John.

What were those Lennon songs that Paul did on his last tour? If I remember right, he did a medley. Like maybe "Help" and "Strawberry Fields" and "Give Peace A Chance." Just guessing. Anybody?

It was actually reported in the late eighties that Paul wanted to record a couple of John tracks "since everyone else has done them"
I'd like to hear Paul tackle Woman......and i'd liked to have heard John in sweet voiced mode sing Every Night......alas !!

Remember he also did a medley of "Love Me Do" & "Please Please Me" called 'PS Love Me Do'... so he HAS done this already.

I have the medley and it surprised me how good it is. But that may be because it is only a few minutes long.
No, sorry, I don't like the idea of Paul recording John's songs on a solo album. It just does not feel right.
The idea of the three doing various Free-as-a-bird kind of things is OK.
As in another topic came to the discussion, name the best John song performed by another artist. Well, Roxy Music is absolutely good, but then ...there were no lists brought forward, which speeks for itself.

Paul is a genius and he knows what to do. It would fabulous if he would do a tribute album to John, but John would do the same for him ? I love both, and THE BEATLES are a unique piece of people, they are a unit.I think he already made his tribute in Liverpool(the medley), but anything heŽll record will be great.gO ON MACCA!!!LOVE YOU.

Welcome to Beatlelinks, Revolution9! I believe John would do a tribute to Paul if the circumstances were reversed.

Ooh, I don't know that I'd want to hear a whole album of Paul covering John's songs...somehow I don't think it would be very effective. Though Paul did do good versions of some songs, as mentioned above re the concert versions, I'm just not sure he could really do them justice...their styles were and are just too disparate!

I would like to remember John for "His" work done "His" way. It stands on it's own very well. At first,it seems like it might be a good idea, but for some reason it just does'nt feel right.
