Another line that was a bit sad was "I don't believe in Beatles."

One line that puzzles me is "I was the walrus, but now I'm John." Both of them claim to the walrus? Can anyone throw any light on the matter?

At THAT particular point in his life, John wanted to rid himself of his image and others' expectations of him... start over again.

He often said "I'm John Lennon, not Ex-Beatle John Lennon". It was a very hard time for all of them in 1970.

So yeah, it think he meant it... but meant it kind of like symbolism.

And let's fact it, the dream WAS over. To a point.

Time heals all wounds and by 1980 things were getting pretty good again. Then in December, the dream REALLY was over.

John was the walrus because of I Am The Walrus, remember? I think he said "the walrus was Paul" in Glass Onion just to throw everyone off.

Kind of a dumb argument, actually.

I believe it said in the book "Revolution In The Head" (and it makes sense), that at the time of Glass Onion, John wrote that the walrus was Paul because Paul was musically dominant at the time, the idea man, the leader if you will. After it was all over, John believes it was him who was the force.

My own take on the walrus bit, was that John was the idea man to start with... He was the driving force that propelled the group to the spotlight... He sought fame and fortune, and made sacrifices to get there. Later, when he said Paul was the walrus, I took it to mean that he had given up that dream, he'd lived it and it compromised him too much. Paul's continuing commercial success, I think, convinced John that Paul had not only sold out, but sold his soul to remain where he was... Thus, now Paul was the walrus...

The meaning of the song God is that in the end,it had to be self-realisation.

As he states in the beginning God is a concept we use to measure our pain.
We always turn to the divine in sufferung.

As to the I don't beleive in part,it is all the false idols John found as it were,or at least that John felt let him down in some way-

Religious (Jesus,Buddha)
"Mystic" books (Bible,I-ching,Gita)
Other forms of religion (magic,Tarot, mantra)Political Leaders(Hitler,Kennedy,Kings(monarchy)...though I doubt he ever belived in Hitler, although he did want him on the pepper cover,)
Pop Culture (Elvis,Zimmerman(Bob Dylan),Beatles)

After all the things he tried to beleive in left him down,he found all to beleive in ultimately is yourself and those you love most I just beleive in me...Yoko and me,that's reality

Hope this isn't too heavy.

I think that at that point, John wanted to be a regular guy, not a legend, or leader. You take everything away and you're "just John", like he was before Beatles.
