The concert for Bangla Desh is set to be reissued on both audio and video (DVD) formats! There is no date yet, but according to Abbeyrd's newspage, George had been looking for the master tapes but was unable to find them. Now they have been located, so things are under way. This will be great! That fresh new sound will be awesome! Also, the wonderful news (!!!) is there will be a new Dylan track on it, maybe "Love Minus Zero/No Limit"!!! Yaaaaaaaaaaaaay!!!!!!!!!

That is fascinating !!!!!

It is such a fantastic set of concerts and I was just playing some of it recently and mentioned for instance the long Wah Wah song which is different from the LP with Jim Horn doing his long solo...

If there could be a bet for the Dylan song I go for If Not For You because they did that during a rehearsal before one of the shows and it didn't make the set...but then again... I am only guessing..so it could be very well Love Minus Zero/ No Limit

Thanks for this update...Hari's Chick...

I saw the DvD AnyRoad pictured so well. You can find it cheap here in holland, but I already had a bootleg version of BanglaDesh. Obviously I will buy the official release when it comes out. I am not so much into Dylan, so I don't know about all the Dylan tracks that could be included as a bonus but a rehearsal for "If not for you" would be great.

Thanks for the update HC.

If we follow a bit what the Harrison Estate has shown us so far... it would not surprise me if it would be before November this year...

Quality takes some time... and I am happy to wait..

Will some of the money from the sales of this DVD go to the original charity fund that was created foir this, back in 1971 ?

FPSHOT
Jun 14, 2005, 04:45 AM
I have no idea if it even still exists or is operational.

No doubt a respectable part of the earnings will go to the Material World Foundation.

I read somewhere that Peter Frampton shot a 8mm colour private version of the concerts .

GOOD AND INTERESTING NEWS

By Hugh Davies
George Harrison's widow has overseen the remastering of the film and music of his 1971 Concert For Bangladesh into a high-definition DVD, a vast project the former Beatle had to abandon when he became ill.

Olivia Harrison said: "It's really stunning. It's been blown up from the original 16 mm to 70 mm. George wanted to get a full soundtrack. Now, you'll be watching a really beautiful film."

The 99-minute film of the charity concert has been restored and remixed, along with 72 minutes of extra footage, for release on HD-DVD in October.

There is previously unseen film of Harrison and Bob Dylan rehearsing If Not For You, with Ringo Starr on drums and then tambourine.

Intriguingly, Dylan decided not to perform his song at the ensuing afternoon and evening concerts at Madison Square Gardens, New York, on Aug 1, 1971.

Harrison, Eric Clapton and Leon Russell are also seen doing a sound check in the arena, playing Come On In My Kitchen. In addition, there is film, seen for the first time, of Dylan playing Love Minus Zero/No Limit at the afternoon show.

Jonathan Clyde, who produced the new project, said the sound had been recorded on 16 tracks by Phil Spector, who was recruited by Harrison after they made his All Things Must Pass recording.

He said: "They were trying to replicate the sound of the album." More than 40,000 people watched the concerts.

Highlights included While My Guitar Gently Weeps featuring Harrison, Russell and Clapton, Just Like A Woman with Dylan, Russell, Harrison and Starr, Here Comes the Sun by Harrison with Badfinger, and That's The Way God Planned It by Billy Preston.

Mrs Harrison said that long afterwards, her husband became fascinated again by the concert, and started working on remastering the sound in the summer of 2001. But he died in November of that year.

"Our work on it is just really a completion of something George had started," she said. "It's always emotional for me to watch him. It's his best ever performance."

This really is most fascinating.

I already thought the original quality of the film is great for that time, and believe me, I have seen it on big screen in a cinema twice and could quite well see it.

The additional parts sound brilliant, new things for us as the Harrisons promissed us and those patient once again are rewarded :smile1:

Quoting Olivia - "It's his best ever performance." I so much agree with her, he has done quite some which maybe even looking back on his carreer after The Beatles and the way he felt about performing live can even be considered quite many.

All his appearances on stage with other artists out of the blue...the tours...the Prince's... and all the other times he was on stage Live...to me this is absolutely the best and still brings chivers when I see it.

George literally set the tone and stage for benefit concerts. I was delighted to hear that the rehearsal for "If Not For You" would be included in this dvd. That is one of my favorite songs.

In the book "Before He Was Fab," which George's sister Lou co-authored, there is a part about how their father Harry, Sr. attended the Concert For Bangladesh. It touched my heart to think of how proud that man must have been of his youngest child. :smile1:

i can't wait for this release. this is without a doubt one of the best concerts i ever was priviledged enough to be able to attend. originally it was supposed to have been on saturday and sunday nights (my ticket on the "abbey road" forum thread has the original saturday night date) but it was changed at the very last minute...literally wednesday or thursday before the show. the mix-up was supposed to have been that madison square garden had double-booked that saturday night so the concert scheduled for saturday was changed to sunday afternoon at 1. in retrospect after dylan came on as the surprise guest we thought maybe it had been changed because he couldn't make it on saturday night. i guess we'll never know what the truth is unless it's revealed in this new dvd. it was the first time dylan had performed since his famous motorcycle accident of 1966 (7? i forget which year) and it was just amazing to see him on stage with george. the excitement in the air before the show started was so palpable you could cut if with a knife and it remained that high through the whole show. a lot of the audience was buzzing about john showing up and until the very end we held hope for him to do that. even without him though, the whole show was without a doubt in my top 10 favorite concerts of all time.

I'm so excited about this. I remember being blown away seeing it at a midnight movie in the 70s. I had to go with my dad and he fell asleep as soon as Ravi Shankar began.

Hopefully the DVD will include a doc about the problem in Bangladesh and how the money was spent.

There's a bit about it in the new Rolling Stone (with Jimi on the cover). The CD and DVD will be out Oct. 25! There's a bonus DVD with a doc and interviews with Ringo and EC and footage of the rehearsal with Dylan and the CD features "Love Minus Zero!"

Yes!! The press release says this....

" 72-minutes of extras...There is also previously unseen footage: "If Not For You", featuring George and Bob Dylan from rehearsals, "Come On In My Kitchen" featuring George, Eric Clapton and Leon Russell at the sound check and a Bob Dylan performance from the afternoon show of "Love Minus Zero/No Limit", not included in the original film....Apple Corps/WMG, will also simultaneously release a special deluxe version (limited to 50,000 copies worldwide) that will feature a 64-page book and other collectibles..."

Yay!

Dari, Oh you are so very lucky to have seen George and Bob on stage together... the Nurk Wilburys :wink3:... awesome.. what I wouldn't give to have seen that show. I think at the show, from what I have heard, that they did not know Bob would turn up until he actually arrived. I think he was being Bob... not sure how his artistic temperment would take him, being spontaneous... and that even George was delighted and surprised a bit to actually see him. :smile1: This will be a special dvd for you, especially, having seen the actual show!

:smile1: yeah...I have also read about that...they had been rehearsing but also because Bob had been out of concerts for a long time, George was not sure if he would come on stage...also because...well HC you know that very well...Bob is "Bob" and he also may have just walked out ...so yeah George in the film is also looking as if he is not sure if his announcement will mean Bob will come on stage :):)...

Same for Clapton. Eric had been on drugs for a long time and was very sick, so even though he said he would be on stage, George was not sure and that is why he had Jesse Ed Davies there, he was the stand-in in case Eric could not make it.

this is sounding better and better!! i've been a huge dylan fan since his early days in the village. after this show, i also became a bigger fan of leon russell who was just phenomenal that night. everyone who participated was. it was just the right show at the right time. sometimes that just happens. we've all seen those awards shows where some "super session" of great acts is supposed to do something great on stage when they all get together and it just doesn't cut it. i don't think that those things can be planned. they just occurr and to be sitting there when it happens is beyond description..

i agree that bob was just being bob. i'm just glad that he decided to be a part of the show because i really do think it could have gone either way. he remains one of the most unpredictable artists out there. don't know that i'd want him any other way though.

I bought a copy on vhs a year ago from my local video rental store when they didn't want it anymore, but when I watched it, it was all messed up!
