Hi There, I am trying to get Pls Pls Me, With The Beatles & For Sale on CD in stereo. It seems that EMI have only issued them here in the UK in Mono. I have managed to get Hard Days Night as a stereo CD from Germany but as for the other three ..... well I could buy them on vinyl and convert them to CD with Adobe Audition as I have done successfully with my Hollywood Bowl LP but there must be an easier way!! Surely someone out there knows where I can buy these three cds in stereo.....think of it as a challenge!

Welcome to Beatlelinks, Jingleman! A splendid time is guaranteed for all.

Where all have you searched for the CDs?

They are available as bootlegs. You can either search for them at record fairs, or trade for them.

It is impossible to get the first four albums on Cd in stereo. You can't even get new copies of the album in stereo on vinyl either! The only way (which is also the cheapest) is to buy one of the late 70's re-pressings - they're only worth about £5-7 each.

I've got copies of the first four albums in Stereo, and when you listen to them you can understand why they were officially released in mono on CD.

I think George Martin was trying to get a concert-feel to the songs, with some instruments in one channel and the others in the other channel. The vocals were *always* squashed up into the right channel.

On vinyl it works, but it gives the listener a headache when trying to listen to it through headphones.

Officially... :wink2:
Unofficially it's no problem. But I agree however that for the first two albums the mono versions are better. But I got a very great sounding german pressing of "Please Please Me" stereo on cd.

Yea, I meant officially...

I think that EMI should make every album in both formats, but make the first four albums in stereo, and from Help to Yellow Submarine in mono mail order only. The die-hard fans would love it.

Or release the CDs with double the tracks, first playing the mono songs and then the stereo.

Hey,

Thanks for all the suggestions & comments. I never really thought about it until I stumbled accross the stereo version of Hard Days Night on Cd (bootleg of original German lp release). I must say that I prefer the stereo mix even though it shows up some so called flaws. I think I will go down the "Vinyl and burn" route as I did with the Hollywood Bowl Lp. I have recently spotted that stereo lps are reasonably abundant on ebay.de (german) so I'll head off there ............

You can hear that some of the stereo mixes where rushed. On Please Please Me John flufs up a line ("Why know I never even try girl"), where for the mono version George Martin edited the song diferently using a different take with John singing the correct line. Sound wise we know that EMI did master the cd's properly. So the problem isn't really that they were released in mono but just the bad transfer to cd.
The original mono lp's sound excelent.

What do you use to burn your vinyl to cd? I've got the German version of Magical Mystery Tour, with true and different stereo mixes of some songs that were released in mono on the U.S. stereo version! MFSL Abbey Road I want to transfer onto cd.

I can always safe myself the trouble and trade for some Dr. Ebbets, but I want to try anyway.

Don't forget to check out the bootleg forum. You can still download some of the stereo Please Please me album. See the Bootleg download pages topic for the link.

What do you use to burn your vinyl to cd?

What I really mean is how do you transfer your vinyl, using Adobe Audition. Do you just plug your stereo system into your pc, like I've done in the past with mixed results, or do you use something else.

Hey There.... To transfer with adobe audition I've found it easier to get the level just right by plugging the turntable into the pc through a hi-fi mini disc player (using this to set the record level) then a little trial and error, and don't forget that with those older EMI tracks you can boost the base slightly in the multitrack before you burn it.....you could just plug the turntable straight into the pc, but I would record them quite quietly and then artificially raise the volume, again in the multitrack as this seems to keep the clarity good and andy distortion to a minimum. And don't forget that this is a good way of getting Cassettes onto cd and again you can rebalance them to reduce muffle and hiss (sounds like a lawfirm!!). Have fun burning .............

Hi

Sorry for taking so long to reply, you use an analogue cable (from hi fi shop) and you plug in into the "line in" jack on your PC sound card. Then if you open up your volume control you adjust the "line in" volume until it isn't overloading (you may have to check the box to select line in) and don't forget to restore the volume controller to it's original settings when your done as you may find other applications are effected. You'll need to experiment around but it is worth it.

And finally, because I know you all want to know, I managed to get vinyl stereo versions of Please Please Me, With The Beatles and Beatles for Sale at a combined price of only £14 - not too sure of what that is in US $ but it wasn't too much money and it reminded me of how much I like vinyl. So now I've decided to do the same trick with the Mono versions of Help, Revolver, Pepper and the White Album. I already have a mono version of Rubber Soul and was surprised to hear the difference. I shouldn't have been though, according to Lewsohn's sessions book much more attention was paid to the mono mixes which were made first up till the end of '68 - I assumed for years that the mono mixes were just reductions from the stereo (something that I did at home with All You Need Is Love to cure broadcasting problems on the hospital radio station which I'm on).

Just a foot note to say that if you don't have Adobe Audition for recording vinyl then there is a way of doing it with Roxio Cd creator, if anyone wants to know how then give me a shout
