Okay folks, I'm gonna throw you my all time Beatle question and see who thinks I'm stupid (we are still thawing out down here in Oklahoma!!): First verse of "Help!"..."When I was younger so much younger than today..." OK. On the stereo, I hear "I never need" or something, after that. But on the mono single, I would swear P&G sing "I was seventeen". With the "S" being quite prominent. Now, this would be lyrically ingenious, but is it really there? Allright, fire away, Beatle-people!!

P&G sing "I never need" just before John sings "I never needed any help in any way"

Does anyone else think they did that to help John remember the myriad of lyrics? (Not that it helped...)Anyway,yes, thats on the stereo and live versions, but I'm still hearing that "S" in seventeen in mono. BTW, I frankly feel a bit sorry for Florida, poor saps!!

Wait a minute. Don't give up yet. The mono and stereo versions of the song are completely different takes. Well, at least the lead vocal track is completely different. I seem to remember the line "And now I find, I've changed my mind" was a good place to tell them apart. In one version the words "changed my mind" are each separately spoken, and in the other version John slurs them together quickly.
Of course, that doesn't answer your original question at all, does it?

Well, I wish Lewishon had went into more detail on this track. ARE the mono and stereo backing tracks totally different? Or just a different vocal? And no, you did not answer my query, but thanks anyway Jerry!

Man, I wish I had my books out where I could get them. One more month. Anyway, I'm pretty sure the mono and stereo version are completely different takes. Does anybody have the 'Rarities' LP handy? I think it's on there, and it should explain everything on the back cover.

Ok, so what does it say on the back of the 'Rarities' LP? I remember it saying they were completely different takes. Anyway, about the month thing - I'm moving. So the Jerry Beatles Library will be permanently moving from out of boxes and into a sweet bookshelf.

Here's what is printed on the "Rarities" LP for "Help!"
Help!
(J. Lennon-P. McCartney) Maclen Music, Inc./BMI (mono) 2:16
There are two versions, each with a different lead vocal. The single version is more rare than the album version so it has been included here. In addition, a "cleaner" British version was used.

Great point Tim! I wonder how many folks know that. Anyway, I checked Joe Brennans variations guide, and he says it's two seperate vocals, maybe 2 different intros. But whats that gotta do with lyrics? I dont know! Thanks Bearkat77 for digging that up.
