"Piggies" is a pretty good song. However, I wouldn't classify it as one of George's best tunes.

Dynamite song from a dynamite album. The lyrics definitely require a second look. As do all of George's songs. http://www.beatlelinks.net/ubb/smilies/images/icons/cool.gif

For those who have not read I Me Mine, this is George's comment.

It was a social comment. He was stuck for one line in the middle part until his mother came up with the line

'what they need is damn good wacking'.

which is a damned good throttling and a nice simple way of saying that they need a good hiding.

It had nothing to do with American policemen or Californian shagnasties.

There was an extra verse which was not used and it goes like this

everywhere there's lots of piggies
playing piggie pranks
you can see them on their trotters
at the piggie banks
paying piggy thanks
to thee pig brother.

A little known fact about this song, is that Paul purposely plucked the string of his bass with quite some force in order to make his bass make pig-like sounds.

In response to the question, yeah, it's a pretty good song, but as Bearkat says, it's not one of his best.

I also like the song. Beautiful arrangements, good harmony, and a good way to do a social comment. Plus, should the credit of that song be Harrison/Lennon/Harrison? Because, you know... John Lennon said "I gave him a couple of verses about forks and knives and eating bacon", and Louise Harrison, George's mother was the one who came up with the line "What they need's a damn good whacking!"

Just on that note, I spotted the following little section in a Woman's Day magazine here (my sister brought it home, I swear!)...

"Will someone tell George Harrison to let it be? The former Beatle has attacked Paul McCartney and John Lennon, claiming their egomania stifled his talent and that he is the Fab Four's best songwriter!"

Nothing that'll start another World War, I'm sure.

FPSHOT
Jan 21, 2001, 11:25 PM
Some Down Under gossip magazine I assume. George has made various comments about not being happy at that time because of too little recording time and too little attention for his material, but he - ofcourse - did not go that far.

There's nothing tricky about it.

Yeah, merely gossip. I'm not sure about George being the 'best' songwriter among John and Paul, but I do think he had a right to feel a little annoyed at a lot of his material being left out.

FPSHOT

It's nice to know that ATMP has been one of the most succesfull solo albums. Some of the material he wrote round 1968-1970 was on it (and some came even later on other albums) and he has been given so much respect and sympathy.

Come on, I'm just joking! Anyway, "All Things Must Pass" must be the best solo album made by any of The Beatles. But George has also complaint about the constant absence of a songwriting partner in his compositions. That's why some of his bridges were completed by people like John ("Taxman", "Piggies"), Derek Taylor ("you know that what you eat you are" on "Savoy Truffle") or even his mother! But that doesn't say anything about his quality as a songwriter: I think he's great. Unless I'm not going to do a lawsuit against him! http://www.beatlelinks.net/ubb/smilies/images/icons/wink.gif

About the bridges being completed and mom adding some info to lyrics ;

You are right about this, but you know that all songwriters - like Paul and John - use a source or a remark or article (think about Sgt. Pepper which is full of it.)

Indeed there are only a few Harrison/Len or Mac songs.

And I'm sure there are also Lennon/Harrison or McCartney/Harrison songs (I can think about "We Can Work It Out", where George came up with the idea of converting the bridge into a waltz or "Got To Get You Into My Life", where George and John added lyrics into Paul's original song). Ringo also wrote with George without officialy giving credit to him ("It Don't Come Easy", "Back Off Bogaloo") and some even say that Sir George Martin should have composer credits in Beatle tracks.

So all I am saying is that the composer credits are a whole other point to comment. And they shouldn't be taken so seriously.

And of course, every composer MUST use a source to write his songs. George, John and Paul do, as everybody else. That doesn't make them better or worse songwriters. They are the best for what they did, whichever way they did it.
