GIMME SOME TRUTH has the best lyrics of any John song. Well, except for Imagine.

"I'm sick to death of hearing things from uptight, shortsighted, narrowminded hypocritics.
Neurotic, psychotic, pig headed politicians.
Tight lipped, condescending, mommy's little chauvinists.
Short haired, yellow bellied son of tricky dicky is gonna mother hubbard soft soap with me."

"Imagine" is by far his best work ever. Other songs I enjoy are "Woman", "Watching The Wheels", "Mind Games", "Whatever Gets You Thru The Night", "Working Class Hero", "Love" and most of all, being this time of year, "Happy Xmas (War Is Over)".

That's a cute thing to do, Litl Lennon! http://www.beatlelinks.net/ubb/smilies/images/icons/wink.gif I'd love to be able to do it some day (actually SHOUT a Beatle song without feeling embarrased).

Anyway, "Mother" is also my favorite Lennon song. Only because is so deep and sincere, but yet so simple. "Love", "Hold On", "Watching The Wheels" and "#9 Dream" would be my other choices.

By the way, joeman2001, it would be easier to say what songs do we HATE by John Lennon or The Beatles, you know, because they are less. ("Power To The People" would be my choice there!" http://www.beatlelinks.net/ubb/smilies/images/icons/wink.gif)

Oooooh, tough question. Can we include both Beatles and post-Beatles work?

Obviously from my sig, "In My Life" is very dear to my heart. I also love "Across the Universe"...the lyrics are some of the most haunting, beautiful poetry you could ever read. "Mother" is brilliant as well, but so personal that sometimes it's painful to listen to. "Imagine" and "Hold On" illustrate the beauty and power of simplicity. Ugh, I could go on and on...

I don't know about the rest of you, but I find it makes me very sad to listen to his "Double Fantasy" work, as wonderful as it is. It just brings back too many memories of his death. I was at an exhibit of his artwork a few weeks ago, and broke down in tears at the handwritten lyrics of "Grow Old With Me," written only 5 months before his murder. What a bloody waste.

Peace!

I'd have to agree with you on In My Life - that's right up there with my all-time favs.

It would be a great experience to go to one of those exhibits, I'd love to see a display that has John and/or Beatles memorabilia some day. It'd be neat to have something like that (John's hand-written lyrics) on your mantlepiece too, behind bullet-proof glass of course.

John's song was "Out The Blue", no "of" in the title. Here's the lyrics to it:

Out The Blue

Out the blue you came to me
And blew away life's misery
Out the blue life's energy
Out the blue you came to me

Every day I thank the Lord and Lady
For the way that you came to me
Anyway it had to be two minds
One destiny

All my life's been a long slow knife
I was born just to get to you
Anyway I survived long enough
To make you my wife

Like a U.F.O. you came to me
And blew away life's misery
Out the blue life's energy
Out the blue you came to me

yes, Out Of The Blue is by George Harrison, Out The Blue is by John Lennon. And guess what...? Out The Blue is one of my favourites...
I also love Borrowed Time (especially the Anthology-version), I Know, Mother, My Mummy's Dead, Gimme Some Truth, Jealous Guy, Oh Yoko! and even Luck Of The Irish (a daft text, but a nice melody http://www.beatlelinks.net/ubb/smilies/images/icons/smile.gif).

So many great songs to choose from. Don't think anyone yet has mentioned one of my personal faves, "Love". I was really thinking about having that played at my wedding, but had "In my Life" instead. I also really like "Watching the Wheels" and "Oh Yoko" Most recently, "Beautiful Boy" has been near and dear to my heart, as I'm the mother of a Beautiful 2 year old boy!

I know I said before that "Mother" is my favourite John song. But yesterday I listened to the whole "Double Fantasy" album (yes, even the Yoko tracks http://www.beatlelinks.net/ubb/smilies/images/icons/wink.gif), and I came to the conclusion that "Watching The Wheels" is my second favourite.

That's because it clearly brings out the new spirit that John would have like to live if he had had the change during the 80's... Just letting the world turn fast, while he would "no longer ride on the merry-go-round" and "just have to let it go"... http://www.beatlelinks.net/ubb/smilies/images/icons/smile.gif He wanted to live more quietly, but somehow he couldn't... http://www.beatlelinks.net/ubb/smilies/cry.gif

We all lost him, and we still miss him.

That two songs, in their "Anthology" versions are really astonishing. They can even make you cry when you think about them in the context of John's life. Two big, big favourites of mine too. http://www.beatlelinks.net/ubb/smilies/images/icons/smile.gif And George Martin's arrangement for "Grow Old With Me" only makes it more sincere and emotional.
