PLANS to build a Beatles themed hotel at the heart of Liverpool city centre are finally on track 13 years after the scheme was first mooted, the Daily Post can reveal.

Bowdena yesterday revealed it has signed a £10m deal with Cavern City Tours to refurbish the derelict Grade II-listed Central Buildings next to the Cavern Club, on the corner of Mathew Street.

It means the 120-bed Hard Days Night Hotel will take its first guests in December, 2006, as tentatively proposed in January when the scheme was awarded £2.3m European Objective 1 funding.

The Bowdena deal represents a dream come true for Bill Heckle and his Cavern City tours teammates, who first conceived the plan more than a decade ago.

Although Bowdena began preliminary work to start clearing the derelict former office building in April, 2004, the company has now formally agreed to sign over the £10m for the full project.

Last night Bowdena's legal adviser Phil Turner said: "Until now the project was largely speculative, but now what was a dream for so long will become reality.

"The signing of this deal means the development is going ahead and the hotel will open its doors for business in December next year."

Mr Turner, partner at Manchester legal services firm Turner Parkinson Creative Unit, revealed the final paperwork was signed with Bowdena two weeks ago.

He added: "The Beatles have inspired so much investment in the city of Liverpool. The Hard Days Night themed hotel is set to become a key tourist attraction and Bowdena are delighted to be involved."
The hotel is set to become a shrine to the Beatles. There are even plans to link its basement to the Cavern club via a tunnel.

Each floor will be dedicated to a Beatles album and each room decorated by murals.

Even the rooftop will have a penthouse suite designed to echo the famous rooftop concert when the Beatles played their last ever gig.

The hotel will be managed by Bill Heckle and his team at Cavern City Tours (CCT), although they will not own the building.

In January, Mr Heckle, together with fellow CCT men Dave Jones, Ray Johnston and George Guinness, were the subject of a BBC2 documentary about their struggle to open the hotel.

The foursome bought the building, confident the project would go ahead, in

1992. But a series of disasters between 1997 and 2001 resulted in Irish backer John Tweedle pulling out.

Millions of pounds had already been poured into the building, which had by then started to become derelict.

The partners' desperate attempts to bring in extra cash took them as far as Spain, before the team finally linked up with Bowdena in 2005.

At the time, Mr Heckle said he was heartened that the hotel would go ahead, but was only disappointed that he would not be one of the owners.

He said: "The hotel completely consolidates and unites the Beatles industry.

"After all the setbacks, I'm glad to be doing positive work and promoting it, instead of fighting it."

That's really cool news...I only regret that it won't open until after I've taken my June 2006 trip to Liverpool. But hey, that means I can stay there when I go back..right? :wink1:

Each floor will be themed to a different album, each room will have a mural done by Shannon (who is a fantastic artist from America who attends Liverpool Beatleweek every year) and there will be two suites on the roof, one dedicated to the rooftop performance and one will be the 'Imagine' suite which will be all white. I'm afraid 'tacky' isn't in our vocabulary....

Good to know. Sorry, I didn't mean to offend, I'm just, well, less than a fan of Shannon's. Her style just isn't to my taste, that's all. :smile1:

I'm with you on this, Rell. Waiting in line to see Billy P. at B-Fest, she had her prints set up. And while I was standing there in line, I was looking a portrait done of George. And she had his nose ALL wrong! Sorry to pick on a nose--especially George's--but it's those imperfections that I notice and irk me about these over-rated artists. I have a b/w ink print of a local unknown So CA artist's rendition of the Rubber Soul album cover that is miles better than any of Shannon's work. But then, that's JMHO.

An information hotline has been set-up for people interested in the hotel, details are on the Cavern website (www.Caverncitytours.com).

Tacky it won't be. Thats for sure. CCT are always quite stylish I think and slick. Usually really well planned and that. I've seen some other Beatles tourist things that are tacky (not in Liverpool) and thats just blatent cashing in on the name and the fandom. But the things in Liverpool, from CCT and from other places always seem to have a love behind them, they're not just out to make money, although I'm sure thats an added bonus. ;)

Anyway, I digress... the building the hotels gonna be in is a lovely old one, so that makes it nice already. Although but of a builders yard at the mo. lol.

Nope not tacky, the oppasite I think - plush and expensive! I reckon its gonna cost about my weeks wages to stay there, so thats another one for when I'm rich. :)

I picked up a leaflet that said the hotels proposed opening would be Dec 2006, is that still the plan, Neil?

Thank you Miss O'Dell, and everything is on track and we are set to open the hotel in Dec 2006.

I hate to leave a turd in the punchbowl, but I walked past it several times this week and I can't see anything happening. I will give the benefit of the doubt and assume it's all internal whats going on at the moment, but it would be nice to see some scaffold or something.

That building has basically been allowed to rot for 10 years, and its a shame as it is a good one with marble pillars and a nice stone front.

Mathew St is there on the left with the Cavern about 30ft down.
Will be nice to see it if/when it finally becomes a reality.

I agree...Shannon is the best for the job. I follow artwork from China to America and all countries in between. She is amazing. Friends and fans of her works are the likes of Steven Tyler (aerosmith), Rick Nielsen (cheap trick), Sly Stallone, and Bruce Springsteen. She is by far, an amazing asset to the hotel and we have waited for this to happen for a very long time. Mostly because of The Beatles (of course) and Shannon's decor is right up there. We need this! Thank you Cavern City Tours.

I just aquired this new George Painting by Shannon. It was emailed to me and I was told this may be one of the murals in the new Hard Day's Night Hotel. I hope so!

China, how lucky you are to have that picture of George!
I love it! I wish I had that framed and hanging in the
guest room.

Shannon even captured the waves in George's hair!
She also got the intensity in his eyes and expression!
I love that picture. She is quite an extraordinary
artist with an exceptional level of talent.

What an honor - think of the places where her work
has been shown!
