Shall we take the plunge? This is an open-ended thread dedicated to the interpretation and analysis of any and all Beatle lyrics within and without the context of the song they were meant for. As we all know there are so many to choose from. All comments are welcome. Let the games begin!

Wanna start with Revolution 9?
Actually, this song's extremely deep and way ahead of it's time. I personally don't mind it. Apparently, if you listen to it backwards (there's an MP3 of Rev 9 backwards here - http://www.kingtet.com/number9/number9.mp3 )
There are all kinds of sounds that you can't hear when playing it forwards, like car crashes, sirens, and Paul screaming, 'Get me out!, Get me out!'

Housing one of the biggest collection of clues on a single website, Paul is Dead - The Conclusive Evidence (http://www.paulisdead.net) is just what you need to make a final decision about this conspiracy.

Yes and i haven't heard the song in a while. Seems to me it starts out with George Martin talking and ends with the sounds of the crowd shouting at a football game or something. But i can't really identify a refrain or lyric or even a chorus. There are also a lot of phrase and nonsensical words thrown in there, but some are deep. Like John i believe saying "As time goes by you get a little bit older and a little bit slower." Proof positive that Lennon wasn't one to beat around the bush when it came to making a statement.

Here are the lyrics to I'm Only Sleeping. I love that leisurely sleepy melody. http://www.beatlelinks.net/ubb/smilies/images/icons/wink.gif

When I wake up early in the morning,
Lift my head, I'm still yawning
When I'm in the middle of a dream
Stay in bed, float up stream
Please don't wake me, no don't shake me
Leave me where I am I'm only sleeping

Everybody seems to think I'm lazy
I don't mind, I think they're crazy
Running everywhere at such a speed
Till they find, there's no need
Please don't spoil my day
I'm miles away And after all I'm only sleeping

Keeping an eye on the world going by my window
Taking my time
Lying there and staring at the ceiling
Waiting for a sleepy feeling
Please don't spoil my day I'm miles away
And after all I'm only sleeping

Keeping an eye on the world going by my window
Taking my time
When I wake up early in the morning,
Lift my head, I'm still yawning
When I'm in the middle of a dream
Stay in bed, float up stream
Please don't wake me, no don't shake me
Leave me where I am
I'm only sleeping

I believe the transcript of the beginning dialogue between George Martin and a Tape Engineer goes:
E:I would have got you a bottle of claret if I had known George, I'm sorry. Do you forgivem me?
G:Yes
E:Bit**.
It's much louder and clearer on the mono version of the song.

I would like to say that Revolution 9 is not a song...it's a musical mounting created by John and Yoko, although is was Paul who began with all the experiment stuff (like Carola said). Paul played the piano in the begining of the song...Paul, George, Ringo and George Martin wanted to eliminate this mounting of the White Album...specially Paul.

ok everyone, just to say right off the bat i am a new beatlefan so chances are i will stick my foot in my mouth quite often, but actually I had a question about the song "Dig a Pony":
in it john sings "I roll a stoney-- well you can imitate everyone you know." Now, me being the kinda gal who reads into things WAY too much, can one of you swell gurus out there tell me if that line is by any chance a jab at the Rolling Stones? Maybe accusing them of imitating or somethin like that? Like I said, I'm just going off on a tangent here.
Thanks!

i dunno. John Lennon was a get in your bloody face kind of guy, if i'm reading the literature right.
John drew alot of lines in the sand with his music and in his lyrical treatments; and he invariably stuck to those limits. http://www.beatlelinks.net/ubb/smilies/hammer2.gif

Ahhh. Finally we reach philosophical critical mass here. http://www.beatlelinks.net/ubb/smilies/lightbulb.gif
Is Revolution #9:
1)a "John & Yoko" song only, and
2)is it even a song to begin with?
i say the influences between such vital and vibrant forces such as s those that you have in the early Beatles probably rubbed off on one another. i for one find it inexplicably ludicrous to label most of their (early) songs either purely Lennon or purely run-around McCartney.
It's a song, it's a musical composition, it's a sonic experiment, still one of a kind to this day, inasmuch as there are musical passages in the track, albeit most are indeed backwards masked as are most of the voices that are indeed heard. But to be sure this single track defies adequate description and coherent analysis. Perhaps this 'defiance' was the true intent of this track... and nothing more. What "you" see into this track is what "you" see and nothing more.
At the time, and i'm sure it's still true today, it was the most stand out track on the entire double set. i would go so far as to say that it is the centerpiece for one of their greatest musical achievements.

So what? It is still not a song. Show me the chord progressions, the musical structure, the instrumental arrangements... the "melody". It's not a song. Maybe if you're into avant guarde you may think it is, but to me, an average person with a tiny little brain, a thing like that is everything but a song.

one could argue that it's an exercise in technical but random creation, a creatively engineered piece.
But one could also argue that I could record rush hour traffic, the weather forcast, and someone snoring, than cut up the tape and have my 8 year old niece tape it together again and get a comparable result.
http://www.beatlelinks.net/ubb/smilies/laugh2.gif
It's obviously not one of my favorite compositions.

musical structure
It has indeed an underlying structure, consisting of random human voices and lots of backward masked musical notes. How do you define "musical structure?" Seems pretty much relative terminology to me. Sure it appears more or less random to the naked ear, but maybe that's the intent here.
And there are tens of thousands of songs out there that do indeed adhere to some sort of compositional standard of excellence or another, but are just pure crap. You can't deny it. Like i said before everything is relative.

instrumental arrangements
There are instruments in there, sure enough backwards masked but they are there just the same. The continuity is much more evident when played backwards i presume.

the melody
Once again a relative term tuned to your liking. The answer i would suppose would be to seek out and discover a truly montonic and rigid definition for what actually makes a melody or a melodic structure. Unfortunately there is no such definition. The song is indeed defined by it's apparent randomness when played forward, and has many big surprises to be found when played backwards.
Don't even tell me that Revolution #9 isn't a one of a kind recording, clever, earth-shattering, or truly innovative. n fact that compostion is guilty on all those counts.

Let's let this part of the discussion end here before things get a little hot under the collar. Everyone is entitled to their opinion about "Revolution 9", that is a given. It appears on a Beatles album, also a given. The only thing to add to this discussion now is whether or not I should close this topic.

No Me Molestes
Are you happy now? Because I still don't understand the question
