abbey road remaster

on the abbey road cd 1987,states that the cd had been re-master. Though this cd wasn't re-mixed, how could the record company state that it had be re-mastered? I don't get it.

Let me try here. When you mix an album, you're dealing with the levels of each track on the songs. Like you might mix the bass higher than the guitars, and then push up the guitar during a solo. When you master an album, you're dealing with the overall sound. Like highs and lows and stuff like that. I think that the CDs required new mastering, because the quality of the sound you hear on CDs is much different that LPs or tapes. Something like that.

thanks for the reply, but does anyone know how the beates or the record company could say that the album was re-mastered? Did the recording of this cd come from the original master tapes or did they come from the master of the orginal album?

From my ears,as an example, "something" on the new #1 cd sounds remarkably cleaner than it does on the Albey Road cd. The #1 cd also says it had been re-mastered, but most likely remixed also from the original recording of "Something" which sounds a bit dull comparably. I think this is becouse it came from the album master not the orginal tape masters. Does anyone know if the Albey road cd came from the tape masters?

I would be very surprised if the new CD was remixed. I don't have it yet (yeah, I know!) , but I can't imagine them remixing the songs for the release. People want to hear the exact same mixes that went to #1. These aren't any old songs that can just be changed around. But it is very probable that they were remastered. Like I said before, this could bring out better sound and make things more clear. I'm sure the techniques for remastering improve all the time.

tveyes : As Jerry stated above, the 1969 Abbey Road original sound was "Digitally" re-mastered in 1987. (Better sounds, more or less bass depending on the song, crisper reprises, & the latest technology EMI had back in the 1987 "Digitally" time-frame.) The technology now in the year 2000 has upgraded it's old 1987 systems today. I believe the original engineer for the 1969 Abbey Road cut was the same engineer (Geoff Emerick) re-mastered the 1987 "Digitally" CD cut. Good question tveyes..! Thanks,

all is great with all replys, but please answer the question was Albey road re-mastered from original tapes or from the master albam master? Does any really knows?

When the decision to release digital co's,the original master tapes were recorded on a digital recorder.The music was filtered to remove tape hiss and the various "sounds"were recorded louder,or " up front".With the background noise now gone,more of what was recorded can now be heard.When a recording is released on more than one compulation,it is not "re mixed" again,but taken from the "digitized" recording.
