I am in need of a little advice. I am about to embark on an incredible journey. My husband and I are going to Maui. We plan on riding a bike around the isalnd and I plan on stopping in Hana.
I do not want to intrude on 'George's space' as a fan, but I want to certainly experience all I can that was dear to him.
If that makes sense, does anyone have any suggestions, or reading material that I could look into. Thanks.
Also...does anyone think that it would be wrong to wear a Beatles shirt when I go....

I wish I could say I had been there, you "lucky lady"to offer some advice, I definitely would wear a Beatle shirt and you have to get a flowered shirt while there too... a bike ride sounds great! :teeth1:

Oh, you are going to have so much fun!!!!
Hana is wonderful! You gotta see so much... like the Seven Sacred Pools (here is a link to get you in the mood... http://www.boomercafe.com/beatleswimming.htm), and Haleakala (maybe when you can say "there goes the sun/ Here Comes the Moon"!), and there is that uke shop George went to in Maui (anyone have that link? I forget and could not find it...but it was posted here at Links before).
A great book is called Maui Revealed by Doughty and it has great info and pics... about 27 pages on Hana alone. I have titles of some books I read on hawaiian mythology I can dig up, back from when I went, that were interesting to read, too. :smile1:
Hana highway is supposed to be about 38 miles and take an hour to drive, but took us three because it is so beautiful...so even on bike especially don't miss that! We stayed at Hotel Hana Maui .. it has a nice localish art gallery and decent but overpriced food. For excellent food try Mama's just before Hana highway for at least one meal. It is famous for how awesome it is with the local folks! It is so so GREAT!
On the other side of Maui, don't miss Hard Rock cafe, but watch the Hurricane (drink) because even though you get to keep the glass (!!!!!!!) if you can finish the drink.... it is not worth that the next day!!! :barf2:
Oh, you are going to have an amazing time! Hana is a quiet place and any Beatle shirt will only be met with smiles I think!

I am really excited for you! You won't even imagine how beautiful Hana is. When are you going? You know in June they hold the annual Slack Key Guitar Festival at the Maui Arts Cultural Center! I believe they also have a big uke thing in that same show. :smile1: Oh, you lucky girl!

Hmmmm a full report... I knew this would be difficult.
Quite simply..had a very good time. Not the trip I envisioned...but I am not sure what I thought it would be. Like I already said..the touristy feeling was hard to deal with. We went with three other couples who had plans on what they wanted..so even tho we were there for a week...I felt alot of time was 'wasted'.
But on to the good things about the trip. We did a little snorkeling which was fun..and the only time I actually went in the ocean. We did a Luau, good food, fun entertainment..and unlimited maitais...unfortunatley at that altitude...they did little for me,lol. I do believe we travelled just about every highway on the island..and many 'side roads'. Beautiful country when you look past the 'civilization'.
The highlight of the trip for me was the one day Harley ride to the top of the volcanoe. I felt at 'home' on the bike....and the scenery was much like home. I got very little color...but that is okay... I can lay out and get tan here.
Now on to the 'topic' at hand. For those of you that do not know Hana, I will be cliche and say just go......It is the kind of place that you will get out of it exactly what you want.
The time restraints and company that accompanied me there did not show me the side of Hana I wanted to witness....but I saw it...felt it...knew it was there. I quaint little town..no, village that seemed to speak true Hawaii to me. I didn't even get out of the car...but that didn't keep me from seeing the beauty. And for those that don't know about 'The Road to Hana'....it is in itself is a road to the heart of the island. It is 52 miles, 37 of which is a narrow, winding, 15 mph, at times one lane road...laced and full of beauty...side trips...and sights to behold. It took us 4 hours jut to go those 52 miles.....exhausting,lol. The other road 'out' of Hana I can only imagine is even more full of the magic...much of it is 'forbidden' for rental cars.
I could certainly see how it attracted our George there. And of course every little driveway I passed..I thought..could that be his piece of heaven?
No uke purchase....but that is okay...
Glad to be back.

:flower1: I am so glad that you did the snorkel thing, that is the best, I have snorkeled several times for hours in the Caribbean, bliss to me!!!
I am sorry that you didn't get to do more things you perhaps would have liked more, glad to see you got out on the bikes....That volcano sounded cool! I went to the top of an active one on one of the islands in the Caribbean, awesome!
Were the people of Hawaii friendly? I would have been in the water all the time, how was the place you stayed at? was it a resort?
sourmilkpinky
Apr 30, 2005, 08:31 PM
I found the people of Hawaii friendly.....This is a hard concept for me cause I am the type to rarely begin/carry on 'personal' conversations with 'strangers'. I figure they are there to do a 'job' and don't have the time for the 'likes' of me,lol. But some of the people I were there with were the 'talkative type' and from listening in (as well as I can) to their conversations..very friendly...except for much of the resataraunt wait staff..but that is a whole other topic :)
We stayed at a typical hotel type..not quite a resort...no golf course on the property...they didn't do there own luau or shopping mall...but had the salon..massage palour, 2 pools and such... right on the beach..maybe a mini resort, lol.
I think the only reason I didn't spend the whole time in the water...my husband doesn't swim...at all...doesn't float and doesn't do the 'beach thing'. I was quite surprised and impressed we got him out on a boat and snorkeling in 35 feet or so water ;)
But I think we saw more of that island than most...and if we had a bike the whole time...we would have covered every square inch of road dirt or paved, lol.

Will your husband do the 'wading in the water' thing at all? :wink1:
Glad you got to do some snorkeling! I bet that'd be tons of fun to try. Sorry you also had to travel with the other groups and didn't get as much done as you would've lliked, but it still sounds like you enjoyed the trip. Did you get a tan?
sourmilkpinky
May 01, 2005, 10:27 AM
LOL...nope no tan...a tad of color maybe. Every one said use the sunscreen...so I did...hmmm...and a hat.... and yes the husband 'wades'.....but not when there is more exploring to do :) It is funny, we couldn't get him off the rocks. Every place we stopped he would wander out on the slippery rocks overlooking deep choppy water...I was just glad that he never fell in...He kept saying...it is okay..Shelly's an experienced swimmer....I see a big difference between fresh water lake swimming and ocean swimming, lol.

Oh, your trip sounds wonderful~ ***smiling about the driveway comment*** ~ it is a feeling like..hmmm, maybe there? there? there? LOL... Isn't it so beautiful? And taking so many hours for the Hana hwy, yes yes! There is just so much beauty there...the waterfalls... lush surroundings... we also had someone try to sell us pot, lol, and someone did sell us a hat woven from long native leaves. I saw one woman meditating nearby a waterfall on the Hana hwy. Did you happen to see the roadside grotto with Virgin Mary? That was in Hana~ someone had put a garland of flowers around her.
I'm glad you guys snorkled! That's fun! :smile1: :fish:
I hope you got heaps of pictures!

I did see the Virgin Mary...also noticed the Budhist Temple...kinda wanted to check that out....Lot's of pics..for us anyways. I will try to post some a bit later.
Absolutely gorgeous tho...very interesting people along the roadside there...If our car hadn't been full...I would have loved to pick up a few of the hitchikers ;)
