I had Rubber Soul on in my car and got to The Word.

This song is not so popular in polls, but as we know once in a while a catchy song comes along.

I played it about 10 times in a row.

It is really funky and has great harmonies. In the 'Badge' John seems to be enjoying himself, he almoste screems like in the 1963 days.

Great song.

I really really love the bass in "The Word". It's just one of those little details that's in there that totally works!! I think that the lyrics are awesome too - really simple but they really say it!
I reckon that this song is definitely under-rated!

I believe "The Word" started what "All You Need Is Love" finished.

"Say the word I'm thinking of.
Have you heard?
The word is 'love'.
It's so fine, it's sunshine,
It's the word 'Love'."

A well crafted song, but not one of the most popular. Maybe the theme is too cliche'?

I agree with you kat. In fact, didn't John once say that himself??

It's a shame that 'the word' gets looked over cause I think it's a great song. IT has a great hook to it, it's one of my driving songs ( of course "Piece of my heart" and "Silly Love Songs" are some of my driving songs so there isn't really a stiff criteria for it)

The Word is pure gold. It was influenced by drugs in a way and it predated the "Summer of Love" and hippies by 2 years. Paul's bass was rarely better.

I am playing Rubber Soul and when it came to The Word, I had this groovy feeling again about this song...it's such a funky uptempo song with awesome vocals and especially that high falcetto voice which makes Barry Gibb wanna hide embarresed, I just love love love it.

So also because we have a few new members since this thread was on, I put it back.

Oops, Michelle starts...better put it back to The Word, as an ode to Legs

I like The Word very much, it's one of my favourite tracks on Rubber Soul.
Wasn't it the first love song the Beatles wrote that was not about boy/girl, but love in general (like All You Need Is Love)?

An old topic I missed the first time around. :wink1: I love this one! One of their earlier peace songs, but it's a winner, especially its bass part. The bouncy melody makes me feel great. :smile1:

Isn't it good

I love this song too! After the "Everywhere I go, I hear it said" verse, the third time John sings "the word", he affects a very Northern accent so that it sounds like "the werrrrd". :laugh5: That cheeky little bit just makes the song for me. I think I'll listen to it now. :music2:

I like this song. Great lyrics, great piano intro, and vocals (well, except John's solo voice). Plus, great bass from Paul!

Do you mean you don't think John's solo voice is great in this song? :bigeyes3: I certainly agree about the bass line--Paul has so many of those inventive lines.

"The Word" is one of the most underrated tracks in the Beatles' canon. I absolutely love it. I was just listening to the UK stereo mix versus the unique US mix, which has John's vocals double-tracked. The US mix has the vocals all on one channel, too. I must say I prefer the standard cd mix of this track because the vocals are centered.

Nope, weak voice in my opinion :wink1:

Not long ago I had to try some new music system and the song I chose to hear really loud is this one.

I love it, one of my favorites, if not my favorite.

I love this song!!! My favourite on Rubber Soul!!! It's so funky and groovy and great!!!
Being a non-musician, I rarely feel qualified to comment on the musical aspect of a song. But I know what I like and I must tell you that this was the first song on which I really noticed the bass guitar.....and I love it!!! When I listen to songs now, I purposely listen out for the bass to make sure I'm not missing out on anything great!!!

And John has a wonderful voice in this oneVery wonderful. His voice is an absolute perfect fit for the lyrics.

An old topic I missed the first time around. :wink1: I love this one! One of their earlier peace songs, but it's a winner, especially its bass part. The bouncy melody makes me feel great. :smile1:Yes this song has alot of bounce and a nice edge to it. The dreamlike quality of the lyrics, coupled with the tight rhythms underneath gives it it's uniqueness and makes it a keeper. It is vastly underrated.

Another great song that just becomes an album track on one of the Beatles' albums. I love the little up and down piano thing that goes on.
