One day, I'll be able to say; "I own a Butcher cover!" Until then, I'll just have to wait it out and find one in reasonably good condition and a fair price.

I found one on eBay recently on eBay for $49.99 which was in alright condition I suppose. I put a proxy bid on for $70.00. All was alright when there was 5 minutes to go. I had a leson to go to so I stopped there. Some git outbid me 6 seconds before the auction ended. I'm very cross and annoyed. I might even email him a nasty letter.

It was probably the seller outbidding you because the bidding didn't go high enough. That's what sucks about internet auctions.
I did find a butcher cover a few years ago very cheap, and I bought it just to complete my collection. It's in terrible condition. It looks like a baby ripped off the new cover. But hey, it's a real butcher album. So until I win the lottery, I'm stuck with it.

Harbidge, I have samelike experience at e-bay. It's just a few people, like the seller, who wait for the right moment to hit just before closing.
It has no use to comment against it. That's the way it goes. Make sure you are there at closing time or have someone else do it for you.

It'll happen one day. I've got some good stuff off of eBay for around a pound. I got an original Strawberry Fields picture sleeve for £1.50, and a copy of All You Need Is Love without the TV credit. I got it for £2.50.
Don't give up hope. Patience will reward.
Remember people, if you're worried about spending too much on a Beatles album, remember my little saying,

Not even. It's definitely a work of art and as relevant today as when it was commissioned by Capitol Records to be the next Beatles cover. Remember also that this was the dark ages. The sixties i believe. http://www.beatlelinks.net/ubb/smilies/images/icons/wink.gif

Yes, I remember. And I thought it was cool at the time, with their stoned out faces on the cover. I appreciate the reason for it, but it just doesn't seem quite so attractive today.
And I don't believe Capitol commissioned it. The Beatles sent it to them in response to the way Capitol was changing the song sequences around and not releasing them the way the Beatles had planned, in order to squeeze out more albums. It was then recalled and that is why it is so collectible.

Absolutely i would hang it on my wall. In fact i have done so, even when i didn't understand it's true Beatle relevance or it's underlying meanings. i mean the expressions on their gargoyle like stone faces are so surrealistic yet so sincere. It's really hard for me to try to pin an absolute value on the expressions on their faces, maybe that's why i like it so. http://www.beatlelinks.net/ubb/smilies/images/icons/cool.gif

It was never a protest on Capitol.
It was to be part of series of three known as Somnabulent Adventure,of which the Butch ober shot was the middle. The first part, the "birth" was to feature umbilical cords of bangers, and what the last was to feature I'm not sure.
BTW,the shot was also used on the UK Paperback Writer adverts.

But I've read an interview with Paul himself (or was it John? Maybe even George?) where he talked about the cover as protest against the butchering of their albums by Capitol.
Please tell me this umbilical cord thing is some kind of personal joke that I don't understand or know about.

Here is the direct quote from Robert Whitaker, the photographer:
"I wanted to do a real experiment-(but) people will jump to wrong conclusions about it being sick,
But the whole thing is based on simplicity-linking four very real people with something real.
I got George to knock some nails into John's head, and took some sausages along to get some oher pictures, dressed them up inwhite smocks as butchers, and his is the result-the use of the camera as a means of creating situations."
