Near the end of the piano at the end of A Day In The Life, there is a squeeking sound. Is the sound caused by the studio door or by the piano bench?

Sorry, Jerry, I just had to ask.

Hey, I'm curious too. I remember reading in "Recording Sessions" that it was a piano bench. Or maybe I read it in the CD booklet for "Sgt. Pepper's." Anybody else know anything?

According to the Internet Beatles Recording Index, under ooops for A Day in the Life:

"A chair squeaking (three creaks total). Also reported as a "nose sniffle", paper rustling, someone saying "Shh!", sustain pedal being released on the piano ..."

No mention of a door. I shall keep looking. I wonder if Sir George mentions it in The Making of Sgt. Pepper. I'll have to watch it again and find out.

I've read a couple of times that it was the piano bench (like in "A Day in the Life :The Music and Artistry of The Betales" - I think!) but then I have been told that it was the sustain pedal aswell.

It sounds more like a bench than a pedal to me!

It was definitely a piano bench. John, Paul, Ringo and Mal Evans shared three pianos. The simultaneous striking of the "note" (E major) took nine takes to perfect. Once recorded, George Martin overdubbed it three more times, compounding it further on a harmonium.
