I'm pretty certain Pink Floyd would be quite high in the top 50.

Well, it's a list of the most influential artists, not necessarily the best or the most creative. Perhaps the good and wise powers of Rolling Stone Magazine did not feel that Pink Floyd influenced anything. The Ramones were one of the bands that created the punk movement, and, as far as I understand it, Public Enemy and Run-D.M.C. were responsible for cementing hip-hop's place in the pop-culture firmament of the 1980s and 1990s. Nirvana is a bit more iffy, because the grunge movement wasn't nearly as widespread or pervasive as hip-hop or punk culture. However, many other bands on the list I find to be of doubtful influentiality (which is of course a perfectly legal word! ;P). I mean, Buddy Holly, The Velvet Underground, Little Richard, Bo Diddley and Smokey Robinson are probably far more influential than Jimi Hendrix. Simon and Garfunkel, U2, Prince, Neil Young, The Clash, Patti Smith, The Doors, Van Morrison, Janis Joplin, Elton John, and The Band weren't very influential at all. And where are The Sex Pistols?!?! They were one of the most revolutionary bands of all time and their influence still reverberates today. They were equally if not more crucial than the Ramones and (also left out) Richard Hell and the Voidoids and Radio Birdman to the creation and flourishing of punk. The Clash, well, I'm not going to judge them musically, but they aren't as important from an historical standpoint. The Who's inclusion is a bit shaky, but arguable--however, The Kinks and The Yardbirds deserve to be there too, and higher up. I think this list is inherently flawed because it focuses solely on the mainstream and is skewed towards an American perspective.

Like Ailurophile said, Public Enemy,Run D.M.C,Nirvana the Ramones etc, deserve to be there, they represent their respective genres just as much as Elvis and the Beatles define rock and roll, however I disagree that Jimi Hendrix is less influential then some of the artists listed. All in all its not a bad list, however the Floyd deserve to be there somewhere

I think the list sucks. My opinion though.

As you all know, I think lists are stupid and useless, but I'd really like to read the assessment of the Kinks by Peter Buck and Elvis Costello by Liz Phair. Interesting combinations there where I like both artists.

I think lots of people were very into Nirvana, but still... Pink Floyd should have been in the top 15 or 20! Also, Johnny Cash should have been much higher up the list. Van Morrison is on it, but not the Grateful Dead???

I dunno...Elton was super influential in the 70's, and in the 80's U2. The Doors were very influential as well, imo.

Also, Neil Young they call the Grandfather of Grunge, so he definitely deserves to be in the list. :smile1:

Grateful Dead #55- If you get a chance to look at the magazine, the illustration for the dead is really cool (as well as the Frank Zappa one) and I'm sure would make a really cool poster for any deadhead :D

Now that I think about it, another group that should have been in there somewhere-Queen!! Every band with a frontman in the last 25 years must have been influenced in some way by The legendary Freddie Mercury!!
