Please bear with me... has anyone out there ever seen a photo of Paul during the taping of the Paperback Writer video, with his Hofner. Sure, but CLOSE UP? I had a shot of the bass like that, so close you could see cracks in the finish. Now, I've been called crazy for this one, so has anyone else ever noticed it?

I was watching the video last night, although I'm not sure what you're getting at. Are you just saying that it had some cracks on the varnish, or something far more sinister?

Housing one of the biggest collection of clues on a single website, Paul is Dead - The Conclusive Evidence (http://www.paulisdead.net) is just what you need to make a final decision about this conspiracy.

No, I do mean cracked varnish. The point was that the bass must have been refinished at some point, however, I've been taken to task for this view. I mean, cracked finish before, no cracks (and darker finish) now. Thats the whole thing really; if one is not interested in musical instruments, it may seem pointless! Sorry!!http://www.beatlelinks.net/ubb/smilies/images/icons/smile.gif

I've noticed the cracks before. I've noticed them oh John's Rick's, too. As well as the paint wearing off from where he had it painted black (early 60's, first Ed sulivan Rickenbacker).

Paul said the old Beatles set list was still taped to the back of it when he picked it up again in the eighties......

Yeah that's true - I've seen some close-up photographs of it in a guitar book. I believe it was from the final concert in Candlestick Park (from the set-list it definately could be). About the cracks: I know that he's had some work done on the 'action' over recent years, but I don't know if it's been re-finished.

Hey, thanks Beatle people. The point was, I got killed on another forum by know it alls for even bringing this up. That was before I discovered Beatlelinks, tho, folks! If anyone has a picture of Pauls "cracked bass" I can post, I'd thank you for life! Get hold of me here or at my site.

I held one in my hands once. Even played a few notes on it. Those things were as light as the breeze. Long neck too.

I owned an original 66 Hofner Bass several years ago and mine had Checking cracks in the lacquer finish due to age which is very common in vintage instruments. But in the case of the cracks in photo your refering to the bass would have only been four years old. I know the Beatles were fairly rough on their instruments through the years as photos show and it is possible that Paul could have had it refinished. Maybe Paul's personel instrument tech man John Hammel would know for sure. If anyone knows of a Hofner for sale please let me know.

The city where I live (Leeds) is home to the World's Hofner Specialist. It's a shop called Music Ground where they actually make Hofners and they have LOADS of them. You can specify what type you want and even get it customised if you wanted to. I'd like to get one, but wouldn't play it on stage cause I don't wanna seem like a McCartney copy cat!
