The Beatle's influence

The Beatles influenced a lot of groups, I know. What evidence have you found of this and in what groups/songs did you find it in? Most recently, I was listening to my Fastball CD, and in the song "which way to the top" they say "here we sit like blackbirds, with our broken wings" NOW, maybe I'm just crazy, but wouldn't you say that is a little bit of a beatles tribute there? If I'm wrong, then I give you permission to smack me upside the head, ok?

i only smack people upside the head if they say something crude and inappropriate. anyway, i know it'll come as a big surprise to all of you that EVERYONE was influenced by the beatles in some way or another. they were and are ubiquitous, you can't possibly avoid an influence. people don't have to quote john & co to have been influenced by them.

How true. As stated in the Garcia/Beatles post, they became a rock and roll band after hearing and seeing the Beatles.

Well, if you're going to say that everything post Beatles is influenced by the Beatles (which I basically agree with), you have to recognize the musical debts that the Beatles owe. Just as so many bands have stood on the shoulders of the Beatles' greatness, the Beatles themselves stood on the shoulders of artists like Elvis Presley, Little Richard and so many others. Every artist owes a debt to the ones who came before, including the Beatles.

Glenn- I couldn't agree more. I think that most, if not all groups that formed after the beatles were influenced by them. I think the better question is: How could they not be influenced by the beatles?

Glenn: The Beatles often said how great an influence people like Buddy Holly, Elvis, Little Richard, Carl Perkins, Chuck Berry and other early rock & rollers were on them. They never hesitated to acknowledge those who came before, and rightfully so. I always admired that about them. Even when they were on top of the musical world, they paid respect to other performers. Of course, they themselves turned the entire planet around with their unique genius, and I agree that all who followed were influenced in some way by The Fab Four!

To tell you the truth all music that has been or will be has been infuenced at some point by someone that came before, all the way back to clasical music even. That's the great thing about music is that it is always growing.

You know, the Beatles covered Chuck Berry, Carl Perkins, and Little Richard, but not Elvis or Buddy Holly. I guess they never got around to it or had copywrite issues.

That was a good Holly cover. So was 'Crying, Waiting, Hoping' - thought they did that one brilliantly.
Oh, so was 'That'll Be The Day.'
Holly songs they never recorded but sang were, Peggy Sue, Everyday, It's So Easy, Maybe Baby, Think It Over, and, Raining In My Heart. Probably some others they slipped in, too.
McCartney was so devoted to Holly's work that he bought the copyrights to his catalogue.

Even if they did "fool around" with Blue Suede Shoes, that was originally a Carl Perkins tune, remember? And, we all know how much of a Perkins' fan George is! Of course, Elvis had the bigger hit with "Shoes" and it will always be associated with The King. In fact, it wasn't until the '60s that I found out Carl Perkins had anything to do with that song, much less having had recorded it. jtal, I know this is irrelevant to this site, but please forgive me if I ask how you're enjoying the post-season?

Alas, indeed, my jtal. You and I are not in the same stadium of mind, I'm afraid. I do hope we've established enough respect for each other to overcome this difference of opinion and move on. I shall not bring up the subject again, which I'm sure will please anyone reading this! As for "straightening you out" on Holly covers and Carl Perkins: those facts just came to my mind instantly, for some unknown reason. Amazing! Sometimes the old brain still functions!

I had a feeling (a feeling deep inside, oh yeah) that we were in different stadiums but I'm not one of those who has to disagree with the other. Besides, you're an original fan. I wonder if the Beatles go to ballgames. (had to include a Beatles reference) I also think that Paul would be able to hit the ball the farthest out of the four.
