View Full Version : Beatle worthy solo songs

What songs from the Beatles' solo careers would have made great Beatle songs? Consider quality of song and style.
Maybe I'm Amazed, No More Lonely Nights, and My Love were mentioned in the Wings post.

This is pretty complex.
I've often wondered how solo songs would've sounded if the group had recorded them.
Beatle-worthy. . .not sure about that. Every solo song was influenced by their time in beatles, in one way or another.
There are exceptional solo songs, though.
Also, I think if the group had recorded the solo songs, they would have sounded a lot different. I kind of like the way they already sound.
For an example, take Imagine. . .you couldn't touch it. You couldn't change it, add anything to it.

I totally agree, LenMac! "Imagine" stands alone as the greatest song ever recorded. http://www.beatlelinks.net/ubb/smilies/images/icons/grin.gif

Jealous Guy comes a close second though.
Cold Turkey could have been a good song for the Beatles. Just imagine George playing those powerful chords at the beginning!

Cold Turkey was considered to be recorded by the beatles, actually. During the making of Abbey Road.

Cold Turkey is a truly powerful song though. It's one of my favourite Lennon songs. But it doesn't match Imagine or Jealous Guy though. They can't be touched in any way.

All things Must Pass, although on a demo/anthology, never made it on the Beatles but was great on George's album of the same name. This might have been a good Beatle song. Ringo's drums would have added a lot.

I believe that hardly any solo song after 1970 would have sounded similar when being recorded by The Beatles.
There would always have been an influence from another member, like Paul trying to change or adjust John's songs or George's songs or any other way around.
See what already happened on Let it Be.
The White Album already was close to a combination of solo songs.

As far as what Ringo could have added to the song All Things Must Pass by George Harrison I would say not much than what was already there. I say this because I believe that Ringo already played the drums on this song. The credits don't say which songs that he played on but the sound of the drums is a lot like Ringo. I believe it is him

Wait a minute. Isn't Clapton playing guitar on Cold Turkey? It sure sounds like him. And The Beatles did record complete versions of "All Things Must Pass" during the 'Get Back' sessions in January 1969. They sound very good to me, and I it would have made a great Beatles song. In fact, you can hear each Beatle trying out a lot of songs during these sessions that ended up on their first few solo albums. Like "Let It Down," "Give Me Some Truth," "Back Seat Of My Car," and many more. It's really amazing to hear how much they had written at this point.

Unless he just played it live - I'm sure it was him on the proper recording though.

"Whatever Gets You Through The Night" is Beatles-worthy, in my opinion. I would love it if Paul were singing in harmony with John. In any event, this is one of the all-time favorite Lennon songs in our house!

The vast majority of their early solo songs were written before they broke up. Chances are that somewhere, in a hidden place, you'd might be able to find demos with the them together.
If a place does exist, the owner of those recordings could make a fortune.

Just Like Starting Over could have been a good song for the Beatles.
Did you know that Ringo's album, 'Ringo' was the closest thing to a Beatles reunion in the 70's since the breakup. All the other Beatles played on it. I got a copy.

Ringo I still consider within the top 5 solo albums.
I'm the greatest is awsome and actually the line-up for this recording (John, George, Ringo, Klaus) was the start of rumours that the Beatles would continue with Klaus on Bass.
I have the Daily Mirror article here, March 20, 1971 'The New Beatle', the Beatles are back.
Photograph is a great song, but I doubt if this would have sounded close to the same when recorded by the Beatles. All these accoustic guitars and the harmonies, just Harrison producing style, which would not have been agreed probably by John and Paul.

Ringo's LP "Ringo" is a great work by anyones standards. My favorite Ringo solo song is on this album, "Six O'Clock". It was written by Paul and Linda, and they supplied the backing vocals for it.
"Im The Greatest", the first track, written by John, summarizes what the Beatles accomplished over the years. Ringo singing; "...Yes, my name is Billy Shears, you know it has been for so many years..." always brings a smile to my face.
"Photograph", written by Ringo and George, was the most successful track from this album. It brings back a lot of memories.

it most definitely would not have sounded the same. It would have had the Beatle touch and been a different song. Maybe not better or worse, but Beatlesque.

I think songs like What ever get's you through the night, Live and Let die, The No No song and I got my mind set on you would have made really good Beatle songs

"I Got My Mind Set On You" does have a little touch of Beatlesque. It probably would have been another #1 for the group.

I think it is the closest you can get, "I Got My Mind Set on You" had the combo of George and Ringo, it's the closest they got to getting back together, well unless you want to count "Real Love" and "Free as a Bird"

But How Do You Sleep was about Paul. He might not have appreciated it.
I think George played on that so you have half the Beatles. George probably enjoyed it at the time.

Imagine, as great as it is as a Lennon song, could have been a great Beatle song as well. A George lead (like Let It Be ), Paul harmonies in the chorus/refrain ("Imagine all the people....". I think Ringo might be playing on it already.

That's a good song too, very rough and throaty.
Tickle my goatie. . . .not that I have one - I don't believe in it. Although, I milked a goat once. It never walked again. Neither did I. Jeez, the summer of 86', I was 5, the weather was beautiful, and I fell in love with a goat. Oh how my heart yearns for her sweet, sweet lovin'. And her precious milk.
Where were we?
Oh...I'd love to learn how to play the piano. I can play the guitar, but I'd like to woo people with my piano renditions of Jealous Guy and Imagine, and Hey Jude, etc.

Why not, here are the lyrics to complete When We Was Fab;
Back then long time ago when grass was green
Woke up in a daze
Arrived like stangers in the night
Fab - long time ago when we was fab
Fab - back when income tax was all we had
Caresses fleeced you in the morning light
Casualties at dawn
And we did it all
Fab - long time ago when we was fab
Fab - you are my world you are my only love
And while you're in this world
The fuzz gonna come and claim you
But you mo better wise
When the buzz gonna come and take you away
Take you away
Take you away
The microscopes that magnified the tears
Studied warts and all
Still the life flows on and on
Fab - long time ago when we was fab
Fab - but It's All Over Now Baby Blue
Fab - long time ago when we was fab
Fab - like this pullover you sent to me
Fab
And You've Really Got A Hold Me
fab - long time ago when we was fab

In a 1988 interview, George said
Well Basically I just thought it would be nice to write a song with the sound of the 1967/1968 period. It was just a whim.
Especially since at that time I was with Jeff Lynne in Australia and I know how much he likes the old stuff.
It didn't have any lyrics at the time so it was tentatively called Aussie Fab, because it was reminiscent of the Fabs and written in Australia.
