Do you ever wish you'd lived through the sixties? Maybe that sounds weird, but I seriously think I was born at the wrong time. Everything I love is so...so...hm...SIXTIES-ish. Uh yeah. What I mean is, obviously my INCREDIBLE love for The Beatles. Woodstock. The Who, Doors, CrosbyStillsNash&Young, Byrds, CCR, Mamas and the Papas, etc. And I just loved the whole hippie movement type deal. The whole thing with young people actually thinking they could make a difference- awesome. I watched the History of Rock 'n Roll on VH1 today and I got kind of emotional thinking what it would have been like to live back then.

I've also heard that it was NOT great and that it was a horrible time. The war and stuff. I don't know, I just feel kind of out of place sometimes. It seems like NObody my age (19) likes ANYthing that I like. Not even remotely.

Anyway, that's about it. Just wanted to know if there was anyone out there that felt that way. If you're still reading- THANK YOU! http://www.beatlelinks.net/ubb/smilies/images/icons/smile.gif

In my situation, I'm stuck in the '60s. Having already lived through it, I tend to be biased with that time period. The '60s were a time that can be repeated, but never replaced. If it had not been for the Beatles, who knows how the '60s would have turned out.

GenFan: As far as the music of the '60s is concerned, it would be mighty hard to beat. As for the "hippie" movement, well, there is a very dark side to that which sometimes tends to be overlooked. Drugs ruined (and cost) a lot of lives. Many kids were just hypocrites wanting to get high and free-load their way through life. I hate to sound cynical, but I lived through it all, despising drugs and the damage they caused ( which was considerable), and I'd be less than honest in not telling you this. BTW, I'm from N.Y., so perhaps I witnessed more than others. What carried me through was the music. I owe a lot to the Beatles for always providing a "safe haven" for me, even though they themselves "indulged" and "experimented". Their music and movies were comforts I could always rely on, no matter what problems I had. So, you see, 4thGenFan, no era is without flaws, but great artistry will always endure!

I know how you feel. I know I was born 30 years too late. How I wish I could go back to Liverpool 1960 and watch the Beatles play in the Cavern, and then get all of their rare records as they come out. http://www.beatlelinks.net/ubb/smilies/images/icons/wink.gif My favourite musical era was the 60's and always will be. The moden 'music' today is just crap.

Peoples' naivety really bothers me when they say things like "I should have been born in the 60's" - WHY? So you could have been 3 when She Loves You came out? Think again.

Imagine turning on your black and white television 8 pm on Sunday night 1964 and the Beatles come on the Ed Sullivan show. The sheer newness and attitude of the sound and picture would have you spellbound. Your parents would look on with curiosity but they wouldn't understand. It was for you. That was part of growing up in the 60's.

I often feel that way to. Yeah tons of really bad things happened in the sixties, but if I could just go back for the music and such it would be great.

Actually LenMc, I never said I wish I had ben born in the sixties. I said I wanted to be around in the 60's. I always say that I should have been born in the 50's.

Yep, I to know how you feel. I'm 11, and Just about everything I like is 60's, or has to do with the 60's. I always think about how fun it would be to go back in time, and really live in the 60's. Yeah, times were tough, but I still would like to live then. I always wear bell-bottom jeans, I LOVE the music, and I love to think about what it was like. I think it would be sooooo fun to go to the Cavern Club, and here The Beatles play, or go to Woodstock, or something. But, I'm dreaming..........

Added to what you said, jtal, we who lived through Beatlemania know what it was like to wait for new records to be released. Our albums have a chronological order to them. We didn't get the entire collection in one great lump. It was, indeed, good to be in the right place at the right time!

Yep, there was nothing like a new Beatles record setting a new trend in popular music.
But you know, young fans, that life wasn't all about the Beatles. Sure they were the great cultural leaders to many people, but we had to go through real life anxieties just like you.
Man, we had to get up to change the channel on the tv.

The Beatle experience would have been wonderful to witness but all the Beatle's music in the world couldn't get me to go back to a time when all my boyfriends would be getting blown apart in Vietnam....they were an incredibly welcome escape and the voice of an era.My mom still cries about the freinds and family that were lost....I'm happy knowing I was born during the summer of love. Nice place to visit, but you wouldn't want to live there,I reckon.

As jtal909 stated above, I did catched the Ed Sullivan show on TV back in '64 watching the Beatles for the first time while living in Phoenix, Arizona. My parents and I watched in amazement when John, Paul, George, and Ringo performed with perfection. A memory I will never forget.

Nor will I, Glen. I remember sitting on the living room floor watching in awe. The next day at school, that was all we talked about.

If anyone's on crack it's probably me! http://www.beatlelinks.net/ubb/smilies/images/icons/smile.gif

What I mean is, I think it would've been cool to be able to live the sixties but think, you'd be sorta old by now, and it would just be memories..

Anyway I know this sounds amazingly weird but when I think of the sixties it's a pretty "been there done that" feeling.. I'm sixteen, and partly because of the religion I've been brought up in I believe in reincarnation.. which leads me to believe I probably was there because of the way I feel and the way I argue in US History.

I know it sounds bizarre but when I watch sixties stuff on tv it's like old memories. I remember listening to the Srg. Pepper LP this time around and it really didn't seem new to me, I knew the music.. could be subconcious remembering radio music, could it be I was a freaking hippi, or could it just be the magic of the Beatles music?

Who knows? This really isn't an inteligant post is it? Sorry guys, not feeling well physically, mentally, or emotionaly so I'm psycho babbling..

Until next time,
Jeni

It was always a great treat when a new Beatle record came out. You couldn't wait to ge it home form the store to listen. the one that most amazed me was Rubber Soul, by the new way it sounded. Of course, Sgt Pepper was a great stride, but after Rubber Soul, you knew a new direction was happening.

The reason I'm jealous of Baby Boomer's is because they were able to experience this huge revolution (and not just in music) A revolution that has since become the norm to my generation. Grr, that really gets to me sometimes. Over the summer I spent a good week being depressed about that - I know that 's kind of pathetic, but c'est la vie..
