It was two years ago today that Virgin Publishing released the "1,000 Greatest Albums of All Time," on which the Beatles took four out of the top five spots:
1. "Revolver"
2. "Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band"
3. "The Beatles" (known as the White Album)
5. "Abbey Road"
What is everyone's comments on this?

I thought that it was great that the Beatles had four of the top five. However, I would have placed Rubber Soul at the top of the list.

I agree. Rubber Soul was the best album they released in my opinion. There's music there for nearly all kinds of emotion.

I don't think you can say which album is their best album. At the end of the day, it just comes down to personal preference.

I am a bit surprised that Revolver took #1, actually. I'd expect it to be White or Peppers. I assume that all of their albums appeared in the top 1,000 at some point, though.

I couldn't pick a best either, Lenmac. I do think Rubber Soul is significant as it was the first to exhibit the departure from traditional pop music and add textures and themes.

Unfortunately, Nirvana's "Nevermind" nabbed the fourth spot, breaking the Fab Four's dominance.
Rubber Soul should have made the Top Five as well. Of couse, that's just my opinion.

You see, the trouble with Beatles Albums is that each one broke new ground at the time of it's issue, so it is impossible to pick the best one, I agree that Rubber Soul should have been in the top 5 also, but I could'nt possibly distinguish the top 5, so would say all 5 would take joint 1st place!

I think Revolver was the best, burt my personal all-time #1 is Pet Sounds, with Revolver just a very close second.

'Help!' is a great album. It never gets a mention on all these so called 'greatest albums ever' lists.
It has great songs on it, 'Help!', Ticket To Ride,' and 'Yesterday' - to name but a few.

I always find it difficult to name an alltime favorite album.
I consider 1965/1966 a very big change.
First there was Help. They showed up with additional instruments. The organ was used a lot and the pedal. They changed from a guitar band to musicians who tried to change the regular 3 guitars + drums act.
Then Rubber Soul; again becoming more a studio band and changing the love songs to a more sofisticated style of writing, influenced by others like Bob Dylan. They improved. In My Life, nowhere man, the're no she loves you's anymore.
Revolver, the Masterpiece. Drugs all over the place, but again improving a lot as studio musicians.
Abbey Road is still massive looking at harmony, instrumental skills, everything.
It's hard to express what one considers as the best song and the best album.
On the release date of the book, a Dutch radio station played 24 hours Beatles and I was able to hear a lot of it and then up comes Day Tripper, great, She Loves You, one of the best, The Night Before, classic album song, And Your Bird Can Sing, and play guitar.
So, as said, always hard to pick the best. Changes from day to day for me.

i'd say for variety of content and sheer mass of great songs ... *gasp* white would have to take it. i really enjoy the painful introspection of the "dylan period." but as for my favorite album, it's a toss up between the self-titled effort and "revolver."

That list sounds a bit crooked. 1,000 best albums? Who would actually read that in its entirity? After about 150, who really cares?

Penny, I'm always interested in how music is judged and polled. Of course, I skim through the entire lists looking to see where the Beatles are listed. http://www.beatlelinks.net/ubb/smilies/images/icons/wink.gif
