View Full Version : The best of George and Ringo

As we all know, John and Paul wrote and sang most of the Beatle's songs. Which of the few that George and Ringo wrote or sang are your favorites? I like Taxman, of course by George. I also like him singing Something, however, I don't know if he wrote that.
What are some songs, if any, that Ringo wrote? I know he sang some, including Octopus's Garden and With a little help from my friends. I don't really know any that he wrote, though.

I absolutely love Don't Pass Me By by Ringo.
And I love While My Guitar Gently Weeps, especially the version on the Anthology CD's. Also I love the hypnotic Within You Without You.

George did write "Something" and it's a good song. Another one of his, also from Abbey Road, is "Here Comes The Sun". George wrote the latter while walking through Eric Clapton's garden at sunrise.
As for Ringo, though he didn't write it, "With A Little Help From My Friends" is one that I really like. Of the songs he wrote, I would go with "Octopus's Garden". It kind of reminds me of "Yellow Submarine".

the few songs they did sing, i love. I think George rocks on Roll Over Beethoven and While My Guitar Gently Sleeps. On this album I have called Raw Energy, he sings Take Good Care Of My Baby. It's a great song!
Ringo is awesome in With A Little Help From My Friends and Yellow Submarine.

The 2 Ringo songs that appeared on Beatles albums are Don't Pass Me By and Octopus's Garden.
Did anyone know that George sang, Everybody's trying To Be My Baby?
If I Needed Someone was a great song by Mr. Harrison, and so was While My Guitar Gently Weeps. Octopus's Garden was the best Ringo song, but DPMB was also very good.

The All Things Must Pass songs, by George, are a collective masterpiece. I highly recommend it for those of you not familiar with it.

Hey, this/that, the song you're thinking of is "Honey Don't", sung by Ringo. The line is, "Ah, rock on George, for Ringo one time."

My choice for Ringo is easier, I think. His best written song is Octopus's Garden, but out of those he sings, I like I Want to be Your Man. From George, I have a few more. Among the top are Here Comes the Sun, Taxman, While my Guitair Gently Weeps, and Piggies. I am not big on his sitar songs, which there really were too many of!

They interestingly enough chose Ringo to sing "Goodnight" (White Album). It is fabulous.

Penny, George's first song he played sitar on was "Norwegian Wood". That is a good song. Another one with sitar is "Love You To", which was his first Indian-flavored composition.

I do like some of the sitar songs, I just think that too many were made. I think that a few sitar songs are okay, but George really took it over the top.

I really like George's music especially All things must Pass as one of my favs of all time, but he did kind of "screw up" some Beatle albums with his insistance of turning us on to sitar music. Imagine if Sgt Pepper had instead of Within You Without You, another Lovely Rita, or if Revolver had instead of Love You To, another Eleanor Rigby......?
Imagine all the people.....

Most of the George and Ringo albums are not in print but at least some of George are up for re-release.
I don't agree on the sitar references here. Ofcourse you must like it, but it gave a new dimension to pop-music whereas other artists got to study on it too.
The Inner Light is one of my favorites by George in his band period. If you don't like a sitar, listen to the melody.
On various polls, All Things Must Pass come forward as the most favorite solo album by any Beatle.
Well you can see from my name that I am a George fan (as #1 of the four).

All Things Must Pass must be a culmination of all the songs George had been writing that didn' fit into John and Paul's notion of being Beatle songs.
Many artists' first album are their best as it is a culmination of years of writing and the best songs get on it. After that, it might be a years worth of writing, coming up with a few gems.

Some of the songs on All Things Must Pass indeed date back from the Beatles period, but bear in mind, that that period had in fact just ended.
Also, George kept some songs which he never played with the Beatles before.

I was wondering when someone would mention 'The Inner Light', which is a true masterpiece.
'While My Guitar Gently Weeps' 'Something' 'Taxman' 'Piggies' 'Here Comes The Sun' all show that George's talent was at the very least equal to, if not as prolific as, John & Paul's, and he has always been underrated. His solo albums are well worht a visit, and are plentiful and cheaply found in second hand record stores, and memorabilia stands at Beatlefests. Indulge!

Is anyone familiar with George's "33 1/3" album? There's a track on it entitled "Beautiful Girl" and I think it's great! He also does a terrific version of the old standard "True Love" which is very easy on the ear.

I think easy on the ears is like 'easy listening'.
Beautiful Girl is indeed a great tune and I find Learning How To Love You one of his best ever, also when you talk about guitar solo's. Listen to the accoustic guitar hereon.
Most of the time when on Boards a favorite list is to be produced of George songs in Beatle days or thereafter, I have The Inner Light in it.

Rita, my sweet, George recorded a long-playing album called "33 1/3" when he was just that age: 33 & 1/3 years old. Clever, eh? I have no doubt you knew that easy on the ear meant pleasant to listen to, didn't you? "True Love" is an old Cole Porter tune sung by Bing Crosby & Grace Kelly in the movie HIGH SOCIETY. George's version is terrific. If you can find this album anywhere, it's worth buying, as it's terrific to listen to. The very sarcastic "This Song" was a moderate chart success, but I'm sure 'kat, Glenn, or one of our resident experts can tell us just how high it climbed. P.S. Good luck in school this term, Lovely!

This song ofcourse was about the My Sweet Lord lawsuit decision and had a nice video to go along, which was even a rather close copy of how the court case actually went.
From what I know, it went fast into the charts but at Billboard stayed on 25, Cash Box on 28 and Record World on 33.

George's idea was to release this album June 25, 1976, at which time he would be 33 & 1/3 years of age. However, he developed a case of hepatitis and was unable to finish it in time. The LP was released Nov. 19, 1976 (UK) and Nov. 24, 1976 (US).
