Has anyone seen on MTV the Rolling Stone top 100 songs of all time? Yesterday is number one, but the attraction is that they interviewed Paul and show video of him commenting on various songs. One was John's Imagine (somewhere around #12). Paul said it was one of John's best songs and that he still enjoys watching video of it.

No, I didn't see that, but it sounds pretty cool! Did you know that Paul is the richest rock musican, and George is #10!!!! That is sooooooo cool! http://www.beatlelinks.net/ubb/smilies/images/icons/grin.gif

I am familiar with the list, and think that most of it is absolute BS. Elvis hasn't even gotten a spot, and #10 is inhibited by The Backstreet Boys. There are only three Beatles songs in the Top 100. Does this seem strange to anyone else?

Dec 01, 2000, 07:20 PM
It is very strange to me. The Beatles should have at least 10 songs, if not more, on the list. As far as solo hits are concerned, each should have a couple on the top 30.

We have reached an all time low if the Backstreet Boys are number 10. I am extremely concerned that Rolling Stone was perhaps serious about that. Are you guys sure this wasn't a comedy show?

It is a pretty bogus list but is worth watching to see and here Paul's comments. It is a recent interview.

I agree with the Kat. Chances are that the writers wanted to include variety and so wrote a list to please a wide span of people...but in that case, the title of the article / TV Show should have been changed. Other Top 100 spot holders include: Britney Spears (25), and N Sync (55)It's a sick world. http://www.beatlelinks.net/ubb/smilies/images/icons/wink.gif Some others are Paul McCartney - Maybe I'm Amazed (52) Bob Dylan - Like a Rolling Stone, Rolling Stones - I can't Get No Satisfaction (2). If you guys want to see the entire list, I found it at Rollingstone.com. http://www.beatlelinks.net/ubb/smilies/images/icons/smile.gif

The BBC did a similar poll last year just before the millenium, and the Beatles/solo had 20 songs in the top 100 !Imagine was no3 and.......Yesterday was yet again voted the top song of the millenium. It also made the top 10 in the POETRY chart, with I Am The Walrus and Imagine ahead of it.

Ahhh.....the lyrics to I Am The Walrus...WONDEROUS!!!!!!!

The Backstreet Boys at number 10 was a joke. And the fact that one of the people that commented said 'everyone remembers it still' I was thinking well duh the song is only a year old and its still played on top 40 stations. I think all of the songs on the top 100 should have been atleast 10 years old couse if its still remembered as great after 10 years it really is on the top. But of course they had to keep the little girls and boys that think Nirvana invented rock n' roll happy by putting alot of year old songs on the list.

Lovely Rita, could you BE any cooler?? You hit the nail right on the head with your comments. I COMPLETELY agree that Yesterday wouldn't have been number one if Paul wasn't alive. If John were alive, I'm almost CERTAIN that Imagine would've been number one. And I could only HOPE that John would NEVER, EVER, EVER stoop so low as to go on MTV with Carson Daly. Who hired that guy, anyway?? Talk about no personality! I watched about two minutes of the Top 100 and then had to turn it off because he was so pathetic!! *sigh*...the world is so wrong. With Backdoor Boys and Titney Spears in the Top 50, it's almost too much to bear.

Well, I am angered at the thought that the Backstreet Boys would be #10 on the countdown, but you do have to remember that it IS MTV. Would you expect anything else from them? Also, in my opinion, I don't think Yesterday comes close to being as great as Imagine. However, you have to remember that Paul is alive and was a guest on the MTV count down. I have a feeling that if Paul had not been a guest on the count down, then his song would not have been #1. Do you get what I'm saying? I think Imagine is better, but John is not alive to promote his song. Not that I think he would appear on a stupid MTV countdown if he was alive. Just seeing Paul and Carson Daley standing together made me cringe, let alone seeing Carson and John! No matter what those countdowns say, we know the Beatles rule over all!

What really irritated me was that Nirvana's "Smells Like Teen Spirit" was something like #3.. I don't mean to insult anyone who digs Nirvana but .. (please don't hurt me for this extremely obvious and extremely unavoidable) "they're dead grotty.. grotesque" (thanks there, George..)

I'll take Oasis over Nirvana anyday

As wonderful as that quote of George's is, I don't think that it can accurately be applied to Nirvana. Whether you like them or not doesn't take away from the fact that Kurt Cobain was a prolific song writer.
Such talent can hardly be described as grotty.

That's rubbish.
Imagine didn't get to number one when John was alive.
The song is a great song but it is also representative of John himself, and is a source of remembrance. That's why it makes you sad when you hear it. If he was still alive it wouldn't be a sad song at all.
If Paul had died, Yesterday would be representative of his death and would therefore become a song that makes you sad when you hear it.

I think that many of you misunderstood Rita's message. She wasn't saying that people like Yesterday solely because Paul is alive. She was saying that because Paul is alive and made a guest appearance on the show, then of course he would take to top spot - it is a clever publicity stunt. If, by chance, Yesterday ranked #15, then Paul's appearence wouldn't have been as important.

jtal909
Dec 21, 2000, 06:39 PM

That's the point. The show arrived to South America (with subtitles) last week, so I just saw it. "Yesterday" won because of THAT reason. Not because it was the best song, but because it was maybe the most important in pop history.

But that Top 100 list shouldn't be taken so seriously. For instance, Fleetwood Mac's exceptional song "Go Your Own Way" was on #25, while Britney Spears' "Baby One More Time" was next on #24!!! http://www.beatlelinks.net/ubb/smilies/images/icons/shocked.gif (Just to recall another joke they made to us). Also, only three Beatle songs and none written by George??? I think even Michael Jackson and Madonna had more songs on the list.

Please, don't make us laugh. http://www.beatlelinks.net/ubb/smilies/images/icons/wink.gif We know what's the best of the 20th Century, and no-one (neither MTV, nor Rolling Stones) needs to tell us about it. http://www.beatlelinks.net/ubb/smilies/images/icons/wink.gif

Imagine never became a #1 while John was alive, because John was alive. Folks could take their time gathering his stuff, there was plenty of time. It was only after his death that his catalog soared through the roof. It deserved to - and we are a churlish bunch of folks who refuse to appreciate what we have while we still have it.

Prior to his death, his work was available to us as it always is for any artist - when he made it available. After his death, we were forced to acknowledge we had plumbed that well dry, and if we wanted to make sure we heard all of his message, we'd better get off our duff's and get to the store. While production of his stuff was upped a bit (hey, everyone has to make a buck), it was the fans asking for any albums they'd missed previously that forced the industry to crank it up.

Imagine is a far better song to me than Yesterday.

But if the roles had been reversed, Imagine wouldn't even have been #1 on the MTV show, because I have every belief the best was yet to be with John, and he would have recorded something that would even outshine Imagine. On the other hand, maybe it would have - none of Paul's post-Beatle work has outclassed Yesterday yet.
