What a wonderful world by Louis Armstrong. Some of the most beautiful lyrics ever written.
Somewhere over the rainbow. I cannot help but swell up when I see this come on while watching the Wizard of Oz. What a powerful yet sweet song. Pure magic in every way.Of course Judy Garlands vocals are heavenly.

When I read the title I was thinking about that song!! I love it, it always makes me cry, it's so beautiful.
Then there are a few more songs that really make me cry:
- I do by Paul McCartney
- Good Ridance by Green Day
- As Time Goes By, the main theme of the movie Casablanca

the music from the movie "Out Of Africa" gets to me
I also cry with the music arranged by John Williams for the movie "Somewhere In Time" w/Christopher Reeves & Jane Seymour, a real tear jerker both movie & music, the music is all arranged around one of Rachmaninoff's masterpieces...

There are a few with different reasons for it, but one is My Boy by Elvis.
Do one event ones count too? When I was at Paul's concert last year, during "Something" ...it was just so emotional to see him do that on the ukelele with George's pictures going by behind him..

The wrong child by REM
I've watched the children come and go
A late long march into spring
I sit and watch those children
Jump in the tall grass
leap the sprinklers
walk in the ground
Bycicle clothespin spokes
The sound the smell of swing set hands
I will try to sing a happy song
I'll try to make a happy game to play
Come play with me I wispered to my new found friend
Tell me whats its like to go outside
Ive never been
Tell me what its like just to go outside
Ive never been
And I never will
Im not supposed to be like this
Im not supposed to be like this
But its ok
Hey those kids are looking at me
I told my friend myself
Those kids are looking at me
Theyre laughing and theyre running over here
Theyre laughing and running over here!
What do I do?
What can I do?
What should I do?
What can I say?
Ill say Im not supposed to be like this
Lets try to find a happy game
Lets try to find a happy game
Im not supposed to be like this
But its ok

Heres one of the saddest songs ever written but its lyrics are so important I dedicate it to the Troops in Iraq and Afghanistan its about post tramatic stress syndrome a solder goes through (written during Veitnam btw)
SAM STONE by John Prine
Sam Stone came home
To his family and wife
After serving in the conflict overseas
And that time that he served
Had shattered all his nerves
And even left a little shrapnel in his knee
But the morphine eased the pain
And the grass grew round his brain
And gave him all the confidence he lacked
With a purple heart and a monkey on his back
Theres a hole on daddys arm where all the money goes
Jesus Christ died for nothing I suppose
Little pitchers have big ears
Dont stop to count the years
Sweet songs never last that long
On broken radios
mmmm
Sam Stones welcome home
Didnt last that long
He went to work when he spent his last dime
And Sammy took to stealing
When he got that empty feeling
For a hundred dollar habit with out overtime
And gold rolled through his veins
Like a thousand railroad trains
ANd eased his mind for hours that he chose
While the kids ran around wearing other peoples clothes
Sam Stone was alone when he popped his last balloon
Climing walls while sitting in a chair
Well he played his last request
And the room just smelled like death
With a overdose hovering in the air
But life has lost its fun
And there was nothing to be done
But trade his house that he bought on his G I bill
For a flag draped casket on the local heros hill
Theres a hole on daddys arm where all the money goes
Jesus Christ died for nothing I suppose
Little Pitures have big ears
Dont stop to count the years
Sweet songs dont last to long
On Broken radios
mmmmm

when the tigers broke free ..roger waters
It was just before dawn
One miserable morning in black 'forty four.
When the forward commander
Was told to sit tight
When he asked that his men be withdrawn.
And the Generals gave thanks
As the other ranks held back
The enemy tanks for a while.
And the Anzio bridgehead
Was held for the price
Of a few hundred ordinary lives.
And kind old King George
Sent Mother a note
When he heard that father was gone.
It was, I recall,
In the form of a scroll,
With gold leaf and all.
And I found it one day
In a drawer of old photographs, hidden away.
And my eyes still grow damp to remember
His Majesty signed
With his own rubber stamp.
It was dark all around.
There was frost in the ground
When the tigers broke free.
And no one survived
From the Royal Fusiliers Company C.
They were all left behind,
Most of them dead,
The rest of them dying.
And that's how the High Command
Took my daddy from me.

Other than Christian songs, there aren't many that have made me out and out cry.... I almost cried when Paul sang "Here Today" when I saw him in concert for the first time; "My Love" has almost made me cry after Linda died.... but the song that made me out and out cry for totally different reasons was "It's All Too Much" I was driving one summer day and had it blasting, and just had this feeling of being soooo happy that I cried. I still remember that moment very well even tho it was probably at least 6 years ago. Just driiving in my car by myself; so thankful for everything.

Only three bands have such power over me: The Beatles, T. Rex, and The Kinks. I think most of the time I'm crying because I'm just so happy, and overwhelmed by beauty. Specifically, I'd say Electric Warrior has always moved me greatly, especially "Mambo Sun" and "Jeepster". "Ride A White Swan" is too beautiful . . . And then Village Green Preservation Society by The Kinks . . . so much emotion every time . . .

"For the Battered" by Government Cheese and Tommy Womack (song about an abused woman)
Here are the lyrics--read them to the last line.
I once knew a girl who didn't have it all together
She thought she was fat, but she was light as a feather
She thought she was dumb, but she was no fool
Her man used to beat her, and that ain't cool
She really loved him; nobody knew why
The way he treated her would make a dead man cry
Domestic violence night after night
Her friends going on saying, "This ain't right!"
"He's just mad he can't get a job," she'd say
But you can't get 'em sitting on your butt all day
She paid for the trailer in the trailer park
Working at a Minit Mart walking home after dark
While her man's out running with his worthless friends
Life got to be a bunch of pain that never ends
And one night he came home, a drunken eyesore
He called her a bitch; he called her a whore
He hit her harder than he'd ever hit her before
The poor girl just couldn't take it anymore
So she went to a pusher and bought 30 Vs
Went to a bar and got a Long Island Tea
Took 'em all sitting in the corner all alone
Chilled for a second, and sank like a stone
And the place freaked out; an ambulance came
Some people there knew her--they knew who to blame
A posse went and found where her old man was
And said, "Excuse me--your ass is ours!"
And they took him for a ride; I don't know where
Gave him a lecture and made him aware
Of how to treat a woman whose heart is pure
To ram it all home and to make damn sure
He never ever tried to hit a woman again
They took a ball-peen hammer and busted up his hands
Now back to the woman--she's very much alive
They pumped out her stomach and when she revived
Her friends told her how her old man got his
And she disapproved--that's the kind of person she is
Disapproving, yeah, but like I said she's no fool
She dumped that sucker and went back to school
And got a new job and moved out of state
And got a new man who just can't wait
To treat her every night like a good man should
She never knew life could ever get this good
So let this be a lesson to all the men out there
Don't punch her in the belly--don't yank her by the hair
Karma's real...it's no bullshit
Don't make a bad case and get a face full of it
She oughta be held; she oughta be kissed
So give her your heart and NEVER YOUR FIST

Jerome J. Garcia / Robert C. Hunter
Fare you well, my honey, fare you well my only true one.
All the birds that were singing are flown, except you alone.
Going to leave this Brokedown Palace,
On my hand and knees, I will roll, roll, roll.
Make myself a bed, by the waterside I will lay my head
Listen to the river sing sweet songs, to rock my soul
River going to take me, since me sweet and sleepy,
Sing me sweet and sleepy
All the way back home
It’s a far gone lullaby, sung many years ago.
Mama, mama many worlds I’ve come
Since I first left home.
Goin’ home, goin’ home, by the waterside I will rest my bones,
Listen to the river sing sweet songs, to rock my soul
Going to plant a weeping willow,
On the bank’s edge it will grow, grow, grow.
Sing a lullaby beside the water,
You know lovers come and go, but the river roll, roll, roll.
Fare you well, fare you well,
I love you more than words can tell,
Listen to the river sing sweet songs,
To rock my soul.

Neil Young's "City Of Brotherly Love" from the "Philadelphia" movie is a real weller-upper!
But in that case, it's a combination of the film's closing "home movie" scenes, together with the song, that makes it so affecting.

Another song on the abuse subject is Suzanne Vega's Luka.
My name is Luka
I live on the second floor
I live upstairs from you
Yes I think you've seen me before
If you hear something late at night
Some kind of trouble. some kind of fight
Just don't ask me what it was
Just don't ask me what it was
Just don't ask me what it was
I think it's because I'm clumsy
I try not to talk too loud
Maybe it's because I'm crazy
I try not to act too proud
They only hit until you cry
And after that you don't ask why
You just don't argue anymore
You just don't argue anymore
You just don't argue anymore
Yes I think I'm okay
I walked into the door again
Well, if you ask that's what I'll say
And it's not your business anyway
I guess I'd like to be alone
With nothing broken, nothing thrown
Just don't ask me how I am

Jungleland by Bruce Springsteen. Especially the end of the song. Oh my god!
Somewhere Over The Rainbow used to make me cry hard when I was a kid. I still get kind of teary-eyed with that one as well.

If Christmas Shoes had a better singer singing it, it may do something to me..... some singers are not capable of that, though.

One of my best and dearest friends passed away from cancer 18months ago, and when she was going through her hell towards the end, I was playing some Jackson Browne and started just weeping to "Sky Blue And Black".
"And the Heavens were rolling
like a wheel on a track,
And our sky was unfolding
and it will never fold back."
-that verse just slayed me. Still does.

I'll Be There by Michael makes me cry every time. Saw "This Is It" movie 16 times in the theater and cried buckets all sixteen times. The words are perfect, just perfect. And anyone who ever thought Michael was anything less than incredibly handsome needs to check themselves and watch that song from the movie.
Someone's uploaded the song from the movie... but they kind of sing along. :) Cute though.

And here is a beautiful video version (from a Pepsi publicity) ... don't know if this is the intention, but to me, it is Michael learning to find the love he always needed, within his own heart.

I can't even read the words without crying! Love you Michael! :heart2:
You and I must make a pact
We must bring salvation back
Where there is love, I'll be there
I'll reach out my hand to you,
I'll have faith in all you do
Just call my name and I'll be there
Chorus:
And oh - I'll be there to comfort you,
Build my world of dreams around you
I'm so glad that I found you
I'll be there with a love that's strong
I'll be your strength, I'll keep holding on
Yes I will, yes I will
Let me fill your heart with joy and laughter
Togetherness, well that's all I'm after
Whenever you need me, I'll be there
I'll be there to protect you
With an unselfish love I respect you
Just call my name and I'll be there
(Chorus)
If you should ever find someone new
I know he'd better be good to you
'Cos if he doesn't, I'll be there
Don't you know, baby, yeah yeah
I'll be there, I'll be there, just call my name, I'll be there
(Just look over your shoulders, honey - ooh)
I'll be there, I'll be there, whenever you need me, I'll be there
Don't you know, baby, yeah yeah
I'll be there, I'll be there, just call my name, I'll be there...

Oh, me too, CB. And at the end of the movie, when Dorothy decides that if she goes looking for her heart's desire, she won't look any further than her own back yard....

Here's a version of 'Over the Rainbow' that will put a lump in your throat. Absolutely beautiful version by the late great Eva Cassidy. After my grandmother passed away I was driving around and heard this song on the radio and it was the only time before or since I'd ever heard it played. I took it as a sign that everything was alright.

Ah dude I can't even listen to that song anymore. And then there's Someone In The Dark, aka The NO MERCY Song, which I haven't been able to listen to since he passed away.
