I chose Led Zeppelin and Pink Floyd because they are two of my all time favorite bands. It was tough because you listed a lot of great bands but those are my picks. http://www.beatlelinks.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/cool.gif

OMI GAWD....You forgot the Eagles. They still have the biggest selling album of all time. Why is Nirvana on this list. All Cobain did was yell and make horrible sounds with his guitar. Is there anyone out there who could understand even one word that he 'sings'? Being a Beatle fan I can not understand what people see in Nirvana.
Oasis?? Oasis who?? Aren't they the rap group that did 'Hey Ya'! I'm only kidding, but to put them on a list with The Stones, Doors and Queen is not right.

Nirvana isn't my style, but I admit a lot of people like this band. Remember that they're the icon of the 90's, everybody was doing the same, and they changed music a bit (not as the Beatles, of course).

Not to start a debate or anything, but Nirvana is probably the definitive band of the 90's Really, who else was there? I thiink they have every right to be on that list.(as well as some others that didnt make it) Besides what did the eagles do that was so great besides singing about a hotel http://www.beatlelinks.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/biggrin.gif

Tough choice tho' seeing as to how i like every band up there (to varying degrees of course)

Since Pepperland Kamer aked a question, I will answer it.
Question: What did the Eagles do besides sing about a hotel?
Answer:
1. The number one selling album of all time 'Their Greatest Hits,71-75' which was the first album ever to go platinum.....oh yeah.....it sold 28,000,000 copies.
2. Two albums in the top ten sellng albums of all time, 'Their Greatest Hits 71-75' and 'Hotel California'.
3. In the 70's...five number one songs and four number one albums.
4.'Hell Frezes Over (1994) sold 10,000,000 copies.
5. Members of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.
6. Can get fans to pay up to $265 a ticket for their sold out concerts.
Maybe Nirvana was the best band of the 90's....but with the 60's being the best decade for music, each decade the music gets worse and worse. So far in my life the 90's music was inferior to the previous four decades.
One nice thing that I can say about the heroine addict Cobain and Nirvana was that the Beatles were one of their influences.

At the bookstore recently I was flipping through a book containing some original diary entries by Cobain. I was actually impressed and found Cobain to be a very thougtful and intelligent person with a lot of very good ideas. His love of the Beatles came across very cleary in his entries and at one point he states that his discovery of the Beatles Something New album 'saved' him from the dross that was the music scene in the 80's.

I like Nirvana as much as the next person, but I feel that Soundgarden and Alice in Chains were better musically. Also enjoy the quirkiness of Mudhoney and the timing of Babes in Toyland.

But as we get closer to the 2000s, I feel it's too hard to declare a band "great" until they have proven their worth.

The point is that I and many people don't know anything about them...to be "one of the best band" means that your good work was recognised by a lot of people, even by those who don't like it. How can a band be "one of the best" if more than the half of the world don't know it to say if it really is or not?

I'm not saying those bands are bad (well, TSP is crap, for me)...can you see my point? http://www.beatlelinks.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Queen and Nirvana.

Older people may think Nirvana is just screaming and the musical equivalent of depression. But for my generation, it was basically our musical crowning achievement. "Smells Like Teen Spirit" IS Generation Y.

Are they overrated? Sure. They didn't save rock by any means. But they make for a cool listen.

I have to disagree. Greatness is an inherent quality in the music, and is not intimately related with popularity. Only the Beatles had such a remarkable combination of amazing music and massive historical impact the world over; some of the most excellent music made has languished in obscurity. In fact, the only other band I can think of that was even half so revolutionary and (in)famous the world over while making great music was the Sex Pistols. And they're music wasn't anything nearly so good as the Beatles! It has to be hoped that cult fandom will save the obscure geniuses, as has happened with Marc Bolan, The Music Machine, and, to some extent, the Kinks.
