Well, I will hopefully be able to avoid listening to this new version, it's been a long time since I disliked a cover that much.

But...

http://www.beatlelinks.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif

I have the 1984 version and I still get sooo (additionaly) energetic and get shivers all over...(well not all places hehe ) when Boy George goes

"And in our world of plenty we can spread a smile of joy. Throw your arms around the world at Christmas time."

and "ATMP" Phil Collins comes in and these amazing bass players

Now That!!!! is a fantaaaaastic part in the song

The new version is just DROSS. They're completely ruined the song by trying to 'modernise' it so that kids would buy it. Hardly any of them could even sing!

The 1984 release was fantastic. You know they were all there doing it for the charity, and not for the publicity.

I have to agree with Harb. I think it is sad to
bastardize stellar, classic works ostensibly just to
appeal to a younger audience. Why not just
treat them to the original? That would be a
kindness and a real treat!

I have bought child relatives Beatle CDs, REAL
Beatles and not "Beatle Kids" and "Baby Road"
because I want them exposed to the real McCartney,
er, I mean McCoy, the genuine article.

Sad to see it come to this remake. If it ain't broke,
don't fix it.

Mmmm... I'm not so sure about that. Looking back over the Live Aid line-up, it's disturbing just many of the acts used the opportunity to plug their latest releases (or, in certain cases, temporarily revive their flagging careers).

I have to disagree with everyone. Although it's knowhere near good as 1984, this year's version isn't bad as all that. Apart from the rapping bit which is pointless, it's quite a good record.
I'm also confused, do people not living in the UK know who all these artists are?

It was never that great a song to start with and the new version is no weaker than the original to me anyway.
But what has happened to Bono's voice. Its terrible!

it was a great song to start with!
Does it matter anyway, the most important thing about the song is that it helps other people in Africa, less well off than ourselves. People are gonna buy the single whether they like it or not.

I'm in the UK and I haven't heard of over half of the 'megastars' they got listed.

I currently have a bet on with my mother. It really would not surprise me in the slightest if only a percentage of money raised went to charity - I can just see it now, written in tiny letters hidden in the smallprint - "70% of all money raised will go to Charity" or something.

If that happened then personally I'd boycott the single and urge others to do the same until those greedy b*****d record labels stopped thinking about their wallets and gave ALL the profits to charity.

This song smacks of " Look at me, I'm so charitable I've given up 10 minutes of my time to record a naff record before popping out to dinner and then home to my big house!".
Ignore this record and donate money to charity instead!
Your ears will thank you in the end!

I agree. If what I suspect about only a percentage going to charity rather than everything then I will boycott the single and request that other people do the same and send the money instead direct to the charity involved.
