NEW YORK - Rolling Stone magazine has named the top 500 songs of all time in its new issue, and, well, the No. 1 song isn't exactly a complete unknown.

Bob Dylan's "Like A Rolling Stone" tops the list, compiled from votes by 172 critics and musicians that included Brian Wilson, Joni Mitchell, Jeff Tweedy of Wilco and others — in a special issue that hits newsstands Friday.

"No other pop song has so thoroughly challenged and transformed the commercial laws and artistic conventions of its time, for all time," writes David Fricke, a senior editor of Rolling Stone.

Following Dylan is the Rolling Stones' "(I Can't Get No) Satisfaction," John Lennon (news)'s "Imagine," Marvin Gaye's "What's Going On" and "Aretha Franklin's "Respect."

"It's worth noting that "Like a Rolling Stone" and "Satisfaction" were recorded within a month of each other," Fricke told The Associated Press Wednesday. "It says a lot about how fast pop music was moving at that time."

Rounding out the top ten are "Good Vibrations" by the Beach Boys, "Johnny B. Goode" by Chuck Berry, the Beatles' "Hey Jude," Nirvana's "Smells Like Teen Spirit," and Ray Charles' "What'd I Say."

No one makes the chart more than (surprise, surprise) the Beatles, who have 23 tunes on the list. The Rolling Stones have 14 hits, and Dylan 12.

Though the list is heavy on the `50s, `60s and `70s (voters were told to focus on "the rock 'n' roll era"), the most recent song is 2003's "Hey Ya!" by Outkast, charting at no. 180.

Squeaking in as the 500th all-time best song is Boston's "More Than a Feeling."

Bob Dylan = the most overrated solo artist of all time.
Nirvana = the most overrated band of all time

I like Nirvana, but I think they (along with SLTS) are overrated. I've never understood Bob Dylan's appeal.

I do have to admit, my post #238 is very overrated. Guys, I'm never gonna write another post like that again. Please stop living in the past.

The list can line hamster cages if "New Orleans" by Gary US Bonds isn't on it.

If you just look at bob dylans lyrics and take the time to really pay attention, a person could very well get the idea why he's a genious in words. I mean, not too many people can write like that. And another thing, by the way he writes, it inspires others to write as well. I hope to one day meet the man, and tell him myself how he truly has a good way with words.

Bob should have the first ten spots! It's awesome he got #1 and so well deserved. "Like a Rolling Stone"...I can think of others which I find more profound, but hey, that one'll certainly do. http://www.beatlelinks.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif

I don't really agree he should have the top ten spots. LARS is one of my favorite songs of his, and there are many others I love, but as far as I am concerned Bob Dylan is not the end all be all. No offense whatsoever Hari's Chick. I think your opinion is certainly within reason, because Bob has written many great songs, but I know many other artists who have written many just as great and better.

But these lists....all subjective.

I think Desolation Row is better than Rolling Stone
