There's Sgt Pepper, and my favorite SMiLE, so what's your favorite concept album?

Sgt. Pepper will always be a favorite of mine but #1 would be The Who's Tommy.

Days of future passed by the Moody Blues. The first real concept album. Sgt. Pepper's really isn't a concept album.

Yep, the Moody Blues one come to mind as well,

morning, afternoon, evening....

pretty much a concept. Why is Sgt Pepper a concept album?

How about this Marroon 5 album, that's all about one girl.

Theres no way Sgt Pepper is a concept album. The original idea may have been to make it one but it never happened.
The recently released Smile gets my vote for the best attempt.

The first rock concept album I can think of is the beach Boys' Little Deuce Coupe album from 1963, theough IMO Be True To Your School spoils it.

I still like The Wall best.

And no, Pepper is no concept album. It was when the boys said it was, but then they said it wasn't, so it wasn't.

Quadrophenia by The Who. I've always found it superior to Tommy.

The very first "concept album" (i.e., a whole set of pop tunes arranged around a central theme or mood) would have to be Frank Sinatra's "In the Wee Small Hours" (a collection of slow ballads or "torch songs") from 1955. The first, and the best.

My favorite ROCK concept album would have to be Pink Floyd's "The Wall", which I called at the time of its release in 1979, "this generation's 'Sgt. Pepper'." http://www.beatlelinks.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/rocknroll2.gif

Some of my other favorite rock concept albums include:

Pink Floyd's "Dark Side of the Moon", "Wish You Were Here" and "Animals"; The Who's "Tommy" and "Quadrophenia"; The Moody Blues' "Days of Future Passed"; and the Beach Boys' "Surfer Girl" and "Pet Sounds". http://www.beatlelinks.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/thumbsup2.gif

Exactly. The concept is there for not even three songs. SPLHCB and the reprise are among the concept, and the first two words on the CD version of Pepper (which I always thought was out of place and should have been at the end of the first track), "Billy Shears."

I second that.

Also, "Arthur" by The Kinks.
