I have not watched 'Saturday Night Live' for about a year because of horrible guest hosts and singers that I never heard of or (c)rap singers. I decided to watch saturdays show because my favorite actor of the moment Jude Law was guest hosting. The opening monologue was excellent with the female cast members singing 'Hey Jude' to the guest host. However the show went down te tubes after that. They had a presidential debate skit at I could not tell Kerry from Bushit.
Then one of the all time worst moments in television history happened. Ashley Simpson came out to sing her second song. The band started to play and we heard singing, but Ashley was not moving her lips.......and it was the first song that she 'sung'. Needless to say this no talent didn't know what to do...so she ran off the stage.
I know that many of these young no talents do not sing at their 'concerts'...like Titney Shpearsh. Finally one of theses no talents got caught. I hope they change the name of this show to Saturday Night NOT live' One thing is for sure, thanks to Ashley Simpson I won't watch the stinky SN(not)L again!
Now you have to wonder that if in the past...did others not sing too? Did Sir Paul and Lady Linda really sing 'Hey Jude'. Did George and Paul Simon really sing 'Here Comes The Sun' and 'Homeward Bound'? OF COURSE I AM ONLY JOKING ABOUT OUR HEROES DOING SOMETHING SO UNDERHANDED.
This only goes to show you that the 'new' music SUCKS.....DONKEY!
All I can say is BEATLES FOREVER!!!

The Beatles mimed "it Won't Be Long" on Top of The Pops- I saw a clip and John starts strumming a milisecond after the music starts.

I didn't watch the show, but I heard about it this morning on the radio. Here's a link to Ashlee's "performance":

What are you talking about? That was the funniest part of the night.
And why was this done? Ashlee Simpson's crew heard her rehearsals and convinced her to lip-synch because she sucked. Lorne Michaels apparently didn't know about it until after the moment.

The videos for Hello Goodbye were banned from UK TV for years due to the transparent miming of The Beatles.
Also, they taped the concert segment of Around The Beatles (on video as The Beatles Live! Ready Steady Go) 10 days before the filmed performance was done, which they mimed to.
This is done always in case of microphone failure or other technical mishap, the tape itself in this case being the mishap.

Nearly all the acts that appear(ed) on SNL do or did sing live as far as I know, at least in the old days. (Though Paul has been known to sing live along with a pre-recorded vocal track (not lip-synch) and may have done so on SNL.
A REALLY good example of live singing in the old days of SNL -- the first time Elvis Costello was on the show, he was warned not to sing the song "Radio, Radio." He started in singing a different song and after about a verse or so, stopped dead, said something to the effect of "screw this, I'm gonna sing what I want to," and launched into "Radio, Radio." He was not asked back to SNL for a good long time!
I believe that most acts DO sing live on SNL, though...but BTW, even the Beatles lip-synched now and again, you can tell on a lot of the old "Ready, Steady, Go!" shows that they're synching, there are no leads attached to their guitars and John is the WORLD'S WORST lip-syncher, or was until Ashley Simpson, lol!
Not defending Ashley, mind you, I think she's a no-account no-talent just like her sister, Titney, the Backside Boys and N'Stink...but this isn't the first time it's been done, unfortunately. Ashley just happened to get caught is all...

BWAH! You're so right, but I think the key is that he just didn't give a ****. http://www.beatlelinks.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif I looooooove watching their old lip-synch performances because they're so hysterical.
But regarding Ashlee, I find it kind of funny that anybody's scandalized by this. I actually kind of feel sorry for the kid - she's a teenager and she had NO idea how to deal with this kind of thing.
I don't know a thing about her songs, so I won't make any value judgements as to whether they suck or not. Some pro musician friends of mine kind of like her album, manufactured or not.

And the latest spin...
Ashlee Simpson's dad blames acid reflux disease for 'Saturday Night Live' gaffe

NEW YORK, Oct. 25 — If Ashlee Simpson's stomach was upset Saturday night, imagine how she's feeling now.
The 19-year-old singer was busted for a ''Saturday Night Live'' lip-synch gone awry. Her manager-father said Monday his daughter used the extra help because acid reflux disease had made her voice hoarse.
''Just like any artist in America, she has a backing track that she pushes so you don't have to hear her croak through a song on national television,'' Joe Simpson told Ryan Seacrest on Los Angeles radio station KIIS-FM. ''No one wants to hear that.''
He insisted it would be Ashlee's live voice alone during her appearance on NBC's ''Radio Music Awards'' Monday night.
And he said she's never used the extra help onstage before.
''The whole situation was a bummer,'' Ashlee Simpson said in an interview on MTV's ''Total Request Live.''
Simpson had performed her hit single ''Pieces of Me'' without incident earlier on ''SNL.'' When she came back a second time, her band started playing and the first lines of her singing ''Pieces of Me'' could be heard again.
She was holding her microphone at her waist at the time. Simpson looked momentarily confused as the band plowed ahead with the song and the vocal was quickly silenced.
A flustered Simpson made some exaggerated hopping dance moves, then walked off the stage.
She told ''TRL'' that she and her band didn't know what to do. ''I think all of us went into a state of shock,'' she said.
The incident exposed what many consider an obvious secret: that some singers who appear onstage aren't singing live at all, or at least have their voices augmented by backing tracks. And it's happened before on ''Saturday Night Live,'' too, executive producer Lorne Michaels told the Associated Press.
''She was mortified and in her dressing room, but (producer) Marci (Klein) got her to come out for goodnights and explained that it wasn't the end of the world. It wasn't her fault,'' Michaels told AP Radio.
''Every artist that I know in this business has had vocal problems at some time — from Celine on down,'' said Joe Simpson, also father of Jessica Simpson. ''So you've got to do what you've got to do.''
He said it was his decision to use the tapes when it became apparent that acid reflux disease had swollen Ashlee's vocal cords. After consulting Wayne Newton's doctor, she received a cortisone shot to get her ready for the ''Radio Music Awards,'' he said.
It was the band's drummer who pushed the wrong button onstage, he said.
Said Michaels: ''If she were a more seasoned performer then I think that she would've taken charge and said, 'No, let's start this over again.'''
To add to Ashlee's indignity Monday, eBay.com was auctioning off her private cell phone number, which it said had been inadvertently, and briefly, posted on her Web site.

Lol, i didnt see what Ashley Simpson did, but i heard about it. I think it would have been funny to see that! It would be different if i actually liked her, but in the words of Conan O Brien: "Yes, we laugh at other people's humiliation!"

I know that on a lot of the old television shows such as Dick Clarks' American Bandstand' they lipsynced. I guess this was done because the singers were appearing on more than one show a day to promote a new record and didn't have time to set up instruments. Some were really bad while others looked as if they were really singing.
Some shows did not allow lipsyncing such as 'The Ed Sullivan Show'.

I feel sorry for the girl too, a seasoned person, would have been able to pick it right up, and run with it...I don't see what the scandal is, other than a failure to communicate with the producer that there were problems with her voice, and to let the producer make the decision whether to go live as her voice was,or use voice over, which would defeat the shows purpose/theme "Live".
