View Full Version : Get into The Doors

The Beatles and The Doors had a connection with each other. Derek Taylor helped The Doors get their musical career started. Paul McCartney was at one of The Doors concerts in England when The Doors toured Europe. George Harrison stopped by The Doors recording studio when he was in L.A in 1969. The Beatles bought ten copies of The Doors first album. George introduced the Doors in a 1972 concert, a year after Jim Morrison died. John Densmore (the drummer for The Doors) is a Beatle fan.....

Okay...since this is really about the Doors and not the Beatles (discussing the connection does not make the topic about the Beatles, sorry), I am going to move it to Not Only A Northern Song.

Um...is my memory deceiving me, or was there a similar topic that I moved sometime in the last week? http://www.beatlelinks.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/confused.gif Maybe I'm imagining it...

Just because theres a Beatles connection dosent mean theyre all that great (just like it should'nt influence your vote right? http://www.beatlelinks.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif )The doors are a good little band with a bunch of good songs and Jim Morrison is certainly an interesting figure, but i still find them to be highly overrated.

That's sad you think that....

Naa, it isnt sad at all.

I agree that it is kinda sad. Most people only know of a few of their songs (Light My Fire, The End, etc..) and then form their opinion. Musically I think that they were great, and not just because of Jim Morrison.

The doors were a top band. Jim Morrison was a poet. I like just about everything they did. Especially Morrison Hotel. I've been through my Doors stage. Might listen again one day, as you do. As far as them and the Beatles. The Beatles used to love to see other acts. Hendrix comes to mind. But they were restricted because of their fame of course. They just loved music.

I do think that the Doors are one of the all time best bands. Jim Morrison was a free spirit poet who just happened to have one of the best rock voices that I ever heard. The organ in 'Light My Fire' is in Billy Preston territory. With apologies to Sir Paul and George.....my three favorite rock singers are John Lennon, Freddie Mercury AND Jim Morrison.

Sure it's sad if you only base your opinion on a few songs. That would be like someone basing their opinions on the Beatles based on "She Loves You" But i have 2 doors albums and a greatest hits, so i think im able to form an opinion (although im not saying that anyone here said that i wasnt able to in the first place, so im not picking fights) But based on the stuff i have, i like the Door's, like i said before. But i still just find them a tad overrated.Hopefully when i buy the rest of the Door's original albums,(which i intend to) something will impress me enough so i wont think this way. And for the record i think Jim has a good voice too

I like the Doors, but honestly, they are probably one of the most overrated acts in history. (I like Nirvana too, but I'm not afraid to say that they are the most overrated band ever.)

The Doors are good but at the same time they're too sloppy and it's a chore to listen to one of their albums in full.

the doors were an outstanding group. extremely talented. i of course do not rate them as high as the beatles but i do not frown upon those who do.

This is sad that most of your replies are negative and saying that The Doors are overrated. I haven't even heard of them in my younger years! I heard of The Beatles when I was a baby! But not The Doors....

Really? Light my fire, love her madly, touch me etc are played a lot on the same type of stations that play the beatles. I found i knew the words to them before i knew who the doors were, and when i confused Jim Morrison and Van Morrison as the same person (i did the same with Neil Young and Neil Diamond!) And just because a band dosent get a lot of air play, dosent mean they cant be overrated. There are plenty of bands that receive little air play that are overrated, due to stature etc.

No, I remember it too.

There are only two essential Doors songs: L.A. Woman and Love Her Madly. Some others are good, some are ok, but the rest I can live without (is it just me, or is "Riders on the Storm" just long and pointless?).

"The End" and "Peace Frog" are my 2 favorite songs by them.

Were not being negative, were just disagreeing on a few points here. We are allowed to discuss music right? And discussing music usually invovlves these kinds of arguments. If we all liked the same thing, we'll that just wouldnt be interesting would it? And I'm still going to post even if i disagree and even if I may not have the most flattering things to say about a particular band etc. http://www.beatlelinks.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/devil5.gif

hey! soul, this is an open discussion, no one here has really insulted the Doors...

The Doors used to be one of my favorite groups, imo they were great when they first started putting music out, as time went on with them,I found myself disenchanted with their newer music, and chose to move on, and not buy anymore of their records, as for their oldest recordings, I still like them.. http://www.beatlelinks.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif

I've never cared much for the Doors -- I find most of their music to be overrated, IMO. Certainly there are a few hits that everyone seems to like, but wrapped up in this for me is the extreme negativity of Morrison's personality -- he was a man with some very serious problems, and I find it really disturbing. I find it hard to separate the music from the man.

Add to that the fact that I think their music probably sounds better when you're tripping on LSD (and no, I'm not accusing anyone of using LSD, so don't leap down my throat), and it just adds up to "very boring" in my book.

Not putting down anyone who likes them, but I never found them interesting in the least.

I agree; Jim Morrison's goal was not to make music, it was to shock and even disgust people. I personally think it started as a joke that Jim took way too far.

Especially that line in "The End." You all know which one I'm talking about ("Mother, I want to #@*! you"). It's not funny, it doesn't serve any purpose, and it's in poor taste.

Never was a Doors fan although Ray Manzerak is a cool guy and I did own the LA Woman album.

All of you are just saying all these negative things beacause you don't understand Jim like the real Doors fans do....

Pepperland Kamer
Oct 26, 2004, 09:02 PM
No, were saying these things becase thats how we feel. And if I have to "understand" Jim or anyone else for that matter, its hardly worth the effort. Great music is music you can enjoy without having to know the history behind the band or singer (although it can add to your enjoyment).

So totally true, Joe...

I dunno, if you're so insulted that a bunch of BEATLES fans don't all care about the DOORS, SHG, then maybe you should go post about Jim Morrison on a Doors forum where everyone "understands" him. On a forum devoted to one particular band (e.g., the Beatles), you're not necessarily going to find people with the same musical tastes as you regarding other groups, but variety is the spice of life. I'm sorry you don't seem to like it when people say they don't like the Doors.

Me? What I DO "understand" is that I don't like him and do not care for the Doors' music. But I'd never, ever put anyone else down for liking them, just like I'd never put anyone else down for not liking the Beatles.

The Doors are okay. I like a lot of their hits, but don't know a whole lot about them. What little I had learned really didn't make we want to learn more. Still, I like to listen to their music. Not a die hard fan by a long shot, but that's okay. Guess I'm really only a die hard fan of the Beatles. Like I told someone years ago. I just don't have the time/effort/money to like anyone else as much as I do the Beatles. http://www.beatlelinks.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif

I have a greatest hits album of the Doors and I must admit, it's very padded. There are only maybe seven songs on it that I frequently listen to.

They're ok, but I don't think I'll be buying anymore of their stuff.

And yeah, you can't expect a group of Beatles fans to like the Doors. You can bet that everyone here loves the Beatles, but the Doors are a totally different, much less professional, much less classy, all in all WORSE group.

I like some songs of the Doors' music, but certainly would not consider it a long lasting world act. Sorry, but just my personal taste.

I can really enjoy

Love Her Madly
Hello I Love You
Indian Summer
L.A. Woman http://www.beatlelinks.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif
Peace Frog
Spanish Caravan

But, to appreciate more of their music I would have to understand Jim Morrison? That would take me years to even try http://www.beatlelinks.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/cool.gif

Bringing this topic back from the dead because surprise! I am getting heavily into the Doors and Jim Morrison recently. I've been playing their music a LOT recently (thanks to a friend ) and I even bought the Doors movie (it was only 9.99 and 2 discs), so obviously I take back MOST of the negative things I said before. I guess they were pretty good afterall huh?

P.S I have not been brainwashed
