the police and the beatles?

I've always found that the police were very similar in many respects to the beatles and were one of the very few bands that lived up to the beatles level of artistic maturity. Now don't get me wrong I do not think that the police are anywhere near as good as the bealtes (no band is). But I feel they are one of the few bands that had the same qualities that made the beatles so good. Innovation (the police incorporated reggae into thier music), sophistication, diversity,studio professionalism and good old fashioned pop sensibility. I wish we had more bands like this these days. Actually I feel R.E.M sometimes reaches a certain standard of musical excellence but few other contempary bands even come close. Opinions?

aww man I thought we were gonna talk about actual police officers and The Beatles, gotta be some cool stories there!!! I am not that familiar with the band Police, that was a band with Sting right?

Matt, believe it or not I think this thread might be better served in the Not Only A Northern Song forum, mostly because it's really more about The Police and how they comapre to the Beatles than the Beatles themselves...I don't like to move topics, particularly, but after reading your post several times I think that's where it really should go. So...I'm going to move this.

I like The Police. However I don't compare them to The Beatles. When The Police were together they made good music. I'm not into they're not as good as... or they are better than... because they are who they are and they play what they play as they play it. I like bands with a sense of who they are and what their music sounds like. I like Cheap Trick a band influenced by The Beatles and a few other British invasion bands. However they still sound like Cheap Trick.
