saw "HEAD" The Monkees movie releaded dec 1968 and wanted to tell you guys who may be interested to go rent it.Now first off im not a big Monkees fan (they had some good song writters like carol king> neil diamond)but my interest in them is as we know they are the "pre fab four" they were made as a responce to the Beatles.Anyway the movie is very beatleistic with Beatley sounding music Heck they even mention ringo and have sonny linston in the movie(hes also on sgt pepper album is why i brought him up)the movie was written by a young jack nickolson(yes that jack!) and has many interesting sight gags and skits (like help and hard days night,MMT) another intersting thing is its a "kid" movie with lots of comedy but they had the guts to put in many serious commentaries on the veitnam war. its also the very first album that the monkees actually played their own instruments because they got tired of all the ridicule for using studio musicians>any way i am beginning to ramble but a silly 1968 kid movie with "actors "as a beatle like band is actually a very interesting movie Micheal nesmith went on to invent MTV which you can tell kinda came from movies like this anyway with out the beatles this movie or the monkees would never have exsisted

I've seen "Head," and I actually have it on tape, I recorded it off the TV a long time ago. I HATE it. I think it is ridiculous and unwatchable -- it's not at ALL like the Monkees TV show, so if you go into it expecting that, you will be sorely disappointed.

Frankly, I think you probably have to be in an altered state in order to watch this movie, and considering I don't drink or get high, it's probably wasted on me. But I have to disagree and say that I think it's dreadful. http://www.beatlelinks.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/afraid1.gif And I DO like the Monkees.

I'm with you on this one Susan. It's just too bizarre. There's some good music in there, but I can't watch the movie.

I agree that it is a strange movie, not at all like the show, and not for everyone. However, I stilled loved it (even though I was not in a mind-altered state). It's creative, funny, and really weird (which is probably part of the reason I liked it).

Hey Susan, I would be happy to take that tape off your hands. It sounds like it would be just my type of movie. Let me know, ok?

In the movie HELP during the cellar scene with the tiger, Ringo always reminds me of Peter when he is trying to remember the tune.

I have always liked the Monkees....They are better then average harmonizers and their songs are well written. BUT I did not like the movie. I agree, I think it is too weird. Ths movie will not appeal to everyone. Maybe I didn't like it because there were no hit songs in it. I taped it and after watching it I erased the tape. I think it was on MTV in the late 80's. I would advise to rent it first before buying unless you can get it in the 'bargain bin'.

This movie has been described as "A Hard Day's Night on acid" and that's an understatement.

I've always respected how the Monkees ended up addressing accusations that they weren't a real band by putting out an album with songs that they not only wrote and performed every single note on, but surpassed the quality of the songs that were wirtten for them when they had the backing of the greatest songwriters available, greatest studio musicians around, and the financial support of the biggest TV company around. Can you imagine giving a bunch of guys in their early 20s songs like I'm a Believer, Last Train to Clarksville, Valleri and saying "Now you guys not only have to write a bunch of songs that are at least as good as that, but you have to write them for a public that's extrememly cynical towards you and wants you to fail and you have to do it all by yourselves". It's like demanding that Sean Connery break into Fort Knox singlehandedly when it's discovered that he isn't a superspy in real life...and then having him do it. Incidentally, the album I'm talking about is their third record Headquarters which dominated the top of the charts with Sgt Pepper in 1967.

Anyways, that's where I'm coming from with the Monkees and Head defines their struggle for independence with a film that completely destroyed what the Monkees were supposed to be about in favour of what Micky, Mike, Peter, and Davy wanted them to be about. I really respect that they put out a movie that they must have known was going to be their death knell, just because it had something important to say and because it was honest. Personally, it's my second favorite film of all time.

I've watched Head two times both in while I was in college- one time I was stoned out of my mind and the other time I was normal...to tell the truth, the movie made much more sense if you got stoned. Sober? Forget it!

I haven't seen this movie called Head. I have heard about it before, and from what I have heard, it sounds weird just like The Beatles movie The Magical Mystery Tour. Now that movie is a real winner! http://www.beatlelinks.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh2.gif I do how ever like the music scenes in The Magical Mystery Tour movie, and also the bite with John shoveling speghetti onto a fat womans plate! http://www.beatlelinks.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh7.gif

I have never been in an "altered state" (accept on allergy medications :P), yet I really like it. Magical Mystery Tour is way better, though. Still, IMHO if you look at Head as a collection of short, trippy, artistic sequences, then it's really interesting. If you look at the film as a whole entity and try to piece together some underlying meaning, then it gets irritating. There is a framework of methodology and vibe that holds it together, though.

I'd reccomend it to anyone with an extra-ordinarily long or extra-ordinarily short attention span. Both types will dig it. http://www.beatlelinks.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Co -wrote it too I believe. I find it so odd this movie is all of a sudden showing up everywhere. Was it just re-released or something? I had never heard of it and I was able to find a copy at the first place I looked, another place had a poster of it on the wall and even Stevie's show was about it last night!!!!! I plan on watching it tonight.

LOL,

Well I finally gave it a whirl. I can certainly understand why some might not think it was a 'good' movie. Especially if they were expecting the 'Hey, Hey, We're the Monkees' Monkees.

I found it to be typical of the psychedelic atmosphere of the 60's. I would put this movie in the category with movies like 'Candy' and 'Magic Christian'.

What I didn't like was the fact that it made me want to alter my mind and escape into a drug-induced world,jk. The colors and fast-changing images almost gave me a headache.

The music was ok couple in there that I liked. The bits of humor were interesting, found myself laughing out loud a couple of times. Some very Beatley references.
Loved the clothes and the dune buggy http://www.beatlelinks.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/biggrin.gif

I had forgotten just how small Davey was. And what an absolutely adorable voice he had.

It also made me wonder how they rated movies in the 60's. Geez a 'G' rating? It opens with a young woman sensually kising all 4 Monkees. hmmmmm and the belly dancing scene was a bit risque as well.

I enjoyed it, thank you twovirgins for the info on this one.

Okay, thanks for the review. Sorry, but it doesn't want to make me run out to buy it. http://www.beatlelinks.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif The bit about you almost getting a headache is what did it for me. http://www.beatlelinks.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif
