From the All Things Must Pass album AMG (http://www.allmusic.com/cg/amg.dll?p=amg&token=ADFEAEE47819DB49A47620C29B334D D9B14CF30FD14DE9813E334B45D3FB215C913475C74DD8DA97 E7B672AB78A8E02CA45A0B9FCCE453F4D6663D2DFC93&sql=1 0:47dnvwxva92k~T1) review:
"A very moving work, with a very significant flaw: the jams that comprise the final third of the album are entirely dispensable, and have probably only been played once or twice by most of the listeners that own this record."
What do you think of this? Do you skip the jams when you listen to ATMP? I don't...

To be honest, I don't think the album would suffer that much if the jams weren't there but it's nice to have them all the same.

At first, when I read what you posted, I thought "How silly, of course the jams are necessary!" Then I read the last part, and then thought "How many times have I listened to them?" http://www.beatlelinks.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/confused.gif
Probably less than five in the time since it was re-released. http://www.beatlelinks.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/redface.gif
But I resolved to listen to them more often from now on. http://www.beatlelinks.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/biggrin.gif

the triple album thing was a bit too much. I think the beatles could have pulled it off but for everyone else its a bit unrealistic.

I think the idea of a "monumental" album with a "huge" sound was really increased by these jams, which sound "monumental" and "huge", mostly because of the presence of so many instruments (played by so many good instrumentists, too)... the jams have helped the legend of All Things Must Pass, the greatest triple album of all time, to grow. Maybe George wanted to release some of the jamming he did in the sessions in order to illustrate the development of the album, and how hard must have been to coordinate the efforts to produce the masterpiece.
In any case I listen to them very much, and whilst I don't think they're absolutely needed for the quality of the album (it could have been a double for all that's worth), they are quite pleasing. I use them for studying, when I need to concentrate, but also want to hear good music. http://www.beatlelinks.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif

I believe the Jam Sessions are just as much part of All Things Must Pass as for instance I Dig Love.
I must admit, over the first months I played that part far less than the rest but that changed over the years. Like Darkhorse, I played it to concentrate on some things, it's not bad for background music.
Being a technical person as some say, I always tried to follow who-played-what, whereas we have George and Eric and Dave Mason on electric guitars.
On Out Of The Blue even Klaus Voormann picked up electric guitar, probably just out of the blue and it's believed that is where the tittle comes from.
Critics can have their opinions about the jam sessions, that's fine with me, but to me that's just lack of knowledge and interest, which is mainly how they can be described.

I think itīs good that the jams are on the album, because itīs kind of personal and it gives uns an insight on the music they (all the musicians on the album) loved to play together...do you know what I mean?
Anyway, to some of them I donīt listen very often, but I really love the last one,out of the blue. And Itīs Johnyīs birthday always makes me laugh http://www.beatlelinks.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/biggrin.gif
Stupid Question: Did they sing that for John Lennon? http://www.beatlelinks.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/afraid3.gif

Don't like the jams. They go nowhere. Background music at best.

Yes Oko asked George to do a version of it. Aparantly George doesn't know how it ended up on the album.
I don't listen to the jams very much, I often can't keep the tracks apart they all sounds the same to me. "Plug me In" is great, but by the time "Out of the Blue" begins to play, I start to think, what a long track is this, while in fact two others have come and gone already. Then I either stop the cd, or do something else.

My favorite of the jams would be the one with the static at the beginning.

You mean the sound of like an old steam train rolling in to the station?
That is my favorite one too, it would do great on a party, it swings and and more than the others identify Eric and George's guitars.
A little touch on the sound can even make it 1960's Soul music http://www.beatlelinks.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif

I always skip the jams. For years I tried to appreciate them but except for "Johnnie's Birthday," which I love, I find them boring. I've often wondered how such a talented group of musicians could make such boring music! http://www.beatlelinks.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/tongue.gif

I think you haven't wondered enough
Talented artists Jam all the time, but there are few who offer the result to their fans to listen to...

I'll have some of that! http://www.beatlelinks.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif
I don't mind the jams at all. I don't necessarily listen to them every ime I listen to ATMP but sometimes I'll just listen to them all by themselves, along with Johnny's Birthday. My favorites are probably Plug Me In and Thanks For The Pepperoni. The latter's the only one I know what George plays.
And I love how Plug Me In jumpstarts after Johnny's Birthday. The first time I heard the start I almost jumped right out of my skin. http://www.beatlelinks.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif
And if anyone's wondering http://www.beatlelinks.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif, the one with all he static at the beginning is I Remember Jeep. http://www.beatlelinks.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif
