This is one of my very favorite Beatles/George songs, that somehow seems to go relatively unnoticed by the unenlightened http://www.beatlelinks.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif ( I always joke that it was about me, as I have long blonde hair and eyes of blue http://www.beatlelinks.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/inlove2.gif )
ANYWAY, what I'm wondering, is what does he say at the very beginning of the song, that's almost cut off when the music comes in? I think it's "To your..." something. It drives me crazy, anybody know?
Love love love!

I think whats said is To Your Mother but I'm not sure.
BTW the long blond hair and eyes of blue bit is taken from another song called Sorrow - cant remember who sang it. http://www.beatlelinks.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif

I always kind of thought it was "To your mother!" too...but I figured I was just making that up in my head. http://www.beatlelinks.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/blush1.gif

I think it was the Merseybeats who sang sorrow. If not then its another Liverpool band. I love that song too. I don't think anyone knows for sure what it says, it always sounds to me like, "See your Mum!" or "To your Mum!"

Sorrow is a David Bowie song, but it post dates George's I believe.

I really like "It's All Too Much".
I thought the "Long blonde hair and eyes of blue" part at the end was referring to Pattie Harrison.

Bowie's version is a cover of the Merseybeats original. I'm pretty sure George admitted borrowing the line from that song.

"Sorrow" was a famous record in 1966 when Billy Kinsley and Tony Crane, one half of the Merseybeats changed their name to The Merseys and went right to the top.
Bowie did "Sorrow" on his Pin Ups album and was a single.
I do believe George has referred to the line he saw in "Sorrow" somewhere..

aw i'm so glad you started this thread, rays! i really love that song! it's definitely one of my faves. i love the organ in the beginning, and the end when they keep singing "too much"...my favorite line from that song is "all the world is birthday cake, so take a piece but not too much" : )
for the record, i always sing along saying "to your mother" in the beginning, but i really have no idea...it just seems to fit.
speaking of yellow submarine, it's becoming one of my favorite albums because all the songs are so fun to sing along to!!
...pink brown yellow orange and blue, i love you...
haha i just want to add that i originally posted "i'm glad you started this threat" on accident...i got a kick out of that

I believe for George the title "It's All Too Much" could have meant quite some things, however to me the following lines bring the sunshine because I know George refers to the eye contact he had when he first looked at Autobiography Of A Yogi and saw Yogananda's eyes
When I look into your eyes
Your love is there for me
And the more I go inside
The more there is to see
From a musical point, this is an expirenmental explosion which he also had in the other song from the album, which indeed sets the focus on the Yellow Submarine album as a fascinating album.
To Your Mom ?

Ooh, that's very interesting. Very cool. I just love the overall production to this song - there's so much there witht the instrumentation and effects, yet because of the relatively simple chord structure - just C/C/G/C/etc basically, it's not too much. Oh good lord, I didn't even realize that...
I can just listen to this song over and over again, and keep feeling happy and happier! http://www.beatlelinks.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif
