I really can't believe this, this is absolutely pissing me off more than anything. I doubt any of you DON'T know, but two planes just crashed into the World Trade Center about an hour ago and it's pretty clear that it was a terrorist attack. There's a rumor from a United Airlines employee that the smaller plane was hijacked. This is so unbelievable, I really hate terrorists. I'm so sad for all the people that had to die and even for the ones that had to witness it. Let's hope Bush doesn't let us down.

This is so scary!
I can't get onto any news websites either, just the BBC one for a couple minutes before I was booted from there.
Rell, a commercial plane crashed into the World Trade Center and a couple minutes later, a 737 crashed into the other building. They supposedly don't know much yet, but it's so obviously a terrorist attack.
Also, what looks like a fairly large chunk of the building just fell away and covered the surrounding area with smoke.
And- a third plane has exploded outside of the Pentagon about 20-30 minutes ago.
As I'm watching, it was just confirmed that the planes leaving from the Logan Airport in Boston were in fact hijacked. I'll write more as I watch.

What the heck, I just copy this from CNN for those who can not reach the www. It is from 14.57 GMT
NEW YORK (CNN) -- Terrorists struck the United States Tuesday morning in harrowing, widespread attacks that included at least three commercial jet crashes into significant buildings.
In the first attack, a plane hit the north tower of the World Trade Center in Manhattan shortly before 9 a.m., followed by another plane into the second tower about 20 minutes later. Both towers later collapsed.
About an hour later, a plane crashed into the Pentagon, part of which later collapsed.
American Airlines told CNN that it lost two planes in "tragic accidents:" Flight 11 from Boston with 81 passengers and 11 crew aboard and Flight 77 from Washington Dulles airport with 58 passengers and six crew aboard. Both planes were en route to Los Angeles
United Airlines Flight 93 airliner headed from Newark, New Jersey, to San Francisco, crashed near Somerset, Pennsylvania -- police said initial reports indicated no survivors. It was not known if this was connected to the attacks. United also said it was "deeply concerned" about Flight l75 from Boston to Los Angeles.
The Pentagon, the White House, the State Department, the Justice Department, the Capitol, the CIA and all other government buildings in Washington evacuated.
In the first ever national ground stop of aircraft, all flights nationwide have been stopped at their departure airports.
All international flights were diverted to Canada.
Israel has evacuated all its missions around the world.
President Bush cancelled an appearance in Florida to return to Washington, calling the crashes "apparent terrorist attacks" and "a national tragedy."
In Chicago, the Sears Tower was evacuated; United Nations in New York evacuated.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention in Atlanta was evacuated. CDC was preparing bioterrorism teams in case they become necessary.
The New York Port Authority said it had closed all bridges and tunnels into the city.
New York's Bellevue Hospital was designated command central for handling the catastrophe. Several hospitals have already reported receiving victims with burns and head injuries.
U.S. stock markets were closed after the New York attacks.

And I really DO hope we bomb people! I'm sick of watching the damn Palestinians on TV cheering over the deaths of innocent Americans!
Oh wait, if we bombed them, I guess we'd be just as bad.

I normally don't get online at work, but in the light of what happened I had to get together with everyone here....I was the first one here at work to find out; my boyfriend called me about it.
I'm stunned, not to mention afraid. I've tried calling Susan, but I couldn't get through earlier, and now the phones are down in NYC. She's got DSL, so I'm hoping she's still connected. Susan, JC, anyone in NYC or DC, if you're seeing this, let us know you're OK. (Tim, I'm glad your friend is OK.) I've got other friends in DC, and my grandmother is in Chicago....this is just horrible, especially since I can't get through to anyone. And we've got the radio stations on here, so you can't not think about this. I'm just trying to think of things to do as an individual to help with the aftermath, like donate clothes or maybe blood.
Sorry if this is rambling, but I'm sure we're all pretty shaken by this. I might get back on later this afternoon, especially if I hear anything.

I guess in this case 'distance makes no difference'.
I work for a US company called Marsh who have offices in NYC and in the WTC and also a few colleagues of our Rotterdam office are there right now, + one of my best clients, I know many colleagues who I saw at my NYC visit 2 years back, like one we had a barbecue at her house with her kids on this special monday which is in the US beginning of September.

Yeah, unfortunately there's no win-win situation here. The people cheering on the streets have suffered just as much heartache for decades, it is just unfortunate that each side is as bad as the other. There is really no effective defence against this heartless sort of attack, I guess the US and other countries will need to work extra closely now with sharing intelligence to prevent any of this from happening ever again.

Well, needless to say, it's shocking that such things continue to go on in our "civilized" world. I'm heart goes out to the victims of today, wherever they may be in this world.
I will take much of today to pray for people everywhere, whether you're in NYC, DC, anywhere in the USA or some other part of the world. I pray all of you are safe & that your loved ones are, too.
This is a reminder that we are really all the same & that we all share this planet. Somehow we must learn to live together or we'll destroy ourselves.
To quote one man...
Imagine there's no country
It isn't hard to do
Nothing to kill or die for
And no religion too
Imagine all the people
Living life in peace...
Just a thought from another...
Isn't it a pity
Now, isn't it a shame
How we break each other's hearts
And cause each other pain
How we take each other's love
Without thinking anymore
Forgetting to give back
Isn't it a pity
Some things take so long
But how do I explain
When not too many people
Can see we're all the same
And because of all their tears
Their eyes can't hope to see
The beauty that surrounds them
Isn't it a pity
Let's hope that this isn't the start of something, but rather the end.
You may say I'm a dreamer...
Peace & love to you all!

I guess it's premature to point the finger at any one person or organisation at this point in time. The same thing happened with the Oklahoma bombing where everyone said it was a terrorist group only to find later that it was one of their own. When I was in Washington D.C. about a month and a half ago, the people I worked with went to the Pentagon on a daily basis, sometimes in the mornings. I e-mailed my former boss and asked if she and the other people I worked with in the office were okay. They were there when the attack happened, everyone was evacuated. Everyone in the office I worked at, including my boss, is okay. Thank God. I heard from Susan's husband. From what he said, she's okay and will let us know what's going on when she gets the chance. I have another friend who lives in NYC, I hope she's okay. I met her this summer in Washington D.C.

I was in science class this morning when I heard about the crash. My first reaction was one of intrigue. I was thinking action-movie explosions! WOW! But after I learned that it was serious and everything I was shocked. My whole school (there are only 60 people in it) gathered around a radio and we all listened for about an hour in silence. It was awful. Afterward we talked about it a bit.
My history teacher made a point of saying that at this point we CAN NOT blame anyone. We simply don't know who is responsible at this point. It is perfectly natural to feel angry, but we can't say, "Let's bomb those Palestinians!" because it is very possible that they could have had nothing to do with it. At this point all we can do is wait for more information to unfold. I know I feel rather helpless - most people do I'm sure - and it is frustrating. I'm frightened of possible reprocussions caused by this whole thing. I sincerely hope that no war comes from this. WHAT IS WAR GOOD FOR????

Jesus! This has been probably one of, if not the worst day ever in our lives. It was Jerry who initially told me this afternoon. The news footage was just like a film. Unbelieveable! We've had so much talk about it at work today about the planes and the mysterious 5th plane.
My prayers are to everyone who has been affected by the terrible tragedy.

It's good to know the rest of you're all fine, besides that, of course.
Now I've come home again from the University and I've seen the images of the builiding recently fallen apart. It's still really schocking.
And now something's happening in Afganistan. I see a fire, and our local TV networks say it may be the groups against the government... But everything's so confusing...

ABSOLUTELY. But - and I was afraid of this - it looks like US retaliations have ALREADY begun. Parts of Afghanistan are being bombed to bits as we speak, and the pictures are just starting to come through. It seems to be an attack against the Taliban, but the story is still unclear at this stage. I'm sure we'll find out further developments soon.

Hey you guys!!!
I LIVE in NYC{The Bronx} and to see all this layed out in front of me totally scared me! I have been up since 7:00 AM EST so I did see the whole thing unfold LIVE!!! I have been watching the news and listening to the radio with all this. I have been writing every single detail of all this. And I still have that fear that a plane might hit anywhere in the city!!!
I have cried at all this.To see a woman, burned seriously, peeling off the nearly non-existant clothing and only being left of her underwear. I cried at that part.I'm still in shock that the one place I visited when I was younger {to the observation deck} and now both of those buildings are gone.
I can't hold back anything anymore. I really wonder how any of the Beatles reacted to this...
I just can't go on. To see a person throwing themselves out the window to their death was something I never EVER wanted to see. It's really, truly been this century's "Pearl Harbor". It really saddens me as a New Yorker who could see everything from my kitchen and bedroom window has become too much...
I'm going to cry now...

They just showed the worst footage I've ever seen that was caught by an amateur cameraman. They warned viewers before they showed the footage that it was very graphic, and with good reason too - you could actually SEE people falling (some from as high as 96 floors) all the way down to their deaths. Like ragdolls falling lifelessly. I can't believe what they just showed.

They showed another new shot of the second plane as it hit the building, looking up from ground-level at about a 45 degree angle. It had a pretty good zoom on it too, you could see the plane as it ploughed its way through and its nose cone was actually visible as it came right through out the other side of the building, a split second before everything blew up. Terrible.

Hello everyone, I'm sending this note from a friend's computer in New Jersey -- I got stuck here today, as I was halfway across the George Washington Bridge when the attack at the WTC occurred and could not turn around. I was going to NJ to run errands. They closed all the bridges back into Manhattan after I got here, but fortunately I have friends in Teaneck, and they took me in! (Thanks Nikki and Hank!)
Anyway...I live WAY uptown from the WTC, but I could see the smoke from the bridge as I crossed it, and of course I've been watching it on TV all day just like all of you. My husband works in Midtown, about three blocks from the United Nations -- he was sent home around noon. His mother was able to pick our son up from school -- it was his second day of preschool. Everyone in our family is okay, though I have not been able to get back to the city and do not know when the bridges and tunnels will be reopened to allow me to go home...I hope soon, as I don't even have a change of clothes!
We're all okay...I am as horrified by today's events as everyone else, and cannot believe the war zone that is my home town.
I'll keep everyone apprised when I get home, but rest assured I am well.

hello all -
again, many thanks for the concerns (nwm & harb in particular) regarding my cousin... hopefully we'll hear something soon. her name hasn't come up in any of the recent 'casualty lists'... it doesn't seem to mean much, but it does present some glimmer of hope that she got to safety. i promise to keep you all posted on what happens.
susan, i am so relieved to hear that you are safe and sound. there's one prayer answered - now all we need is to hear from jcb410 with the same good news. oh yes, and welcome, robofab4 to the forum.
i am definately still in shock - it all seems so surreal.

Oh God. Just seen the horrible footage of people jumping from the buildings on the 9 PM edition of the news... It's still shocking. Somehow I'll have to manage to forget this day. You know, September 11th is always a conflictive day here in Chile, because of the anniversary of Pinochet's criminal coming to the power. But today is all forgotten. This just has to be one of the worst days ever in the history of the world, and all I can hope is totally forget about it.
Today, chilean vice-president Josι Miguel Insulza (president Ricardo Lagos is visiting London at this time), gave a national message to our nation. More or less, he said "We are sending all our love and condolences to all the victims of the horrible pain and suffering the world has testified. Let's try to keep alive the peace that's been so hard for us to build. This is the time when the world has to be united in order to not permit that a thing like this can happen again."
I totally agree with him. I'll go to bed now too, but I'm sending all the love in the world to everyone in the USA, and in the rest of the world who are suffering from this horrible tragedy.
All we are saying is give peace a chance.

Sweetie, he's the President of the United States! Of course they're going to hide him! Are you crazy?? You just got finished telling me they've hidden your Queen. They'll do anything to keep Bush alive (as they should!).... he runs our country. Actually, I'm sure you're not getting all the reports since you don't live here, but Bush didn't want to even be in Nebraska, he wanted to be back in Washington working to help resolve this ..... but his Secret Service men wanted to keep him safe while he was enroute to Washington. It's not like he was already in Washington and decided to go joy riding around the country. He was in Florida on business when he heard the news, so they had to divert him until it was safe for him to get back to Washington.

I haven't been able to come on-line until now and I am relieved to see some of the New York people are accounted for. I'm sorry allie that your cousin is still missing but that may not mean the worst. The confusion I see on my TV tells me that she may just be unable to contact anyone. I think the whole world is in shock - not much production anywhere today. A certain fear and anxiety as to where this will head is with everyone too. I don't even know what to say. I woke up this morning at 7:30 and my mother told me. I cried for an hour before I went to work. I turned the news on at work, and watched it all day. I talked to customers all day about it. It makes me want to lose faith in the world. It makes me angry. Right now, I feel like I'm watching a movie. My thought's a prayers are with everybody. I pray there isn't a war. It's great to see that the U.S. is so strong and that we can deal with anything. I'm not that patriotic, but seeing all those poeple singing God Bless America, and seeing everybody's strength makes me appreciate this country even more.

I wish the news would be different. I had to peel myself from the TV (I didn't want to go to class today, but I had to). Ironically, they cancelled my bowling class (of all classes to cancel). I know we'll be talking about this in my history class tomorrow.
I'm still in shock. I walked around numb all day. I knew some people who were at the Pentagon when it was attacked. Luckily, the people I know got out just in time. Thank God Susan is safe. I was worried about her. I have another friend who lives in NYC, I haven't heard from her yet. I hope she's okay.
Thank God I came back to Illinois when I did, I wouldn't want to be working in D.C. now (like I did over the summer).
My friend told me that she heard from a guy who came into her work, he said that war was going to be declared tomorrow. I'm hearing that there's a war on terrorism. I hope there isn't a war, but I also hope that if they find the people who planned this or whatever that they are punished to the greatest extent.
This is another day which will live in infamy. 9/11/01 (9-1-1)

So many innocent people killed like that - I can't understand it.

I have just taken the time to read everyone's posts here. I understand the confusion that so many Americans are feeling this day. We must believe that justice will prevail.
I've seen a lot of photos and video footage of this tragedy, and it really makes me mournful to think that there are people out there capable of thinking up such a ghastly deed as this. Of the footage I've seen, I still can't believe what I saw. The second tower being hit, the people jumping, the towers collapsing, the Pentagon attacked, etc.
My first reaction was to send a prayer to all the victims and their families. As the news sunk in, I began thinking about Pearl Harbor. Were we going to war? Hopefully, we can resolve this crisis quickly and without declaring war.
In closing, I wish to offer up another prayer:
Lord, watch over the rescue workers as they do their best in assisting the injured and their families. Caress the souls of the innocent lives lost today and accept them to your fold. Give us the needed courage to pull together and help bring peace of mind to those who have yet to receive affirmation of loved ones still unaccounted for. Amen.

It must almost be dawn in New York by now so I hope that the light of the new day can aid the searchers in finding survivors.
And Harb...I have lost count of the different angles of the crashes they have shown on tv here - it seems that every hour there is a new piece of am-cam footage or something. They had one recently of the first crash which hadn't been shown before because I guess that was the first piece of action. All of them are as equally disturbing as the other.

Did anybody notice that the terrorist attacks occured on September 11. Then if you look at the flight numbers they were 11,93,175 and 77.Like 11 is today and there was flight number 11 then 9+3=12 thats tomorrow, 1+7+5=13 thats the day after then theres 7+7=14 and thats the day after that. Either its just a very strange coincidence or else it means something.

Allie,
The tears I'm crying now are ones of relief that your cousin is okay. I know we don't know each other, but we can't help but be affected by all of this.

Rell' is right, we have to consider how many people DID survive.

Firstly, Allie, I'm so glad to hear your cousin is OK. This is the first time I've been able to get to Beatlelinks since all this madness erupted, and reading through the previous posts, and after seeing the pictures on TV, I was afraid that she would have been amoungst those lost.
Well, what can you add to all this? One thing that strikes me is the fellowship amoungst the members here - I think that's something we all have to focus on over the coming days and weeks (and thereafter), and not just amoungst ourselves, but on a much wider scale. I know many Americans will be angry and seeking revenge upon those responsible as soon as possible - and understandably so...but we all, and particularly the powers that be, mustn't rush into anything. To be honest, when I heard the news I thought that Bush would be the worst possible president you could have in power at a time like this. He does display a very cavalier attitude to both human and natural life. It remains to be seen whether my fears are justified, but I sincerely hope his reaction is a considered one. The only way that we (and it is a problem for any civilised person/nation) can possibly eradicate this evil is to join together. Only by combining all of our intelligence and resources can we remove these evil elements. I think the time is now, as clearly whoever is behind this is happy to raise the stakes, and unless we move now I sincerely believe the world we live in will become very different...and full of fear for all of us.
I hope that Bush doesn't bow to pressure for immediate action, but takes the time needed to find and remove Bin Laden, or whoever it was. If he starts a bombing campaign on Afghanistan, and civilians die, then I'm afraid he is no better than a terrorist.
As we saw yesterday, it is very easy to destroy...but a lot more difficult to build a future, and that is something that Bush and the rest of the civilized world must now try to do.......together.

Quote in todays newspaper:
"Yesterday's attacks - so sophisticated they could have taken years to prepare - are believed to have been masterminded by the world's most wanted man, fanatical Saudi terror chief Osama bin Laden.
He warned three weeks ago that he would hit the US with a "very big one". One of his confederates is due to be sentenced at a court near the WTC today."

Dominic, that was beautifully said, and it couldn't have been said any better. The world needs to unite after something like this, not to seek revenge and destory itself in the process.

Obviously Osama bin Laden is the main suspect, but as Dominic said it's unwise to rush into assuming this and begin retaliation immediately. bin Laden has also been quoted as saying he had nothing to do with the bombings, so who's to know. No doubt that Bush will be pushed to find the culprit/s quickly or he'll face a lot of public pressure, so a scapegoat must inevitably be found right away.

Latest news in:
9 rescued to date (6 firefighters and 3 policemen).
I know there were a lot of uniformed men at the base of the building when it went down, but is it just me or does it seem like they're giving precedence to picking them out first as opposed to ordinary civilians? http://www.beatlelinks.net/ubb/smilies/thinker.gif
On a sadder and more tragic note, I heard that one of the firefighters was killed yesterday by someone who had jumped from the burning building (some 80-90 floors up) and landed right on top of him. How terrible. http://www.beatlelinks.net/ubb/smilies/images/icons/frown.gif

Yeah, nicely said, Dom http://www.beatlelinks.net/ubb/smilies/images/icons/smile.gif I do think that Bush will do what he thinks is best for our country, whether it be to retaliate or not. I'm game for whatever is neccessary.

You can say that again. As far as I'm concerned, war was declared on us yesterday. This is our one chance to get rid of ALL of these losers once and for all without the entire world criticizing us. Except for Boris of course.

Well, the news reports have been saying that over 700 leads have flooded the FBI and they have taken a rental car from Logan Airport in Boston, Massachusettes. I just can't believe all this is happening out of my window.
Thanx to everyone who are releved from hearing from me.I know there were a lot of people who were worried not just about me but for everyone who live, work or know someone who lives in the city.
And Ally,I'm happy to hear about that news. Just know that it's really something that people could survive in these kind of conditions.
And I haven't stopped cryin. http://www.beatlelinks.net/ubb/smilies/cry2.gif
And I'm going to go and give blood near by my house. It's basically one way that I'm glad that I have O blood!

A couple days ago I would have disagreed and said that's not fair to other innocent people in say, Afghanistan.
But then I saw all those Palestinians rejoicing in the streets with all their children and realized hey, those kids are growing up being taught that this sort of thing is ok. Which means the world will always have to deal with this shit.
So BLOW 'EM ALL UP!

Very eloquent.
But I think you misunderstood what I meant. I have no desire for our country to go out and kill innocent people. That wouldn't be justice really. To me, justice is basically this...
Tell any country that we suspect is harboring terrorists that we intend to find every single last one of these guys. And if they won't give them up, then we basically go in ourselves and do the job. And if anything gets in our way, then too bad. The time for diplomacy and mercy is long gone I'm afraid. It's time for our country to show some balls for a change, and just do the right thing.
