My Dad primarily likes The Beatles, The Rolling Stones, and The Who. He also likes Eric Clapton and Simon & Garfunkel. He's into classic rock.
My Mom likes country music (YUCK!). But that's a recent development. She grew up liking Elvis, The Carpenters, and Queen to name a few.
They both liked The Monkees way back in the day. I can't think of who else they like, but that's a pretty good idea of what they listen to. They were also not allowed to listen to their favorite musicians, watch them on TV or go to their concerts while they were still living at home. That is why my brother and I both now have free reign over who we can listen to. But I think Mom and Dad are happy that we like the same kind of music they like. images/icons/smile.gif

During my formative years, I was tormented with the stylings of Perry Como, Tony Bennett and Big Band music leaders like Glen Miller, Guy Lombardo and lots of broadway musical soundtracks, "My Fair Lady", "Camelot", etc. But when I hear it now, it's not so bad. Not that I'll run out and buy any of that, mind you, but it's ok. My Mom was also a big Carpenters fan, which was something we had in common. And think my Dad had a James Taylor tape. Is it any wonder why I have such a great love for music? Even though our tastes did differ greatly.

My mom, growing up in north Jersey where Sinatra was from, was what they called a "bobby soxer". The teenage girls wore bobby sox then and were into Sinatra like Sinatramania. She still has a scrapbook and a satin pillow with a picture of his face on it.

My parents enjoy music (Mom used to have a beautiful soprano voice and Dad used to play a bit of piano), but they don't even own a stereo and the whole idea of being a "fan" of something is totally foreign to them. They like show tunes and classical music and even the occasional pop tune, but they've never had any devotion to any group or artist, as far as I know.
My older brothers were the prime age for getting into all the 60's rock that their baby sister was a bit too young for, but none of them were into it at all. They too like music, but no particular artists. I don't know where my tendency to be EXTREMELY devoted to my favorites came from! images/icons/smile.gif

My dad loves 50's oldies - literally anything from that time. He likes 60's stuff too, but he says he was "too old" at the time ;-)
My mom likes the Beatles of course (it'd be kind of hard for her to stay "immune" with me around anyway images/icons/wink.gif ) and most 60's music.

My parents are just a bit too old for Elvis and a bit too young for Frank Sinatra...though they like Sinatra very much (and so do I!). My mom said her big heartthrob when she was in high school was Eddie Fisher! (Yes, Carrie Fisher's father...) My parents always liked show music too, and I have an appreciation of that because of them. My dad used to play records Herb Alpert and the Tijuana Brass a lot when I was a kid...and it was because of Dad that I gained my appreciation for Gershwin.
I also know that as a couple, my parents were really into Steve Lawrence and Eydie Gorme...God, their musical taste is SO hokey...

My mom is the same age as Paul, but she was never a Beatles fan. She loves Sinatra, Barbra Streisand, Neil Diamond, and (ugh) Celine Dion. graemlins/dead1.gif
My dad's the type that's very private about his music - he keeps his CDs hidden away, and he always uses headphones, even if there's no one else at home! When I finally found his CDs, they were surprisingly good - Eagles, ZZ Top, Allman Brothers...and when I went to college, he stole all my Fleetwood Mac CDs. graemlins/smile1.gif

My father was a huge Elvis fan, born the same year as him, even tried to comb his hair like the King. Was in the Army at the same time, but their paths never crossed. Both parents bought 45s in the late fifties (all mine now), like Fats Domino and the Everly Brothers to name a few. By the time i came along, both my parents listened only to the real good, traditional country music, and that's what i was raised on. They may not have been good parents, but they had great tastes in music!
Now Pops listens to a lot of Dean Martin and Frank Sinatra, Scottish fiddle tunes, and old country tapes i make for him. Mother and i don't speak, but i remember she liked Alan Jackson and Charley Pride a lot.

My dad likes classic rock, jazz and bluegrass! He especially digs the Stones...and wishes he could drum like Charlie Watts. images/icons/tongue.gif
My mom used to like easy listening/soft rock; but then Dad turned her onto the Stones and Eric Clapton. Then I turned her onto the Violent Femmes. She even left a Ramones tune on the radio at work (she's a hairdresser) and treated her elderly wash 'n' set customers to a blast of punk once.
I'm the only Beatlemaniac in the house, though. My parents don't mind graemlins/peace.gif solo, but they don't much like the Four together. I even remember the first time I blasted Help! on my stereo as a kid...my cat was sleeping on my bed, and she actually flattened her ears back and hissed before she sort of scurry-flew out of the room like a rat.
I swear I must be adopted.
