What's the scariest film you've ever seen?

I want to watch a film that will give me nightmares for a week after seeing it, but every time I've seen a 'horrifying film' like Jeepers Creepers, Blair Witch and Amityville Horror I've just laughed or lost interest.

The scariest film I've seen to date is Arachnophobia. VERY intense since I'm an arachhophobic myself.

The Changeling. That movie terrifies me! It's scary during the day time too, but it has the most effect if you watch it in the dark. graemlins/afraid7.gif

What about the Silence of the lambs??

Not for the movie (that's my favourite movie in fact) I mean Hannibal Lecter, I wouldn't like to find him on my way. graemlins/afraid2.gif

Hannibal was pretty good, it was more gory than scary, but when your alone in a cabin in the middle of nowhere watching it it can be pretty freaky!

Poltergeist is still my #1 favorite scary movie. Something about it still freaks me out every time I watch it (and I've seen it about 30 times). Probably the fact that the house I grew up in was built on cemetery property like the houses in that movie...not to give away much of the plot. The nice thing about Poltergeist is that, in general, the special effects haven't "aged" like the effects in a lot of other scary/ghost movies. The freak-out value is still the same as it was when it came out.

Exorcist was scary the first time I saw it...but I don't think it'd freak me out as badly again. I think it just confused me more--there were too many unanswered questions at the end of it.

I agree with a lot of you about The Exorcist. Last April, I finally got a director's cut of it on VHS. Some of the added scenes were definitely nothing I want my kids to watch anytime soon.

I'm not much of a fan of horror flicks (I'm a wimp) but one movie that scared the crap out of me was Cujo. And I watched it when I was little too so that movie made me scared of dogs.

If it's still in the theaters (the ONLY way to see a movie, IMO), I HIGHLY recommend "The Ring". Try to see it at night for the "full effect"...if you dare!!! graemlins/afraid5.gif

Only one that really scarred me as a young girl was a 70's flick called "Don't Be Afraid Of The Dark." And I understand it's being re-made. graemlins/afraid2.gif *
I've never seen "The Exorcist" and don't really care to see it.

Yeah, the Exorcist was really scary, so was Damion (I think that's the name of it). Any movie with exorcisms in it freak me out. The Shining has always been REALLY scary to me too. I love scary movies!

I also think Jaws was scary. That's why after a few scenes, I didn't watch anymore. And The Others was not so scary but it was interesting. Go and rent that movie.

The Texas Chainsaw Massacre(the original) was another scary movie. What made it scary was that it was based on a true story.

I think the girl and her friends were conjuring up the spirit with the ouija board....the beggining is confusing. I just get flipped out when she gets all possessed...I don' tlike seeing stuff like that...since its true and everything.

THE EXORCIST scared me cuz it was based on a true story and I am scared by things that could actually happen, not by stuff that couldn't. But I would have to say that JAWS scared me most--the first one. The sequels got progressively stupid.
I love horror movies, especially the real cheesy ones. I LOVE MST3K! Movies like ATTACK OF THE CRAB MONSTERS, KINGDOM OF THE ANTS, etc. make me laugh my heinie off!

Ya know, since I read Stephen King's novels, his movies don't really scare me. I watched the Shining for the first time ages ago, by myself, and I slept fine that night. I think the movies that prey on our own fears is what scares us the most. As a kid, when I watched, "Don't Be Afraid Of The Dark", I was constantly checking for little gnome monsters under my bed 'cuz that was something I always feared anyway. I think that stemmed from my sister who got us to stay in bed by telling us there were snakes under our bed. I think she stole that idea from one of Bill Cosby's skits. graemlins/laugh5.gif
I gotta admit that when I watched "Carrie" in the theater, I jumped when her hand came out of the grave. But, that was before I started reading his books. graemlins/wink3.gif

The show is on hiatus right now; we watch it at 9am on the Scifi Channel and it comes back next week.

LOL! I love Nigtmare on Elm Street! It scared me as a kid, but it's funny now.

Also, Child's Play! Seeing little Chucky run around with a knife and cussin' like a sailor just cracks me up!!

The Others!! Is REALLLLY creepy.

And I haven't seen anyone mention Pet Cemetary! My brother's quote under his pic in the yearbook was CHURCH THE CAT LIVES! graemlins/cat.gif

Maybe mine shouldn't count, because I have some extenuating circumstances. I write horror on the side, and for me it's tought to get carried away by a genre movie. I mean, I watch someone's guts get ripped out in the film, and my first thought is usually, "That many entrails in that tiny kid? Boy, is the director desperate..."

I do, however, have one films that scares me: TRIUMPH OF THE WILL. Leni Riefenstahl's documentary about the annual Nazi conference at Nuremberg is a seductive piece of work that if you watch it without being careful, you find yourself tapping along with the marches and being swayed by the rhythm of the speeches which she shot so loveingly. As you start to feel for these SOBs despite yourself, allowing them to push your buttons even though they'd go on from the events filmed and engage in terror and genocide at a scale unequaled since, it's at that point that you suddenly realize things about the nature of evil that no horror film can ever convey.

For all there is to be scared by vampires, werewolves, zombies and slashers, there's nothing half as scarry as watching ordinary men putting on brown shirts with red armbands in order to commit horrific acts and realizing that there's not that much to separate the two of you...
