In my 3 disc player I've got a CD-R I made of my favorite Beatles and Bon Jovi songs, one of Aerosmith songs, and Rooney's self-titled debut CD.

Of the 3, I've been listening to Rooney almost daily since I bought it. They are one awesome band! I love "If It Were Up To Me".

Wow...another Moodies fan! Cool! They are my second favorite band, too, BeatleMom64! Moving Mountains is a pretty good album (I got that one when I saw the Moodies two years ago.) And--like you--often times, if it's not the Beatles in my player, it's the MBs!

But I did see the guys when they played at the Viejas Outlet Center, two (or so) years ago. I want to definatly get tickets the next time they play this area. They are sooooo good!!!

Very cool we have many Moody fans over here. Yes lately it has been either The Beatles, solo and as group or The Moody Blues, solo and as a group. But I just returned from my vacation in Yugoslavia and it is lots of Yugoslavian music I am listening to now.

Sitting room...A freebie CD from UNCUT Magazine, 'Inspired by the Byrds' Really good stuff on it, I may never have listened to the likes of the Cosmic Rough Riders otherwise but went right out and bought their new album next day! Kitchen....A boot of Pauls Dublin concert this year,(thanks Damo!!) and in my car: Peasants Pigs and Astronauts, Kula Shaker, one of the truly great albums of ALL time.

I just realised something, I am a middle aged granny, and all the music I am listening to this year was made within the past 5 years!! My granny would never have bought anything from my era of music when she was the age I am now. See how good listening to the Beatles is for your musical taste? Listen up kids, it IS cool to be a Beatles Fan, it means you will ALWAYS appreciate good music, as this thread clearly demonstrates, I am SO proud of you all!

Today I bought a new CD of Tchaikovsky's "1812 Overture", performed by Erich Kunzel and the Cincinnati Pops Orchestra, Kiev Symphony Chorus, and the Greater Cincinnati Children's Choir.

The "1812" is one of my all-time favorite classical pieces (maybe my #1 fave!!) and this new version adds a choral part in places.

I have heard many versions (and owned a few) of the "1812" and this is BY FAR the SINGLE GREATEST VERSION I have EVER heard of this piece!! It actually moved me to tears toward the end. graemlins/cry2.gif

"2nd To None" by Elvis Presley.

Ya know, I bought this last year when it first came out, but I've been so busy that I only opened the shrinkwrap on this for the very first time this past Sunday! Inside, I found one of those scratch-and-win game pieces, so I scratched it and guess what? I won a free Elvis CD!! http://www.beatlelinks.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/clap2.gif

Trouble is, I had to have the winning game piece mailed back to RCA Records postmarked no later than April 30th to claim my prize!!

Oh my gosh, Dave! Congratulations on winning (ha ha)...oh, man, what a MAJOR maxi-bummer!!! Oh, but it is a good album, isn't it??? I used to be a DIE-HARD Elvis fan (discovered him at age 3 or so, and I admit that I still do like him a lot), before I discovered (at that great age of 9) that the Beatles existed, then they became my main love. When the 1 and 2 Elvis albums came out, I bought them right away (to replace all of my Elvis albums that my mother--who hates Elvis--gave to a thrift shop once I discovered the Beatles...and she did all of that--back then--without telling me!) (*sigh*--BeatleChick sobs--*oh, my poor long-gone Elvis albums...!!!*) But, the good thing is that most of what was on those albums that were so cruelly taken from me, is on the new compilation cds, so it's almost like having them (my long gone albums) back....

Anyway...good album, ya??? And, oh man, I am so sorry for such a bogus deal about the winning game piece! Oh wow, Dave, I feel your pain!!! <<big hug>>

I always love to see film of Monk playing. His body language is incredibly deceptive. He looks as if he's going to swoop on a particular area of the keyboard, but before you know it his hand's pecking or hammering at somewhere entirely different.

Oh my gosh! I know! Isn't Monk a kick to watch (and man, is he great to listen, too)! I love him! I love trying to guess where he's going to go and always being surprised! He's one of my faves! Have you seen film of him "dancing" yet??? Where he steps away from the piano for a few minutes and just grooves?! It's as unique as his way of playing and it is quite a trip to watch!!!!

So, you like Jimmie Rodgers too?! Oh my gosh! He's great! I was brought up hearing both Monk and Jimmie, Beatles and so many other things, so I have a pretty wide range of musical tastes! Seems like you do, too! You seem to know some pretty good stuff there, Pete! You must have a pretty diverse collection, like I do!

By coincidence I've just bought my son a uke for his sixth birthday. He can pick out a few little tunes on mandolin, but no way can his small hamds hold down a chord, plus my fiddle playing's so dreadful I can't lead him that way, ao I thought a uke would be ideal. Thanks to your mention I found your father's website and enjoyed rummaging through it. He's clearly a man who combines a deep love and appreciation of music with a quirky approach.

Yup, I've seen film of Monk's bizarre twirls. I have the excellent documentary about Monk, Straight, No Chaser on VHS (must look for it on DVD), in which you see that odd but wondrous man going his scary, confounding, inpsiring way.

I do have an odd record collection, which has been growing since the 60s. I stopped counting the vinyl LPs at around 3,000 in the late 70s, and have amassed heck knows how many LPs and CDs since.

My tastes are diverse. I've always been a rock/pop fan, but I had a moment of revelation when I first heard Flatt and Scruggs' Foggy Mountain Breakdown in the late 60s. That led me from being a guitar player to being a banjo and mandolin picker, and thereby to folk festivals where my tastes expanded further to include British Isles folk and loads of other stuff. In the early 70s I got into session playing (especially for TV) and backing American country artists on visits to the UK. Some of the the guys I met on sessions introduced me to jazz, and explained it to me! I wish I'd had your musical education: I would have got there much earlier.

OOh...blues??? I can help, Sir M!!! Some essentials:

Robert Johnson--King of the Delta Blues Singers and/or
Robert Johnson the Complete Recordings

Blues Masters--The Very Best of Elmore James

Howlin' Wolf--Best of

Muddy Waters--His Best: 1947 to 1955 OR the newly released Martin Scorsese Presents The Blues: Muddy Waters (that has his best work on it, too!)

Plus, cds by Sonny Terry and Brownie McGhee, Little Walter, Leadbelly, and Son House are necessary to have....these guys are also some of the best!!!

Elmore, Robert, Wolf and Muddy, Sonny and Brownie, Walter, Leadbelly, and Son are some more of the blues essentials if you are looking to expand your collection! Those guys are blues gods!!!

And, as for "newer" blues (50's, 60's, onward) or "rock blues"--I'd recommend albums by:

The Yardbirds
John Mayall's Blues Breakers
and albums by Keb Mo--he's good! He does the blues the way it used to be done! Ooh...and Taj Mahal too! He's another great "new" blues cat!

Those are just a few of the "newer" blues artists that are worth their salt (there's a few more, but...)!

Anyway....hope that helps!

Any more questions about the blues, feel free to PM me!

In my player now:

Yardbirds--BBC Sessions (Smokestack Lightnin' playing right now!)

Alanis is great, shame Jagged Little Pill threw such a large shadow over anything she did after that album. One of the unfair deals some artists are given, that they just get known for one album, or even one song. Many people don't get a chance to follow how an artist devolps him or herself. Often tho not always, the follow up albums are different and the artists are just getting better. Rememember I said not always.

To get back to the question, I can't.. I was just listening to an lp, not an cd and it doesn't fit in my cd player. If you must know however it was "Days Of Future Passed" by The Moody Blues. Yes that's the debut album with "Nights In White Satin" so some of you older people might remember, also in the U.S. they had a hit in the 80's with "Your Wildest Dreams", but all of there work is great, save from a few songs.

A lot of times an artist's first album is an accumulation of several years of songwriting and the best of the best gets picked for inclusion and many times the first album is the best, but not always.

It's a funny coincidence you're talking about Bob Dylan because my recently bought Blood On The Tracks is in my cd player. It's a fantastic album, I specially like Simple Twist Of Fate. I also bought Highway 61.....but I like Blood... better

I read that was George's favorite Dylan album, too! You are in good company...Bob and George!!

Okay, I have been listening to So Called Chaos and Under Rug Swept, but today, yes....I change for Bob! http://www.beatlelinks.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/biggrin.gif

I've just got Bob's World Gone Wrong which is a pretty decent covers album, not his best work by a long way but it only cost me £3.99 so can't complain.HMV in the UK has a big sale on right now and has all Bobs albums at around the same price so if you are curious go check him out.You won't regret it!! http://www.beatlelinks.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif

I've been listening to Paul Simon (Live Rhymin'), James Taylor (his latest Greatest Hits collection), Rod Stewart (Never A Dull Moment) and Jim Croce (just got his 50th Anniversary Collection)--a bunch of blasts from the past that I just got on cd, had 'em on vinyl when they came out.
Gonna try Dark ISide of the Moon again, I keep thinking I SHOULD like Pink Floyd, but have a hard time getting started. I also keep trying to get into Peter Gabriel era Genesis, but so far no luck. Maybe I'm trying too hard.
