Just wondering.....
On this board there's a lot of discussion about past en recent past artists. But nowadays there are a lot of young new artists in the charts. Who do you consider a real talent for now or the near future ? and why ?

Is it Shakira, Eminem ? Let me know.

I think Avril Lavigne is extremely gifted.

Can't really say that I listen to a lot of it, or am all that familiar with much of it, but I do think that Norah Jones is incredibly talented (runs in the family)!

Norah Jones rules, and Liz Phair's great too.

Sorry Lenie, I'd have to say Avril is one of my least favorite celebrities ever. She needs to know that she is NOT punk.

Norah Jones and Coldplay. Pretty much nothing else from this decade. Some of the other artist I hear have released tracks in this decade, but come from a different one, so I don't list them. Norah is one extremely talented woman, and Coldplay is one fantastic band. images/icons/smile.gif

I kinda like Pink and No Doubt. Even though i'm not a fan of hers I think Norah Jones has talent.

i cant say i agree with any of the choices listed.norah jones? bleh.all though she seems to have the most talent of the people i will soon to be rambling about. avril lavigne? i agree she is definitly not punk.and IMO definitley not any good. eminem? come on-rap isnt music its just people talking rally fast in rhymes with fake music or "beats" in the background.all hes good for is stirring up controversey.the fact that these people were even considered for the grammys shows what a joke it is nowwadays.shakira oh man -shes another britney and j.lo-good to look at but when they come on the radio -turn it off! there are a few good bands out there-coldplay isnt that bad,the white stripes are really cool rage against the machine rocks but sadly they split up and metallica and nirvana even though the latter dont make any music no more.the funny part is this is the music of my generation-when i get older and turn on the oldies this is what there gonna play eminem, shakira, avril, etc.this is ,sadly the music of today, but to me it will never beat stuff like all the greats like the beatles(duh) pink floyd, who, led zep, elvis, dylan and all the rock standards.

wow. my longest post yet.im feeling passionate today.....imma go take a nap

Although I agree with your views on Norah Jones and Avril Lavigne I don't agree with you when you say that the above acts are a fair description of the acts of today. They are the pop chart acts of the day but look beyond that and you will find a lot of great music which in many cases is criminally ignored because they are not given airplay, promotion etc...
Although you are right to list some great bands from the past, music of all generations has great bands and there always will be great music around. graemlins/smile1.gif

[/QB]<font size="2" face="Tahoma, Arial, sans-serif">EXACTLY. i think everyone here knows how i feel about anyone who gets played on top 40 radio or MTV. but i'll say it again..

(first of all liz phair has been around for a really long time and has now completley sold her soul, and body, just to sell more records. very very sad)

The Shins are a really promising band. They have a Beach Boys-y sound. Everyone has been talking about the Yeah Yeah Yeahs. i personally don't like them but that whole NYC scene revival is really coming back, which started, of course, with the Strokes.

i think jack white of the white stripes is evolving into the lennon/mccartney of today (yes, he is just one person but he writes so many different types of songs).

i'm a big radiohead fan as well. they are constantly redefining rock. yes, they've been around for a while too, but not enough can be said of how influential they will be in the future (and now for that matter).

avril levigne...you ought to be ashamed of yourself. images/icons/wink.gif

I understand. i was only listing the acts already mentioned, and the most popular ones to prove my point-this is the music that will be remembered.while the bands that are good and "criminally ignored" as you say are forgotten by the general public and radio stations, because record companies and the general public only listen to what they think is cool and what everyone else is listening to ,therefore ignoring the good stuff.thats one thing that you gotta find fasciating about the beatles-they were bigger then any band now or then and yet they still made awesome music.so i guess the public doesnt always miss the good stuff.

Although not exactly current I still think REM and U2 make great music.
More modern I think Coldplay,Blur(Their new album is a great return to form), and I think people should check out a band called The Thorns.
Harmonies to die for!

I don't agree with many of the choices that have been listed above. Coldplay for example are a boring, overrated, whiny whiny mainstream band. I never got U2 or why they were so popular and the same with Radiohead. The White Stripes are into that stupid "7O's garage rock" revival(recycle) thing, the unkempt hair, sideburns etc. There is nothing new there that deserves to be credited. It seems that the music press(NME, Q, Mojo etc) are united in trying to ram these groups down our throats but I don't see their appeal. Many other groups have been overlooked because they don't belong to a mainstream label or play at some trendy festival.

I think that Vanessa Carlton could have a big future as could Norah Jones and REM are still good. My favourite "contemporary" band are They Might Be Giants, but they seldom receive credit or recognition for their work.

That's my two cents.

Um, just wondering, but is there anyone else who NEVER listens to any 21st century music?? I'm not even familiar with half of the artists mentioned... my friends talk about some of them, but I've sort of stereotyped all modern music as being trash, and I never listen to any of it... I know some of it is probably pretty good, but I'd rather stick with the fifties and sixties.

I like a number of current artists, though I seem to have difficulty breaking away from the four person band thing, so consequently I am a big fan of U2 and Coldplay...but I also like alot of individual Canadian artists too, David Usher and Sam Roberts among them.

But really there is bad music in every era...but it is so easy to get lulled into thinking that all music in the 60's was great esp when you listen to an oldies station...I've often asked my Mum "why does does almost all 60's music sound so much better than alot of music today" and she always says very firmly that there was bad music in the 60's too. So then as now there is both good music and bad!

I don't chose to listen to 21st Century music on my own...but I do get to hear it. When I'm in the car with my siblings or someone, they'll have one to radio to a current station. That's when I hear the new stuff. A lot of it is crap. I love music from the 50's, 60's, 70's (and even some songs before that), but of course, not all of that was great either. There are songs I don't like/do like from every era. But I feel music (at least on the radio) is at an all-time low now and has been for awhile. There may be a good song that comes on every now and again, but nothing that's really worth rushing out to buy. That's my take on this. I find myself listening to music that makes me happy, which is the 50's, 60's, and 70's stuff (and no, not just the Beatles either). images/icons/smile.gif

That's my two cents.<font size="2" face="Tahoma, Arial, sans-serif">please, how is norah jones anything different from a contemporary bette midler or barbara steisand? TMBG get a lot of credit in the sites and mags i read, i guess you're reading the wrong stuff.

saying you don't get why a band is popular isn't really a reason for not appreciating their talent. what is not innovative about radiohead, for instance? and really, thing have gone in a cycle since the beginning of time, what do you expect to happen in style and music?

i notice you didn't mention The Shins. or how about the ever-present though virtually ignored by mainstream press indie faves, Yo La Tengo. or belle & sebastian. doesn't anyone here like Cat Power? what about Smog or the magnetic fields? i've never seen anyone mention one of the biggest indie bands from the 90s, Pavement. so there you go Clark, the music press is not ramming these bands down your throat. now tell me what you think of them. images/icons/smile.gif

i do agree with you about coldplay and U2 though images/icons/smile.gif

We just got to see Norah Jones and she's the modern one for me. She is so talented, and seems so, so nice. Her voice is distinctive, so maybe some may not care for it, like some folks don't care for Joni Mitchell. But I find it so sensual, as do so many other folks.

She played several types of music at the show and in each genre she displayed amazing talent. She went into country, bluegrass, bluesy rock, just amazing. Her band is amazing, too.

i like Good Charlotte they're pretty good i heard them do a cover of A Hard Day's Night on the internet, and it was good. also i heard on tv that the best compliment theyve had was that they're the beatles of today. Also i like Sum 41 too.

If I am switching between radio stations I will usually stop to listen to Coldplay. I will likewise do the same for Train. Both bands worth watching out for.

The White Stripes are great - very talented
I also love Good Charlotte, Sum 41, Foo Fighters, and AFI
I can't stand Avril. Besides the fact that she thinks she's punk, I just never really liked any of her music at all.

-just my opinion

I don't really care for most of the female singers, but like you said Norah's voice is so different and she's funny too images/icons/smile.gif
Hearing her perform live was awesome (though for a moment I thought you went to the concert only to see Adam, her so talented bass guitar player images/icons/wink.gif )

Jason Mraz is awesome. I don't know if any of you have heard "The Remedy (I Won't Worry)" but it's one of the best songs of 2003. The rest of his debut album, Waiting for My Rocket to Come, is good too.

have you heard anything from radiohead or the white stripes' new albums?

Lately, I've been getting into this kind of music. Jason, Jack Johnson, and John Mayer have all been on my computer jukebox recently.
