NEW YORK - Here they are now, entertaining us — or at least entertaining VH1, which named Nirvana's "Smells Like Teen Spirit" the greatest song of the past quarter-century. The Seattle band's groundbreaking grunge anthem is No. 1 on VH1's list of the "100 Greatest Songs of the Past 25 Years."
The whole countdown will air over five nights, starting at 10 p.m. EDT Monday on the video music channel. The series will feature clips of videos and performances by the artists along with interviews from musicians and celebrities discussing why the songs matter.
Of "Smells Like Teen Spirit," Guns N' Roses bassist Duff McKagan said: "That was really a breakthrough for a great scene that had been going on for a long time up in Seattle. And it was kind of another victory, I think, for a misunderstood music, you know. The dam broke when 'Teen Spirit' came out."
While no one performer or group dominated the countdown, which was chosen by a panel of VH1 executives, several had two songs featured.
Michael Jackson had the second-highest song, "Billie Jean," and was at No. 40 with "Beat It." Eminem reached No. 4 with "Lose Yourself," while his "My Name Is" was No. 85. Madonna's "Like a Virgin" was No. 10 and her "Ray of Light" was No. 100.
Rounding out the top 10 were "Sweet Child O' Mine" by Guns N' Roses, "One" by U2, "Walk This Way" by Run-D.M.C., "When Doves Cry" by Prince, "I Will Always Love You" by Whitney Houston and "Every Breath You Take" by The Police.
In May 2001, VH1 picked the 100 greatest videos of all time; Jackson's "Thriller," a 17-minute mini-movie, was No. 1, but it didn't even make the list this time.

What? I don't think it's that good.
My friend, who is a huge Nirvana-fan, said, that she doesn't like Smells Like Teen Spirit, because it's so overplayed and overrated.

All right, as much as I love Nirvana and their music, it's not the best song in a quarter-century. I mean, a song about angst and depression is the best? Why not a song about peace or had a profound impact on our society, something that everyone knows.

Depends on the age range you're talking about too. I know that Nirvana had a HUGE impact on my friends who are 10-15 years younger than I am and virtually NO impact on people my age. I bet not more than one or two of my friends who are my age could even sing one line of it. Oh well, at least it's a better choice than "Sweet Child O Mine" (BLECH!!!!!) or "I-E-I-E-I Will Always Love Youuuuuuuuuuuuuu" (double BLECH!).

Yes, Nirvana had an impact in music, but the best? Not a chance! Yeah, a lot of people in my age range really like the song (when it came out--almost ten years ago now), but I didn't really care for it.

Puh-leeease! Nirvana? "Smells Like Teen Spirit"? Is that they best they could come up with? 25 years of music, and the best song out of all of those 25 years is "Smells Like Teen Spirit"? Good grief...What is this world coming to?!?

I never understand those countdowns. I don't think you can judge the last 25 years because the last ten have yet to show exactly what their long term impact is.

I agree with them, it's an influential song and Nirvana rules, so it does deserve the top spot.
Did you really think any of the Beatles' solo work would make it (besides Lennon at 72)?

That said, I can't stand Nirvana at all anyway, and I'm with Rell when she says it didn't make much of an impact on people our age. (Rell and I are in the same general age area.) But I also admit that I don't like very much of the music of the past 25 years anyway...give me the oldies anytime! images/icons/smile.gif

I like Nirvana...
Spirit is a good song, powerfull and awesome and I love that chorus: "Hello hello hello how low..."
However that's not the best song of the band, from a personal point of view I think that song has to be "Come as you are" or "On a plain".
I really couldn't say if Nirvana made the best song of the past 25 years because there are a lot of good songs written mostly by One Hit Wonders but I'm sure that Kurt's band is the best one after The Beatles.
People say that Nirvana is overrated and overplayed. Ok, no one denies that but aren't the Stones and even The Beatles overrated and overplayed too?
You could say "Hey cmon, Beatles are Beatles, there's no comparation" Agreed too but I don't understand people anyways, when you tell them about the best bands after The Beatles they always look for an excuse to disqualify.
If those bands are overrated they ignore them.
If those bands were an influence they inmediatly say that the Beatles were a bigger influence,
If those bands did drugs or suicide they invoke to the holy spirit to reject them like
cowardly rats without force to stand their pains.
I wonder if The Beatles never did drugs and adultery (John and George, oh yes, even the one who sang Hari Krishna) when they were the biggest influence in the world.
So I think that makes no sense when people talk bad things about a band of a musician if they don't base their comments on musical terms.

While I like the grunge sound of it sometimes, when I'm in the mood for it, I never really got what he was saying over the screaming. So, here's the lyrics, just in case others wondered too:
Smells Like Teen Spirit
Nirvana
Load up on guns and bring your friends
It's fun to lose and to pretend
She's over bored and self assured
Oh no, I know a dirty word
Hello, hello, hello, how low
I'm worse at what I do best
And for this gift I feel blessed
Our little group has always been (tribe)
And always will until the end
Hello, hello, hello, how low
And I forget just why I taste
Oh yeah, I guess it makes me smile
I found it hard, it was hard to find
Oh well, whatever, nevermind
hello, hello, hello, how low
With the lights out it's less dangerous
Here we are now, entertain us
I feel stupid and contagious
A mulatto
An albino
A mosquito
My Libido
Yay, a denial
Oh yeah! Poetry...sheer poetry! graemlins/images/icons/rolleyes.gif

Oh Nancy, life isn't a pretty poem either.
If I had to reject a band because their sad and pessimistic lyrics the only artist that I would like was Barny or maybe the Teletubbies.

Oh yeah! Poetry...sheer poetry! graemlins/images/icons/rolleyes.gif <font size="2" face="Tahoma, Arial, sans-serif">The specific lyrics I pointed out ARE poetry. The first one came 5 years before Paul wrote "I go back so far, I'm in front of me." And 10 years before "Any Road" was released ("It's so far out the way out is in"). I think that says a lot.
The second verse was basically how Kurt was feeling at the time. I read somewhere that Kurt is a coward for committing suicide, leaving a wife and child behind. First off, he probably didn't commit suicide, check out www.cobaincase.com (http://www.cobaincase.com) and there's a lot of evidence that proves it. And that's not cowardly. It takes guts to leave it all behind. If he did commit suicide (I won't rule that out entirely), I'm sure it took a lot of thinking to come to a decision.
He was the biggest genius in the 90s music scene (and no, I'm not forgetting Paul, Bob, Liam and Noel, etc.). He spoke to a generation, for a comparison, he was not unlike John Lennon in the late 1960s.

Someone who was so wasted on drugs that can only manage to write about violence, self-loathing and pity. These lyrics remind me of when I read "The Bell Jar" by Sylvia Plath when I was 13. And that traumatized me for quite a while. Don't misunderstand. I'm hardly narrow-minded about this; I understand teenage angst. I've been there and hope to get my own daughter through it unscathed. For me, those were the worst years of my life that I'd rather not go into. I seriously doubt my own daughter would find comfort in song such as this. I mean, it's already an old song anyway. But, whatever outlet she chooses, we'll just have to cross that bridge when we get there.
And RingoRama, I recently saw a biography on Kurt's life (a few months ago). His bandmates and friends clearly stated, without a doubt, that he was a very troubled, depressed individual..throughout his whole life. Running away from his troubled homelife, living under bridges in Portland(?). I seem to recall that Kurt had left a suicide note and had attempted the act once before he finally succeeded. Thinking about it now, maybe the note was from a previous failed attempt. Not sure.
On a lighter note, I was impressed by the fact that Kurt was a big Beatle fan. images/icons/smile.gif

smells like teen spirt is an awsome song one of my fave songs (considering Nirvana is one of my fave bands) but i mean if any Nirvana song that should been #1 on that list it should have been "Lithium" that song is awsome or even "come as you are"or an even awsomer somg "rape me"Nivrana really symbloys the way most of us have felt at one time or antoher through theyre lyrics and thats why they were as sucessful as the were-and still are awsome band-and glad that they are # 1 but i think that vh1 should have thought this one out a little more and should have made a better song sellection but i mean thats how i feel im not really up to date on the past 25 years but you know what i mean ?!

Smells Like Nirvana
Al Yankovic
What is this song all about?
Can't figure any lyrics out
How do the words to it go?
I wish you'd tell me I don't know, oh no
don't know, don't know, don't know...
Now I'm mumbling and I'm screaming
And I don't know what I'm singing
Crank the volume, ears are bleeding
I still don't know what I'm singing
Were so loud and inchoerent
Boy this oughta bug your parents
Yeah
It's unintel - ligible
I just can't get it through my skull
It hard to bargle nawdle zouss
With all these marbles in my mouth
Don't know....
Well, we don't sound like Madonna
Here we are now, were Nirvana
Sing distinctly? We don't wanna
Buy our album, were Nirvana
A garage band from Seattle
Well, it sure beats raising cattle
Yeah
And I forgot the next verse
Oh Well, I guess it pays to rehearse
The lyric sheet's so hard to find
What are the words, Oh Nevermind
Don't Know...
Well I'm yelling and were playing
But I don't know what I'm saying
What's the message I'm conveying?
Can you tell me what I'm saying?
So have you got some idea?
Didn't think so - well I'll see ya
Sayonara, sayonara
Ayonawa, odinawa
Odinawa, yodinya
Yaddayadda, yaaahyaaah
Ayaaaaaaah!
Thank you, Weird Al.
You gave a silly song what it needed.

All I know is that there were a million other songs that were relesed in the past 25 years that could blow Nirvana's song away! They are really undeserving of the title "best song of the past 25 years"!

The Sex Pistols were Punk at its most raw. They were all attitude. Today's Punk is watered down and ready for mass acceptence. Green Day and Avril Lavine may be popular but they lack the sheer brutish malevolence of the Pistols. Johnny Rotten spat out lyrics with his anger lurking behind each word. Never seeming to care if the songs were catchy enough, he used the songs to get his point across.
By comparison Avril Lavine uses too many hooks in her writing.

When you really think about it though, when you're a teenager, age 30 seems to be very old and yet, when you reach that age, it doesn't seem so old anymore. And Magill's right, (and so is John when he said "age is just a state of mind one of his songs off of his Anthology). My mind went blank! Alzheimer's is settling in early! images/icons/smile.gif

The genre of the bands you listed, D-HaRrIsOnSgUrl28, are grunge (like Nirvana was), not punk. Susan's right. If it weren't for pioneers like Sid Vicious, Joey Ramone, Joe Strummer & Johnny Rotten, there'd be no Nirvana, GC, Blink182, etc. It'd like putting The Backstreet Boys in the same class as GC. graemlins/laugh2.gif YIKES!

Why is this any different from any other kind of writing? I can't imagine that a teacher would accept a paper written like that!
I'm sorry, I didn't mean to take this topic off onto a tangent...but it's one of my real pet peeves...and as an editor, I can also tell you that if I received any submission to my zine that wasn't in reasonably coherent English, I wouldn't even bother to read it. It would rate an instantaneous rejection letter.

Speaking of punk bands nobody has mentioned Bad Brains, DRI, Black Flag or The Dead Kennedys or Meat Puppets. These are bands that also inspired Kurt Cobain. Nirvana signified a return to real guitar music in the early 90's. But as far as Smells Like Teen Spirit being the best of the last 25 years, hell it's not even the best song in the Nirvana catalog. By the way Just Like Starting Over checked in at #72 on this list. But between Billie Jean and Smells Like Teen Spirit give me Nirvana any day of the week.

Not to mention the early 90s with the advent of bands like Dream Theater, that not only play metal but incorporate amazing guitar solos with experimental sounds, ideas, and great vocals considering the common metal band is not revered for their main vocalists sound and skill.

It would be nice if they qualified their choice with "the greatest ROCK song of the past 25 years." (I looked but didn't see that qualifier; if I missed it, please point it out to me.) Let us not forget that there are a few other genres of music out there (and I'm not talking about rap and country, either). I don't advocate trying to decide between, say, a show tune and a rock song--you know the old apples vs. oranges impossibility--but I scoff at the notion that rock is the ONLY genre that produces good music.

Punk wouldn't be around if it weren't for bands like the Ramones, and the Sex Pistols. The kind of "punk" (aka pop) you are into won't be remembered in 25 years from now that is for sure. They are not against any system, they are just as manufactured as anyone else in the music biz these days.
I like the White Stripes (since when are they punk?!?!?), but I am also entitled not to like "your" kind of music, and just because I don't like it doesn't make me "old". I am also entitled to my opinions. I happen to like real punk, with a real message, not because they spike their hair and have a tattoo sleeve. Being that I'm bored, I'll treat you to my thrilling commentary on the Top 100... (Go here (http://www.vh1.com) to see the songs in question, you'll have to jump a hyperlink or two)
100. I hate this. This is one of her worst songs, the vocals suck and the video is stupid.
99. I love Norah Jones, and this is a cool song.
98. Catchy, but nothing I would listen to regularly.
97. I love Devo, and when you know the story behind the song, this song's even funnier. Love it.
96. It's a guilty pleasure.
95. With a title like that, who can resist? Nice song.
94. A teen anthem. Love it.
93. I absolutely love this song. NIN is an awesome singer-songwriter, this is probably one of my favorite songs of the 90s. It's not for kids, but it's a hell of a song.
92. I plead the 5th.
91. Ditto.
90. I was young when I first heard it, didn't know what it was about...when I realized... graemlins/sssh.gif
89. Pat's cool, and this is a cool song.
88. This is a great song, they couldn't have done this one better.
87. Great harmonies. One of Moon's last songs, he does awesome on it.
86. Great song...for me to poop on. (I love that sock puppet dog.) I know it's got a good message, but it's boring.
85. Cool song, not a fan of him but his singles are ok.
84. This song (and band) are excellent.
83. Nothing more than a charity single to me...good intentions, ok melody, but nothing special.
82. I love this song!!
81. Another guilty pleasure..."I'm sorry Mrs. Jackson...I am for REEEEEAAAAAAALLLLLLLL!" Cool video, with all the animals.
80. Can't stand the band or the song.
79. Yet another guilty pleasure...I mostly like it for the video (Beyonce graemlins/inlove1.gif graemlins/inlove2.gif )
78. Good song.
77. Another guilty pleasure..."Is it worth it? Let me work it..."
76. AWESOME song. One of the best on the list.
75. Ditto. Beyond ditto. I love this song.
74. Eh...not a big fan.
73. I like the story behind it, but otherwise bleh.
72. Of course I love it images/icons/smile.gif
71. Hate DMB, hate this song.
70. Annoying as crap.
69. Not awful...not great.
68. Overrated, simple...annoying.
67. Pretty good song.
66. Nah, not a fan.
65. I think it's pretty cool...I always laugh when I hear that girl say "I am getting so hot, I'm gonna take my clothes off." It sounds funny, even though the ladies say it to me every night images/icons/wink.gif
64. Nice power pop tune.
63. I love this one.
62. Love the Pretenders...good song.
61. Can't stand the band, enjoy the song...just a little...
60. Repetitive...but good riffs.
59. Not a fan of this guy at all.
58. Doesn't even sample a good song...so why is it so popular?
57. Nice sentiments, but not a favorite of mine.
56. She's pretty cool. The song's nice too.
55. Don't like Talking Heads at all.
54. Good song...catchy.
53. Overrated.
52. Ok.
51. Can't stand the artist or the song.
50. He's done better songs, why didn't they use "Fly Away"?
49. Don't like the band or song at all.
48. Ditto.
47. Ditto.
46. Awesome bass riff, great collaboration by two of my favorites.
45. Annoying and overrated.
44. I can't understand why this song is still popular, I never really liked it.
43. They're pretty cool, I like this song.

20. Nah.
19. Not bad.
18. I kinda like it, it's too long though.
17. Not bad.
16. Love it.
15. Ok song. I think the band's pretty overrated.
14. The artist annoys me, and the song's pretty stupid.
13. They're awesome. RIP Left-Eye.
12. She's awesome too.
11. One of the most overrated bands and songs in history.
10. Compared to #100, this song is good.
9. I like it, but nothing special. Personally I prefer #90.
8. I loathe this song.
7. He still annoys me, but this song's better than the last one of his on here.
6. Very good version of a nice song.
5. Not as good as their first song on the list.
4. Not as bad as you'd think.
3. I don't like it that much.
2. Ditto.
1. Awesome song, deserves the top spot.

5. Move "One" to #1 and it's still the better one! images/icons/grin.gif
4. Take an 8 mile hike, Senor M&M! Don't let the hand that melts your sorry butt hit you on your way out!
3. They have GOT to be kidding! Puhleeeaze! graemlins/laugh2.gif
2. Ok. Not a real fan, but he was undeniably popular (I may have even liked him in the '80's, but you can't make me admit it! Nuh-uh! graemlins/shakehead4.gif )..but I know he's done better songs than this idiotic tune. HOOOO!

Yeah. Even VH1, which usually lets most language slide, had to change the subtitles to "I want to #?%! you like an animal."
I still love this song, all the industrial sounds. It's pretty awesome, but, needless to say, I wouldn't listen to it with a kid in the room.

I actually read your whole list! We don't have all the same favorites, but we certainly loathe the same songs! images/icons/smile.gif
Actually, I don't really think more than a handful of those songs deserve this title ("Baby One More Time", with that lovely manufactured vocal? I don't think so....), but VH1 has always had trouble separating an artist's music from their image. Hazard of a visual medium, I guess.

Yeah--there was an SNL skit about a debate show from around the time MTV started, and the question was "Is MTV good or bad? We'll hear from two musicians with opposing views." And then you see one really ugly musician and a good-looking one.
Image has something to do with music, but not nearly as much as actual music.

As interesting as the strain this topic has taken isn't, when are we going to go back to the discussion on the topic of this thread? No matter what your feelings are on the way she types no one deserves to be ripped apart for it.
Back to the topic:
I'm confused as to how they judged who made this list because there are songs that are way up there on the list that are completely beyond me. Isn't "I will always love you" in the top ten? That song is a cover song and I don't see the effect that song had besides inspiring more people to sing with horrible vowel sounds "IIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIeeeeeeeeeIIIIIIIIIII will always lahve yooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooouu"
If your going to hold onto a vowel at least make it sound pretty.

JohnnaLynn, etal..I think you're reading way more into this than necessary. First of all, many of us did try to convey to DHarissongurl to tone down the abbreviations, acronyms, whatever..that it confused many here. Particulary those from other countries, I reckon. It just made it difficult for most here to read her posts. Perhaps if you felt so strongly about how she was being "mistreated" by everyone, then you could have PM'd her yourself and took her under your wing. And maybe I could have done the same if I felt it would have done any good. She didn't take even the slightest subtle hints to even our outright requests urging her to please write clear and concisely. She just wasn't getting it. She even took the time to add to her sig line a little key of what everything meant. I thought that was quite a rebellious, in-your-face act right there. Secondly, you're definitely reading too much into Rell's "quirky" thread. I'm sure that's not what she had meant when she had started it. We all have pet peeves and this was one of hers. And she was wondering if others had felt the same. Working in Corporate business America, it's a constant thing we have to deal with. Poor grammar, punctuation, spelling, etc. Believe me, if Rell started that only to make a "dig" at DHarrisongurl, she wouldn't have been subtle about it. I've picked up on the kind of person she is over the year I've been here, and she's not like that anyway. I prefer to give people the benefit of the doubt before I accuse anyone of poor behaviour. Perhaps you should do the same.

You know, I was only trying to suggest something positive, in order to help out newbies, encourage dialog, discourage tension, and help out the mods. I wasn't "overreacting" to anything; I haven't even read whatever thread is going on about Rell and her grammatical corrections (?). All I was saying was that I'd like to help. And, yes; I think that multiple people laying into DH for her spelling was just too harsh. Who here has never been young and headstrong? I know I'm guilty as charged.
This is the second time I've been optimistic enough to try throwing out some ideas and opinions on a more serious subject, only to be dressed down by some none-too-friendly moderator. I think it's time for me to stick to, "How's the weather where you are?" threads exclusively. Lesson learned. images/icons/frown.gif

I was only trying to shed some light on the situation and to defend some of the more seasoned members. Yes, I agree it did get heated. But it was on both sides. And yes, sadly it did get to the point of bickering. I reckon if she was clever enough to come up with those commonly used chat room acronyms..(Gawd, I hate that word! My company uses acronyms for EVERYTHING! But, that's another thread in the making, perhaps..UGH!)..but, I'm sure she also knew proper English. You have a good idea in perhaps having a mentorship program here for those who are having trouble communicating with other board members. It may be something to consider. We'll make Sandra the Chairperson of the program images/icons/wink.gif . She is, as stated, very diplomatic and is someone I look up to, as well. I'm more the type that tends to shoot first and check for bodies later...which more often than not gets me in trouble. But, hey. I try to restrain these typing fingers of mine in times of conflict. We should all be more Sandra-like. images/icons/smile.gif

and just shoot it off without being considerate. (I try to be honest about my faults, which is why I'm admitting them here.) When I post here, though, I do try to have more empathy. I think that's truly the key -- if you want to persuade someone to do something, you have to look at it from their point of view and come up with reasons why the change would benefit them. For instance, with the odd spelling, someone could have privately told the person that using proper English would have made her posts clearer to a lot of people and helped her improve her writing skills for when she enters the work force. We have members here from different countries, backgrounds, and different generations, so it's not always easy to put yourself in someone else's shoes. It's still worth doing, though, because you can learn something that way. images/icons/smile.gif
Oh, and in regard to the program--I'm willing to help people if they'd like my advice. Feel free to e-mail or PM me, and I'll respond as soon as I can.

For the record, I did have a bit of private correspondence going with her off the forums -- she tried submitting something to Rooftop as well, and that was as poorly written as any post she ever made here on these forums, full of the same abbreviations and misspellings and grammatical errors -- in a story! And in that case, she also disregarded my clearly posted guidelines regarding format of submissions, ignored all the things I ask of people who submit to me, and then said I was "uptight" because I sent her a rejection letter. A GENTLE rejection letter -- I told her that the story as written did not suit my needs and would need quite a bit of cleaning up before it would be acceptable. I did NOT berate her in any way -- it is not my habit to ridicule people whose stories I do not accept -- rather, I just say that the story does not meet Rooftop's needs and leave it at that.
Additionally, I do know that at least one other member had an IM correspondence going with her in which she pointed out that it might behoove her to try and write in real English on the forums. She too was rebuffed.
I don't think anyone was hard on her here -- all we did was ask her to please write in coherent English. I don't think that is too much to ask.

Oh, just to clarify one little thing....the topic I started about "Quirky Writing Styles" had absolutely NOTHING to do with this entire thing. It had to do with people on another forum who wrote in recognizable ways and it wasn't a bad writing bashing thing at all. Just don't want anybody to have the wrong impression. images/icons/smile.gif
