Who would you rate as the most talented female who WRITES and PERFORMS her own material?
I dig Fiona Apple and Alanis Morsette. Anyone? graemlins/girl2.gif

I like Alanis, too. There's so many I admire. There's Sarah McLaughlin, Lisa Loeb, Carly Simon, Carole King, Gwen Stefani and Cristina Aguilera did a great job on "Beautiful". She did write that one, right? graemlins/lookaround.gif

Carole King

One of my very, very favorite female rock stars is Polly Jean (PJ) Harvey. She's fantastic. She's a songwriter extraoridinare, in my opinion. And I've seen her live. She was exceedingly brilliant. On her one album, she has a song with my Thom Yorke (you know, the Radiohead guy), and its one of those tunes...just gives me goosebumps. He sings it primarily, because she said she wrote the song for him.

A useless fact that I found out only recently was that her birthday is the same day as mine, October 9th...not the same year of course. Pic of Polly:

I really recommend her music, although she's got that John Lennon style of extorting her inner emotional stuff a lot- and that's not for everyone....but still. I recommend her. She's freaking wonderful.

I love Vanessa Carlton. I think she may be better known for featuring with the Counting Crows on their version of "Big Yellow Taxi" but she has an excellent album of her own, "Be Not Nobody" and she had a lot of good songs like "A Thousand Miles", "Ordinary Day" and "Paradise."

What an excellent question!

I vote for Emmylou Harris , but let's not overlook Mary-Chapin Carpenter or Cheryl Wheeler or Carolyn Dawn Johnson or Shelby Lynne...

For attitude, mentality and musical ability - especially for writing 'White Rabbit'
(And for not being in ashamed negation
about anything to do with the 60's) -
Grace Slick (Jefferson Airplane).

For looks - Andrea Corr (The Corrs, logically enough.....Heh, Robbie Williams didn't last a week with her! hahahah! She must have started talking to him about music or something..)

Fave female drummer - Moe Tucker
(Velvet Underground).

For being a true survivor! - Marianne Faithful.
(I don't think she'll be doing any Mars bars adverts in the near future - I highly doubt it.)

For being the fittest 60's chick there was - Patti Boyd. (Always the quiet blokes that pull
the tastiest birds, etc etc...)

For what she's had to put up with - Yoko.

Alanis, Carly Simon, Macy Gray (have you heard her new album?)

And the oddest vote...Lorenna McKennit. Ever heard of her? She rocks!

I love Carole King's music, she helped me get a few singing gigs..well her music did.

I also like Pat Benatar, Norah Jones I don't think they write though.

The Heart sisters are great too.

I'm surprised nobody stood up for Joan Baez yet.
