Out of curiosity, what is the most and least expensive prices for regular unleaded gasoline in the city/region where you live?
Here in Vista, California, the cheapest is $1.47/gal. at Golden State Gasoline on North Santa Fe Dr. The most expensive is $1.98/gal. at Unocal on Escondido Ave. right off of Highway 78 (probably the reason it's so expensive, 'cause it's so near the freeway).
Maybe this thread could be updated every couple of weeks or so, just to give your neighbors an idea of where to find the best deals, as well as who to avoid.
Howzabout where you guys live?

Well...as of right now, the cheapest in the Chicago area is in Itasca at Speedway at Devon and Arlington Heights Rd. ($1.47). Most expensive is at the Irving Park and Pulaski Shell ($1.86). This is a welcome break from about a year or so ago when we had the highest gas prices in the entire US.
There is an actual website devoted to searching for the best/worst Chicago area gas prices (where the above info was from), and it's constantly updated:

Lessee...regular in NY is about $1.47/gal for the cheapest, but I've seen stations here in Manhattan with prices as high as $1.90.
I usually go to New Jersey for gas -- they have fewer state taxes AND all gas stations are FULL-SERVICE, so they pump it for you! In nearby NJ, cheapest is about $1.29, most expensive, about $1.39. So if I'm in NJ to run errands (which I do once or twice a week), I usually fill my tank there.

Gasoline Prices Reach Another Record
04-11-2008 5:03 AM
(San Diego, CA) -- Gasoline prices in San Diego County have hit another record. The average price of a gallon of self-serve regular gasoline reached three-dollars-76-cents this week, erasing the previous record of three-dollars-68-cents set last Friday. Experts say the price increases are a result of steady hikes in the cost of crude.

Also, I just read a new story about Shell's profits being up 25% in the first quarter, mostly due to the rising price of oil. The article was very positively written, as if it's a success story in a time of economic crisis. I realize it's a bit more complicated than this, but if you boil it down doesn't this mean that they are reaping high profits from price gouging you and me?

Gasoline Soars to Over Four Dollars a Gallon
05-23-2008 6:38 AM
(San Diego, CA) -- San Diego motorists are now paying over four dollars a gallon for gasoline. The Auto Club of Southern California says the average price for a gallon of self-serve regular increased nearly four and one-half cents over the past week to just over four dollars. The price is up 13-cents from April and 57-cents from May of 2007. It's the seventh time in the last eight weeks the price has risen to a record high. An Auto Club spokesperson says the reason is the same: spiking crude oil prices that affect the costs of production of gasoline along with the costs of the raw material.

It hit $4.00 around here recently. (I'm glad I'm not in L.A. paying your prices hof). The biggest problem is, that if you are outside of the Northeast or say Chicago, you can't even fall back to public transportation which I gladly would. The cities are laid out specifically for automobile traffic within much of the country and public transportation is minimal if not impossible to efficiently fit the model.

Be lucky you don't live in the UK. Here we're paying £1.18 per litre. Since 1 gallon is 4.546 litres that mean's the UK are paying £5.36 a gallon, or $10. Something like 60%+ of the price we pay on fuel is duty that goes straight into the governments pocket... and then we pay Value Added Tax of 17.5% on top of that again.
We're paying more than double than you in America. Today it cost me £29.60 / $58 to top up my car when it was half empty. If It was the full doozie I'd be looking at about $120 to fill it up completely.

I hear that people are getting so desperate to save money buying gas. Some people are stashing gas now, which is very hazardous. Others are stealing from peoples' cars at night. Meanwhile, I hear that the citizens who live close to the Mexican border in California are driving down to Mexico to fill up their gas for about $2.00 a gallon.
I have heard though that some people who have done that have problems with the gas, and also that sometimes they have to wait in traffic for 2-3 hours to come back across the border.

Harb, I have a question. Has gas been going up as fast in the UK as in the US? Just wondering. I dont know since we dont hear much about the price of foreign gas here on the news.
It's still rising. It's now up to £1.19 a litre for unleaded now (from £1.18 just a few days ago) and the govt. is planning to add yet another 2p to that in increased duty. That's £1.21 a litre, or £5.50 a gallon - $10.
Just remember that when you're complaining about paying $4 a gallon. We're paying more than double you are because our govt. is taxing us through the nose twice. First there's Duty that has to be paid for it and then, on top of that, VAT of 17.5% is paid on top. About 66% of the money we spend on fuel in the UK is nothing but govt. taxes.
And people are getting sick of it. There have been so many protests and go-slows across the country and petrol tankers refusing to deliver fuel due to pay disputes...
Add to that Gordon Brown scrapping the lowest tax band for the less well off increasing their income tax to about £200 more a year ($380). Cost of food is shooting up and house prices are falling.
Britain was running smoothly until Tony Blair left, and now Gordon has let our economy get out of control with low pay and high cost of living, and then fleecing even more money out of the one group of citizens who can't afford it.
There is no way Labour are going to win the next General Election at this rate.

Another thing that annoys me is that the Govt, both UK and US, both speak about the need of finding alternative fuels and methods of powering a vehicle. Funny that, because they've already invented cars that can run on hydrogen (that give off 0 carbon emissions, just steam), electricity, compressed air... heck, they've even discovered a method for an engine to be powered by nothing but water.
But will the Govt. actually back these... of course not. Why, because basic periodic elements, air and water can't have a 60%+ tax bolted onto the side of it

Nahhhh nah, not at all! I was just saying that in general, that all in America are saying how expensive and unaffordable their fuel is and then there's Britain who's paying more than double that. Our fuel is by far the most expensive in Europe.

Yeah. I suppose we are whining a bit much here. Although, I don't know what the cost of living is like in Europe and what minimum wage is and such. I am not qualified to make such judgements nor do I pretend to either. I do know that what you buy is in liters and that's what a quarter of one of our gallons? Or, something like that. :bigeyes3: Ouch!--that really does hurt!

Minimum wage for me (25) is something like £5.60 an hour, or $10. Cost of living has increased something like 60% in a decade I think but that may have been a panicking headline or something. I know that a loaf of bread that used to cost 60p / $1 is now costing £1.10 $2.

I just got my first car (OMG I'm so excited, it's a really nice car too and I can't seem to shut up about it), and gas is around $4.30 a gallon. I'm glad I get good gas mileage because filling up the gas tank is insane enough without driving a gas guzzler. Why anyone would want to own an SUV or Hummer is beyond me... But I see many of them on the road.

What are you supposed to drive if you have more than 3 kids? I drive a minivan, but a lot of people who have SUVs have 4-6 kids and they need the big cars for the room.

If you have a large family, then a larger car is necessary. Most of the SUVs I see on the road only have one or two people in them with no signs of a carseat. So it's pointless.
People in Portland like to make believe that they're rugged and outdoorsy, you see. They buy cars so they can take their make-believe game further. I say "Bah!" to that; last time I went camping we drove in an old Volvo sedan with excellent gas mileage.

I've got a compact SUV (4 cylinder) and I don't even have any kids - I just really liked the extra height and all-wheel drive. :cool1: I can't take public transportation to my office, so I wanted something a bit more reliable in snowy weather than my old Corolla! :cross2: Sure, the gas mileage isn't as good as the Corolla's was, but for me the difference is worth it.
Tonight in Newark I drove by a gas station offering $3.84/gal. There was a huge line of cars waiting to fill up!

I watched the extras on the DVd for Cars. The director talked about how it saddened them that Americans don't take road trip anymore. They are too busy to just drive and look around. I think being busy is only part of why we don't do that. If we were to go cross country driving like people did back in the day, we'd have to pull out a loan for gas.

Yes, actually it varies from city to city and even station to station. You can see it for $4.41 at one gas station and down the street see it for $4.49(for example).

It's called the free market...or capitalism.
Any station can charge whatever they want to for gas. You the consumer decide who you want to buy from. The various cities, counties and/or states add their own tax to the price.
The lowest taxed state is Alaska at about 24 cents per gallon, with California charging a whopping 64 cents per gallon. Here in Arizona, the combined taxes are (I think) about 37 cents per gallon.
