...hope you have a "Zissen Pesach!" http://www.beatlelinks.net/ubb/smilies/read.gif (that's supposed to be someone reading a Hagaddah at the Seder -- somehow the pharaoh smiley didn't seem appropriate...)
And if you are celebrating Easter this weekend, a very Happy Easter! http://www.beatlelinks.net/ubb/smilies/jesus.gif
(We celebrate both in our house, so it seems a good time to wish all people a very happy holiday, no matter which one they are observing!)

Thanks for the Happy Holidays, Nipper!
I was looking forward to reading more about how Passover was celebrated, but Jami closed the topic, so I'm quoting it here in the hopes that the subject won't be neglected, even though this particular topic was meant to be more of Happy Holidays one...

The worst thing about this is that we can't eat anything with yeast in it. We have to east a dry bread called Mazot (or some might say Maza).

Your wish is my command, Sleepy -- Passover celebrates the Exodus of the Jewish People from Egypt. For the eight days of the holiday, Jews are proscribed from eating anything that is leavened, to commemorate the fact that the people left Egypt so quickly that they did not have time to allow their bread to rise, and so were forced to eat unleavened bread that they baked in the desert. And so, we eat special cracker-like bread called Matzo, and make any variety of baked goods from matzo flour and matzo meal and things like that, or eat foods that do not contain leavening agents like yeast or baking powder.
Depending on whether one's background is Eastern European (Ashkenazi) or Spanish/Portuguese/Middle Eastern (Sephardi), different foods are typical of the holiday. Since my family is of Eastern European background, for example, we don't eat rice or legumes on Passover either, though I have Sephardic friends who do eat those things.
The first two nights of Passover are celebrated with special ritual meals called Seders, which basically follow a form that is set by the reading of a book called the Hagaddah, which recounts the story of the Exodus, and allows us to remember that once we were slaves and now we are free. (And, btw, the Last Supper was a Passover Seder!)
Passover is also a holiday of rebirth, of hope and renewal for another year.
That, in a nutshell, is the basic information about Passover. I hope this answers your questions, and if you have more, please ask!! (That goes for anyone!)

Is this more of a family celebration or does one go to temple? (I ask because I live next door to a temple and parking in my neighborhood is IMPOSSIBLE when they have an event there!) Thanks for all the information; I know I remember learning about all this years ago, but a refresher course is always useful! http://www.beatlelinks.net/ubb/smilies/images/icons/smile.gif

Well...seders are generally held at home, though temples usually have at least one community seder. And more religious Jews than I go to temple on the first two and last two days of the holiday...I'm pretty secular, so I don't usually do that.
Glad the explanation was helpful, Rell!

Thanks for the info, Nipper. A refresher in the background of Passover always comes in handy.
Is there anything you do in particular to observe the Passover season other than dietary? I mean, I see (correct me if I'm wrong) the restricting of the diet during the Passover season as akin to our practice of fast/abstinence during Lent. We Catholics also tend to "give up something" for Lent... while being traditional, several do it as a type of penance and "give up" or abstain from eating desserts, or drinking their favourite beverage, or participating in their favourite pastime. A priest once told us that we would benefit more from this practice if instead of merely abstaining from something we find pleasurable, we would do something charitable that is not in our normal way. He suggested things like daily Mass attendance, visiting nursing homes or volunteering in the soup kitchens, etc.
What things do you do personally to observe Passover? I watch "Jesus of Nazareth", "The Greatest Story Ever Told", and "The Ten Commandments" every year with the girls, so as to root the celebration for them (and for me...)

Thank you, HMVNipper. Happy holidays to you and everyone else here.
Actually, mine wasn't very pleasant. Last night, after we had the Seder, we heard about the suicide bombing, with 21 dead. No need to say how it made us feel...
Sorry, didn't mean to sadden anyone.

Good Friday is the only day of the year you won't find a Mass being celebrated in the Catholic Church (the Roman rite one, at any rate)... Instead, extra Communion wafers are preconsecrated on Holy Thursday during the Feast of the Last Supper to be shared with the communicants on Good Friday.
In keeping with the old Jewish viewpoint of a day beginning at sunset of one evening and ending at sunset of the next evening, many parishes will offer an Easter vigil Mass anytime after 4pm from Saturday on.

Amy, we are just glad you and yours are all right. The situation in Israel right now is awful, and very sad...
I hope the rest of your holiday is better...and I'll be thinking of you!

On Good Friday. A very quiet day. Without music for me, as always... going on with the feeling of reflection and... not sadness. There's always been this confusing kind of thing, like with forbidding things and telling eachother "you shouldn't do this in a day like this" or everything. I think every Catholic person should observe a reflection day, handled in a way that could permit that reflection. To me, is the total abscense of music... as a way of "celebrating" the day. But that's a personal thing. Other people just don't speak, and stay silent. And other people do their normal lives.
The important thing here is how one could manage to feel the spirit of the season in one's hearts.

Lucy-- please be well & safe.
Also, happy
Easter & Passover to all(!)... I remember
when I was a kid, decorating eggs with cute,
smiling faces and designs on them to celebrate Easter--(and I must say, I liked
indulging in the eggs often afterwards).
Also, another cool dish (for Passover) is
trying your hand at "Matzoh Bry"--(if that's
the correct spelling). If you're like me and
love anything "crispy", you might like this
dish-- I'll put the way I cook it up on the "Anybody hungry?/recipe" post area..just wanted to share that around this time.
