Ben and Jerry's, one of the world's most famous ice cream
manufacturers, sends the waste from making ice cream to
local pig farmers to use as feed. Pigs love the stuff, except
for one flavor: Mint Oreo.

The Antpitta avis canis Ridgley is a bird that looks like a
stuffed duck on stilts and barks like a dog! Thirty of these
birds were discovered in the Andes in Ecuador in June 1998.
It apparently had gone undetected because it lives in remote
parts and, of course, doesn't sing. The size of a duck, it is one
of the largest birds discovered in the last 50 years.

The first political poll was taken in 1824 to assess voters'
preferences in the presidential election. Citizens were asked
whom they preferred. The results, published in the Harrisburg
Pennsylvanian on July 24, 1824, gave Andrew Jackson a
commanding lead over John Quincy Adams and all others.
However, Adams won the election. (We STILL haven't gotten
the knack to this day!!)

The X's that people sometimes put at the ends of letters or
notes to mean a kiss, actually started back in the 1000's
when lords would sign their names at the end of documents.
It was originally a cross which they would kiss to signify that
they were loyal to both God and their King. Over time, it became
slanted into the " X" we use today.

The bouillon cube was once a common snack food in early
America. Beef or veal stock was boiled down until it reached
a hard jelly texture. The hard cakes didn't spoil, and trappers
and hunters nibbled on them when tramping along on long
journeys during the 1700s.

There are 2 different formulas for determining what date Easter falls on, since there are (in most years) 2 Easters.
The basic formula is:
The first Sunday after the first full moon after the vernal equinox (March 20, the first day of spring). This year, the holiday falls on March 31. (It can occur any time between March 22 and April 25.)
But there is another formula. In the Eastern Orthodox religion the formula is:
The first Sunday after the first full moon after the vernal equinox after Jewish Passover. And that is why the 2 Easters rarely coincide.

Is there any difference between a mammoth and a mastodon? To most people, all hairy elephants look alike. They can't tell a mammoth from a mastodon. But they were two different animals and the distinction could be important should you ever trip over a large chunk of ice containing one of these extinct mammals. Mastodons go back almost 40 million years and died out a million years ago. They stood ten feet high and had straight tusks. The mammoth, which emerged a mere million years ago, had curved tusks, an extra outer layer of hair, could reach a height of 15 feet and survived until 10,000 years ago.

to be useable as airstrips in times of war or other emergencies.

WHY THE WORLD IS AS IT IS…
The US Standard railroad gauge (distance
between the rails) is 4 feet 8.5 inches. That's
an exceedingly odd number. Why was that
gauge used? Because that's the way they built
them in England, and the US railroads were
built by English expatriates.
Why did the English people build them like
that? Because the first rail lines were built by
the same people who built the pre-railroad
tramways, and that's the gauge they used.
Why did "they" use that gauge then? Because
the people who built the tramways used the
same jigs and tools that they used for building
wagons, which used that wheel spacing.
Why did the wagons use that odd wheel
spacing? Well, if they tried to use any other
spacing the wagons would break on some of
the old, long distance roads, because that's
the spacing of the old wheel ruts.
So who built these old rutted roads? The first
long distance roads in Europe were built by
Imperial Rome for the benefit of their legions.
The roads have been used ever since.
And the ruts? The initial ruts, which everyone
else had to match for fear of destroying their
wagons, were first made by Roman war
chariots. Since the chariots were made for or
by Imperial Rome they were all alike in the
matter of wheel spacing.
Thus, we have the answer to the original
question. The United States' standard railroad
gauge of 4 feet, 8.5 inches derives from the
original specification for an Imperial Roman
army war chariot.
Specs and Bureaucracies live forever.
So, the next time you are handed a
specification and wonder what horse's patoot
came up with it, you may be exactly right.
Because the Imperial Roman chariots were
made to be just wide enough to accommodate
the back ends of two war horses.
Now the twist to the story....There's an
interesting extension of the story about
railroad gauge and horses' behinds. When we
see a Space Shuttle sitting on the launch pad,
there are two big booster rockets attached to
the sides of the main fuel tank. These are the
solid rocket boosters, or SRBs. The SRBs are
made by Thiokol at a factory in Utah. The
engineers who designed the SRBs might have
preferred to make them a bit fatter, but the
SRBs had to be shipped by train from the
factory to the launch site. The railroad line to
the factory runs through a tunnel in the
mountains. The SRBs had to fit through that
tunnel. The tunnel is slightly wider than a
railroad track, and the railroad track is about
as wide as two horses' behinds. So a major
design feature of what is arguably the world's
most advanced transportation system was
determined by the width of a horse's rear end!

IF YOU DOUBT THE IMPORTANCE OF BEER IN
HISTORY
It was the accepted practice in Babylonia 4,000
years ago that for a month after the wedding, the
bride's father would supply his son-in-law with all
the mead he could drink. Mead is a honey beer, and
because their calendar was lunar based, this period
was called the "honey month" or what we know
today as the "honeymoon."
Before thermometers were invented, brewers would
dip a thumb or finger into the mix to find the right
temperature for adding yeast. Too cold, and the
yeast wouldn't grow. Too hot, and the yeast would
die. This thumb in the beer is where we get the
phrase "rule of thumb."
In English pubs, ale is ordered by pints and quarts.
So in old England, when customers got unruly, the
bartender would yell at them to mind their own
pints and quarts and settle down. It's where we get
the phrase "mind your P's and Q's."
Beer was the reason the Pilgrims landed at
Plymouth Rock. It's clear from the Mayflower's log
that the crew didn't want to waste beer looking for a
better site. The log goes on to state that the
passengers "were hasted ashore and made to drink
water that the seamen might have the more beer."
After consuming a bucket or two of vibrant brew
they called aul, or ale, the Vikings would head
fearlessly into battle often without armour or even
shirts. In fact, the term "berserk" means "bare shirt"
in Norse, and eventually took on the meaning of
their wild battles.
In 1740 Admiral Vernon of the British fleet decided
to water down the navy's rum. Needless to say, the
sailors weren't too pleased and called Admiral
Vernon "Old Grog," after the stiff wool grogram
coats he wore. The term "grog" soon began to mean
the watered down drink itself. When you were
drunk on this grog, you were "groggy."
Many years ago in England, pub frequenters had a
whistle baked into the rim or handle of their
ceramic cups. When they needed a refill, they used
the whistle to get some service. "Wet your whistle" is
the phrase inspired by this practice.
So now you can appreciate the importance of BEER
throughout history.

The Spanish word for cat door is gatera. In old Spanish
homes, there was a gatera cut into the doors to give the
kitties an easy way in and out of the house. It also provided
a way for romance among the young to take place, when
balconies were too high. The couple would lay on the floor,
he on the outside, she on the inside and carry on conversa-

Something for the Star Trek fans: ever wonder how they do that neat transporter effect?
The transporter effect is accomplished as follows:
1) Fill a canister with water. Add glitter and shine a light through it. Stir briskly and tape.
2) Film the scene, first with the actor, then without. (Or vice versa)
3) Transfer the scene to tape, and use video technology to matte the glitter over the actor.
4) Use a video wipe to 'streak down' the glitter

Whoever said that political polls were definitive indicators of the eventual outcome of an election? Although modern, scientific polling methods may claim to sample as representative a cross-section of the electorate as possible, they are still nothing more than that: a sample. Certainly we couldn't expect the "primitive" poll of 1824 to have guaranteed who the next president would be, any more than we could expect polls to be 100% reliable today. But just as importantly, most political polls are conducted by pollsters with a political agenda, and polling questions are biased to give them the outcome they want to report to the media -- this could have only been even more true in the much more highly partisan years of the first half of the 19th Century, and I can almost guarantee you that the Harrisburg Pennsylvanian was a heavily pro-Jackson paper.
But you say that we didn't have the knack for accurate polling in 1824 because John Quincy Adams won the election. Well, there's more to the story, because did you know that in 1824, Andrew Jackson actually did win more popular votes than Adams? The problem was that no candidate had a majority of the electoral count. The decision was left to the House, where Adams was made president.

Come on, you can go further back than that. Julius Caesar had early forms of lottery in ancient Rome, and the Hun Dynasty used a lottery to help finance the Great Wall. Even Moses used a lottery to distribute land west of the Jordan River in Israel.
As for U.S. history, I thought you might find it interesting that Thomas Jefferson died with debts of more than $100,000, and the Virginia legislature established a lottery on his behalf to resolve his money problems. It failed. Not enough scratchers, I guess.

Smileys are tiny pictures made from ordinary ASCII characters that are meant to be looked at with the head tilted to the left.
Smileys came about when e-mail correspondents felt the need to convey emotional content such as sarcasm, laughter and other feelings as part of their messages.
Without smileys, simple statements could easily be misinterpreted:
You're an idiot! :-)
Sometime during 1981, Scott Fahlman, who is now a Principle Research Scientist in the School of Computer Science at Carnegie Mellon University, devised a scheme for encoding and conveying one's feelings as small text "glyphs" to overcome this frustration.
Scott was the first to use smileys in electronic mail and in posts to BBS message boards and Internet newsgroups, as well as in personal e-mail.

There's no such animal as "accurate polling" - it's a sampling, and there are no guarantees, no matter how wide you spread your net, you will get even a decent representation of opinions. Not only haven't we "got the knack", we will never get it.

Where are you guys getting all of your "trivia" from?

Inside London’s oldest church, St. Bartholomew-the-Great, is a wall tablet recording the death of a man named Edward Cooke. His 1652 epitaph requests that others cry for him, "or if ye find noe vent for tears, yet stay and see the marble weep." As poetic as this sounds, it seems to also be ironic, as Cooke's memorial is made of "weeping marble," a material that tends to exude beads or "tears" of moisture.

Half of all American homes still had outhouses in 1940. By 1960 that was down to about 17 percent. In 1990, a little over one million homes in the U. S, or 1. 2 percent still had them. Now that number has been almost cut in half.

Why do we say that something that's been censored has been bowdlerized?
For many years, this word was traced back to Thomas Bowdler, the publisher of The Family Shakespeare in 1818. Bowdler laundered the Bard, it was said, cleaning up anything that might offend "nice" people. They certainly didn’t want youngsters acquiring bad habits from lines such as, "Get thee to a nunnery."
But recent scholarship indicates that Thomas’ sister, Harriet, should be credited as the eponymous Bowdler. The first edition, published in 1807, mentions no editor, but was known by people familiar with her to be her work. Why was her brother’s name on the second edition? Because she was a spinster, who wasn’t supposed to be familiar with that which she censored.

Here's a safety tip for all:
What is Lightning?
The action of rising and descending air within a thunderstorm separates positive and negative charges. Water and ice particles also affect the distribution of electrical charge. Lightning results from the buildup and discharge of electrical energy between positively and negatively charged areas.
Lightning Myths and Facts
MYTH: If it is not raining, then there is no danger from lightning.
FACT: Lightning often strikes outside of heavy rain and may occur as far as 10 miles away from any rainfall.
MYTH: The rubber soles of shoes or rubber tires on a car will protect you from being struck by lightning.
FACT: Rubber-soled shoes and rubber tires provide NO protection from lightning. However, the steel frame of a hard-topped vehicle provides increased protection if you are not touching metal. Although you may be injured if lightning strikes your car, you are much safer inside a vehicle than outside.
MYTH: People struck by lightning carry an electrical charge and should not be touched.
FACT: Lightning-strike victims carry no electrical charge and should be attended to immediately. Contact your local American Red Cross chapter for information on CPR and first aid classes.
MYTH: "Heat lightning" occurs after very hot summer days and poses no threat.
FACT: What is referred to as "heat lightning" is actually lightning from a thunderstorm too far away for thunder to be heard. However, the storm may be moving in your direction!
Lightning Safety
If lightning is occurring and a sturdy shelter is not available, get inside a hard top automobile and keep windows up.
Get out of boats and away from water.
Avoid using the telephone or any electrical appliances. Use phones ONLY in an emergency.
Do not take a bath or shower.
Turn off air conditioners. Power surges from lightning can overload the compressors.
If Caught Outdoors and No Shelter Is Nearby:
Find a low spot away from trees, fences, and poles. Make sure the place you pick is not subject to flooding.
If you are in the woods, take shelter under the shorter trees.
If you feel your skin tingle or your hair stand on end, squat low to the ground on the balls of your feet. Place your hands on your knees with your head between them. Make yourself the smallest target possible, and minimize your contact with the ground.
If you are boating or swimming, get to land and find shelter immediately!

Ten Myths of Divorce
1. Myth: Because people learn from their bad experiences, second marriages tend to be more successful than first marriages.
Fact: Although many people who divorce have successful subsequent marriages, the divorce rate of remarriages is in fact higher than that of first marriages.
2. Myth: Living together before marriage is a good way to reduce the chances of eventually divorcing.
Fact: Many studies have found that those who live together before marriage have a considerably higher chance of eventually divorcing. The reasons for this are not well understood. In part, the type of people who are willing to cohabit may also be those who are more willing to divorce. There is some evidence that the act of cohabitation itself generates attitudes in people that are more conducive to divorce, for example the attitude that relationships are temporary and easily can be ended.
3. Myth: Divorce may cause problems for many of the children who are affected by it, but by and large these problems are not long lasting and the children recover relatively quickly.
Fact: Divorce increases the risk of interpersonal problems in children. There is evidence, both from small qualitative studies and from large-scale, long-term empirical studies, that many of these problems are long lasting. In fact, they may even become worse in adulthood.
4. Myth: Having a child together will help a couple to improve their marital satisfaction and prevent a divorce.
Fact: Many studies have shown that the most stressful time in a marriage is after the first child is born. Couples who have a child together have a slightly decreased risk of divorce compared to couples without children, but the decreased risk is far less than it used to be when parents with marital problems were more likely to stay together "for the sake of the children."
5. Myth: Following divorce, the woman's standard of living plummets by 73 percent while that of the man's improves by 42 percent.
Fact: This dramatic inequity, one of the most widely publicized statistics from the social sciences, was later found to be based on a faulty calculation. A reanalysis of the data determined that the woman's loss was 27 percent while the man's gain was 10 percent. Irrespective of the magnitude of the differences, the gender gap is real and seems not to have narrowed much in recent decades.
6. Myth: When parents don't get along, children are better off if their parents divorce than if they stay together.
Fact: A recent large-scale, long-term study suggests otherwise. While it found that parents' marital unhappiness and discord have a broad negative impact on virtually every dimension of their children's well-being, so does the fact of going through a divorce. In examining the negative impacts on children more closely, the study discovered that it was only the children in very high-conflict homes who benefited from the conflict removal that divorce may bring. In lower-conflict marriages that end in divorce — and the study found that perhaps as many as two thirds of the divorces were of this type — the situation of the children was made much worse following a divorce. Based on the findings of this study, therefore, except in the minority of high-conflict marriages it is better for the children if their parents stay together and work out their problems than if they divorce.
7. Myth: Because they are more cautious in entering marital relationships and also have a strong determination to avoid the possibility of divorce, children who grow up in a home broken by divorce tend to have as much success in their own marriages as those from intact homes.
Fact: Marriages of the children of divorce actually have a much higher rate of divorce than the marriages of children from intact families. A major reason for this, according to a recent study, is that children learn about marital commitment or permanence by observing their parents. In the children of divorce, the sense of commitment to a lifelong marriage has been undermined.
8. Myth: Following divorce, the children involved are better off in stepfamilies than in single-parent families.
Fact: The evidence suggests that stepfamilies are no improvement over single-parent families, even though typically income levels are higher and there is a father figure in the home. Stepfamilies tend to have their own set of problems, including interpersonal conflicts with new parent figures and a very high risk of family breakup.
9. Myth: Being very unhappy at certain points in a marriage is a good sign that the marriage will eventually end in divorce.
Fact: All marriages have their ups and downs. Recent research using a large national sample found that 86 percent of people who were unhappily married in the late 1980s, and stayed with the marriage, indicated when interviewed five years later that they were happier. Indeed, three fifths of the formerly unhappily married couples rated their marriages as either "very happy" or "quite happy."
10. Myth: It is usually men who initiate divorce proceedings.
Fact: Two-thirds of all divorces are initiated by women. One recent study found that many of the reasons for this have to do with the nature of our divorce laws. For example, in most states women have a good chance of receiving custody of their children. Because women more strongly want to keep their children with them, in states where there is a presumption of shared custody with the husband the percentage of women who initiate divorces is much lower. Also, the higher rate of women initiators is probably due to the fact that men are more likely to be "badly behaved." Husbands, for example, are more likely than wives to have problems with drinking, drug abuse, and infidelity.

In the 1986 Spanish Grand Prix, Ayrton Senna beat Nigel Mansell by 0.014 seconds. The finishing line had been moved back, a few inches, closer to the final corner, had it stayed in it's original position, Mansell - who went passed Senna after the chequered flag - would have won!

In 1935 a method for lining tin cans with vinyl plastic was developed for use with canned beers.
The most popular beverage in the world is tea, and beer is number two. However, in England and Ireland, beer is the most popular beverage.
The ancient Babylonians were making more than a dozen different varieties of beer from various grains and honey in 4000 B.C.
The Egyptians believed that the god of agriculture, Osiris, taught humans how to make beer.
Historians report that during the Middle Ages, when monks were brewing their beer in their monasteries, each monk was allowed to drink 5 quarts of beer a day.
In 1900 there were over 1,800 breweries in the U.S. In 1980 there were 44, and in 2001 there were close to 2,000. The ups and downs of brewing beer!

Generations ago, it was considered lady-like for a new bride to be (or, to appear to be) hesitant to "give herself" to her new husband, whether or not she truly was. At their bridal chamber threshold, the husband would often have to carry the bride over to encourage her to go in. The tradition still is observed.

What's the oldest city in the America's?
A place called Caral, in Peru. The site is just now being excavated but already it’s been dated almost back to 3,000 BC. That would have made it a thriving urban area during the great era of pyramid building in Egypt.
Caral covered about 35 square miles, had its own pyramids, one of which spanned the area of four football fields, a large amphitheater, plazas and homes. It may have been the birthplace of the Inca civilization.

Did you know Jell-O is over 100 Years old and Still the Coolest?
Over one hundred years ago, Jell-O was little more than a
brand name and an unfulfilled dream. Today, if placed end
to end, the 413,997,403 packages of Jell-O gelatin dessert
produced in a year would stretch three-fifths of the way
around the globe with plenty of room to spare.
More than 1,134,239 packages of Jell-O gelatin are purchased
or eaten every day. Today, the Jell-O brand is found on over
120 products encompassing everything from puddings, ready-to-
eat snacks, no bake desserts and yogurt.
Jell-O is a brand recognized by 99% of Americans and used
regularly in 72% of our homes.
In 1845, that inveterate industrialist, inventor and
philanthropist Peter Cooper, of Tom Thumb engine and Cooper
Union fame, obtained the first patent for a gelatin dessert.
And get this...during the early quarter of the 20th century,
immigrants entering Ellis Island, New York, were served
Jell-O gelatin as a "Welcome to America."

The first reference to angels in the Bible is in Genesis 16 with reference to Abraham and Sarah. The Bible tells us that there are good angels and bad angels too. Angels are often seen as the Messengers of God, but they have other roles too, including Guardians. Angels as we imagine them now (as seen in illustrations and on Christmas cards) are not really like that at all. Angels can appear in the image of man, but they come from a different stream of consciousness.

This fruit of ancient lineage has been grown in China for over
4,000 years. It now thrives in most temperate climates, with
California producing about 90 percent of the American crop.
A relative of the peach, the apricot is smaller and has a smooth,
oval pit that falls out easily when the fruit is halved. Because
they're highly perishable and seasonal, 90 percent of the fresh
apricots are marketed in June and July. When buying apricots,
select plump, reasonably firm fruit with a uniform color. Store in
a plastic bag in the refrigerator for up to 3 to 5 days. Like bitter
almonds, apricot kernels are poisonous until roasted.
